Lots of projection on here, along with the sensible pragmatists.

The Queen rarely, if ever, shows emotion in public. Even if one of her children had sat right next to her in the chapel, there would have been no obvious physical contact. That's not how they roll.

My dh is made of similar stock. When he has given moving eulogies at close family funerals, and returned to his seat next to me, I know that he doesn't want a hug or a hand touch or anything. I've fleetingly wondered if the congregation behind us think I'm a cold bitch for not seeming to comfort him visibly, but it's not how he rolls either. Doesn't mean he's not in deep emotional turmoil.

There was a thread on mn recently about hugs, and how some people, including me, aren’t big on hugs. Our whole family don’t hug. We’re more ‘stiff upper lip’, then touchy, freely.

@Bowbridge Flowers

Can I ask what might be an insensitive question (sorry if it is). Why do they have lead lined coffins? I read Diana did too.

Was that a different thread from the one that was cheering about Covid putting paid to having to hug strangers? (Every cloud, eh?)
Standrewsschool · 18/04/2021 20:06

Apparently they are lead-lined because it preserves the body longer.

I believe it preserves the body for longer, although I'm not sure why that needs to be the case.
Standrewsschool · 18/04/2021 20:08

@CallmeHendricks. I think it was, but I may be wrong.

Sparklingbrook · 18/04/2021 20:08

Is it right that PP is only in the vault until the Queen dies then they are both going elsewhere? Frogmore?

timeforanewnameagain · 18/04/2021 20:08

Oh thank you for answering. I'm not sure why they need to do that but I guess there just be a reason!

No, not to Frogmore. Still in St George's but in the same part as The Queen's parents.

Is that because they are stored "above ground" until their companion passes?
coodawoodashooda · 18/04/2021 20:22

I thought the heavy lining was to stop it from being stolen.

SophieB100 · 18/04/2021 20:23

Lead lined because it preserves the body.
PP will be moved to another crypt in Windsor chapel alongside the Queen when she is laid to rest - her parents are there, and I think I read that Margaret's ashes are there - although I might have got that wrong.

Sparklingbrook · 18/04/2021 20:34

Princess Margaret died 6 weeks before the Queen Mother, she wanted to be buried with her Mother and Father but there would only be room for the ashes so she was cremated.

willowisps · 18/04/2021 20:40

I was thinking yesterday how frail the Queen looked. People do die of broken hearts I believe because my grandma died at my grandpa's funeral, she had said many times that she didn't want to live without him. A PP said they had a similar thing so Flowers for them and had the identical funeral and we did too, the same hymns, poem, everything. They were buried together in the churchyard.

What a conversation to have! I’d have been tempted to say “first one in stays whole, last in cremated.” Wink

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 18/04/2021 20:50

I agree 100%.

That sound like one of our family conversations. DH soo realised he’d married into a family of ghouls (after a lost dinner family ‘who has the worst funeral story’ competition and my grandma won and came second).
JanFebAnyMonth · 18/04/2021 21:35

Fascinating article with details of the vault, who’s in there, how the lift mechanism works, etc:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9482763/Prince-Philip-joins-24-Royals-vault-St-Georges-Chapel.html

Aren’t royal coffins lead lines because originally there would have been worries about grave robbers or something?

dementor72 · 18/04/2021 21:39

I feel for Her Majesty , she looked broken and truly her age , which she has never done before .
I am fearing that she will be next and pretty soon .
Losing your soulmate of so long , it wouldn’t surprise me.
My parents died within 2 months of each other ; I like to think they wanted to be together eternally.

reprehensibleme · 18/04/2021 21:40

Willowisps Sad I can well believe it.

SunshineCake · 18/04/2021 21:42

I'd be very worried that if the Queen went soon Prince Charles wouldn't be far behind SadShock.

Peregrina · 18/04/2021 21:46

Why should that be a worry? William is an adult. It would be good for him to inherit the throne in his early forties instead of waiting until he's at least seventy two plus.

FreekStar · 18/04/2021 21:49

What do people mean by 'I'm fearing the queen will be next"? She's in her 90's, I hope she will be next! Who else should it be?
