Harry and Megan have just announced their new baby's name.

What's everyone's thoughts?
@CokeDrinker

I imagine it’ll just be a coincidence then, that it’s the Queen’s private family nickname too.
@Armi I'm not doubting it is a nod to the Queen, just saying that it is not the 'made up name' everyone is saying it is.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 06/06/2021 19:22

I think it’s awful.

I thought Harry wanted to move away from the royal family and start a new life in the US?

Why would they pick names so intertwined with the royal family?

Wanttocry · 06/06/2021 19:23

@Roussette

He used to call her 'cabbage' not Lilibet.

I think Lilibet was from childhood or something

I think it is what Prince Phillip called her, it just didn’t come from him, it was a family nickname from childhood.
Andylion · 06/06/2021 19:23

It IS a real actual name, I know two Lillibets (double l, mind), one in their 50s, the other 62 - neither live in the UK and neither are named after the Queen (yep I asked). Just because you haven't heard of it outside the Queen doesn't mean it isn't a "real name".

I think that is the third time you have posted that. Did you just cut and paste? The fact that it is an actual name is irrelevant in this context.

devastating · 06/06/2021 19:23

I like Lili but not alongside Archie as it sounds too the same ending wise. Not that I can talk as two of my dc have the same sounding letter at the beginning of their names, and two of theirs names end in A.

Lovely news, and a lovely new baby for them. Why say anything negative when you just don't have to?

I wondered about this as well.

just saying that it is not the 'made up name' everyone is saying it is

‘Everyone’ is not saying that. Literally a handful of posters have said that.

ThursdayWeld · 06/06/2021 19:24

I know that this is going to astonish some people, but all names are made-up.

Marmaladeagain · 06/06/2021 19:24

H&M clearly state on their published announcement that their intention and reason for the chosen name is because if is a family nickname of the Queen - the family they've been publicly trashing.

Peculiar.

H&M announcement on Twitter doesn't say they chose the name because it's a popular name in US or because M has a relative called Lillie (let's face it if that Lillie was alive then M wouldn't be talking to her anyhow...).

Peculiar.

Loveatortie · 06/06/2021 19:24

Best i don't give my opinion, i would only get deleted and a stern e-mail from hq Grin

smilesy · 06/06/2021 19:25

Prince Philip did call the Queen Lilibet as well as cabbage. From the BBC report:

“The Queen's late husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, also called her by the nickname, and wrote to his mother-in-law after their wedding: "Lilibet is the only 'thing' in the world which is absolutely real to me."

CokeDrinker · 06/06/2021 19:25

@Andylion I am replying to posters who claim it is a made up name, and there have been a few who have made that claim. Is that okay with you?
NanaNorasNaughtyKnickers · 06/06/2021 19:25

That's ridiculous as a registered name! It's like christening your child Sweetiekins.

Armi · 06/06/2021 19:25

It’s not a nod to the Queen. It’s an announcement that they are best mates, which I find highly unlikely, (but life is always full of surprises.)

If I were cynical, I might suggest that the implied continued intimacy with HMQ would go down well with those that H&M wish to make lots of money from. However, I’m sure no-one would be that cynical about the naming of their child. Surely.

Andylion · 06/06/2021 19:26

@Roussette

He could have called her both Cabbage and Lilibet. Anyone who watched PP's funeral knows the Queen signed the card with the flowers on his coffin with Lilibet.
Bhooks · 06/06/2021 19:26

@Words

Golly, I hope they asked permission - otherwise a very bold move, I would say.

' Lili ' is an idiosyncratic spelling, and in that usage, is often hyphenated : Lili-Mae, Lili- Jo, Lili- Marie etc. Clearly that would be an unfortunate option here, given the middle name.

It goes perfectly with Archie Harrison.

Lili is the Welsh spelling. It's not an idiosyncratic spelling at all.
mathanxiety · 06/06/2021 19:27

(let's face it if that Lillie was alive then M wouldn't be talking to her anyhow...).

The relative in question was on her mother's side, so you are probably wrong.

Beardie03 · 06/06/2021 19:27

Beautiful name

Jayzus

mathanxiety · 06/06/2021 19:28

Lili is a frequently used spelling in the US, where hyphenated names are not used much, and not disparaged if they are.

SmokeyDevil · 06/06/2021 19:28

Trying too hard. If she's going to be called lily, just name her lily then. It's a name of its own. I get the Diana bit, but lilibet is really trying too hard. Maybe they are close to changing their minds again and want to be royals? Hard to know with these two.

Livelovebehappy · 06/06/2021 19:28

Insensitive. Probably caused the Queen extra stress with their OW interview, when her husband was very ill. I’m happy for them - let’s just hope there’s less media focus on them from the UK press now, and they take a (very long) break from doing any further ‘trash the RF’ interviews. They need to focus on the future, and not continually refer to the past.

SueSaid · 06/06/2021 19:28

'If I were cynical, I might suggest that the implied continued intimacy with HMQ would go down well with those that H&M wish to make lots of money from'

Hmm. I bet Oprah et al approve.
