My husband lost his sister . His mother died three months later. His father died five months after her. They had been married nearly 70 years.

Wbeezer · 18/04/2021 23:31

Re lead lined coffins, isn't it to prevent "fluids" rotting the coffins, needed if you're in a crypt or mausoleum...

MrsPworkingmummy · 18/04/2021 23:43

A meticulously organised, personal and generally wonderful funeral service

JFM27 · 18/04/2021 23:54

I think the queen will be arround for quite a bit longer..Why do people always imagine that when one elderly person dies their spouse will follow,My dad adored my mum but he lived another 12 years till 98 and he was 5 years older than her,They had been married 57 years..If you live that long you are very resilant.

ElizabethTudor · 18/04/2021 23:57

I’ve just watched the documentary on Princess Anne someone mentioned on one of the royal threads over the past few days. It’s on the ITV hub, called Anne: Tye Princess Royal at 70. Well worth a watch if you haven’t seen it. She comes across really well.

I agree @ElizabethTudor. She's thoroughly sensible and no-nonsense and has put in decades of hard work getting to know her charities to the nth degree.
She and her then-husband made the sensible decision to refuse titles for their children, despite them being grandchildren of the reigning monarch and throughout, Peter and Zara have confirmed how beneficial that was to them in enabling them to live more ordinary lives.

I agree.

Obviously I know nothing about her overall health, but she seems like someone who lives a healthy life.

She is a strong woman.

Quite probably there would be considerably less people thinking the Queen will follow him quickly if she was 86. At 86 she was still doing ful time royal engagements and the likes. But she’s not, she’s 95 And she’s aged noticeably recently.
SunshineCake · 19/04/2021 06:35

@Peregrina

Why should that be a worry? William is an adult. It would be good for him to inherit the throne in his early forties instead of waiting until he's at least seventy two plus.
Charles dying isn't just the effect it would have on the Monarchy!
genius1308 · 19/04/2021 06:53

They're lead lined to preserve the body. Lead lined prevents any moisture getting in and slows the process . I thought the service was perfect, so beautiful in the current circumstances, but I did feel for the pall bearers (especially during the minutes silence). The coffin must be so heavy. Apparently princess Diana's weighed quarter of a ton. It's said that the Queen and Prince Phillip have exactly the same solid English oak, lead lined coffin, which were both made decades ago.

SylvieHortensis · 19/04/2021 06:54

I feel for Her Majesty , she looked broken and truly her age , which she has never done before

Broken? Honestly, the sentimentality on parts of this thread is cringe inducing. She walked unaided into the church and sat there composed before making her way out again. HM doesn't look particularly joyous at weddings - Church is a serious matter for the Queen.

HoppingPavlova · 19/04/2021 06:57

What do people mean by 'I'm fearing the queen will be next"? She's in her 90's, I hope she will be next! Who else should it be?

To voice what I guess most are thinking. Charles. Most people would probably be happier if he went before the Queen and the throne passed directly to William.

Bowbridge · 19/04/2021 07:04

The Queen must be one of the healthiest 95 year olds in the UK. I can't ever remember her ever being in hospital. Philip was often in for a urine infections, heart problems, hip replacement etc. In 2017, he stepped back from all royal duties... he was 95. The Queen is still working full time with daily briefings etc. She is amazing and I am sure her work will be a comfort and distraction.

Roussette · 19/04/2021 07:10

Why do people always imagine that when one elderly person dies their spouse will follow

Because there's quite a few posters on this thread who have lost parents close together, or know relatives the same. Mine died within 10 days of each other after more than 60 years married.

And a devoted elderly couple I knew years ago who lived opposite us.... she had a massive stroke and went into hospital by ambulance and was not going to recover. He went into hospital, lay on the bed next to her holding her, had a fatal heart attack and died. So her son told me anyway.

It is recognised you can die of a broken heart

I think it's crass to hope that Charles went before the Queen so he doesn't become monarch Shock

ivykaty44 · 19/04/2021 07:11

The photograph with PP placed in ghost form is rather creepy imo

I only watched the start to see Land Rover but it struck me how old Prince Charles was looking, I noticed Princess Anne looking over at him a couple of times, as if she had concerns for him - sad times

We will have though a pensioner for a King one day an old man

Agreed. Under the radar but does a HUGE amount of work for charities and good causes.
ivykaty44 · 19/04/2021 07:18

@ElizabethTudor I enjoyed the program, there was an interesting part of Clare Baldins auto biography where PA didn’t come across as just matter of fact that makes me wonder...

I do remover at an agricultural show being asked to leave a particular tent as PA wanted to look around & obviously didn’t want me there 🤣 or anyone else I guess for security

cptartapp · 19/04/2021 07:19

My GP were married 66 years. When my GF died my GM was distraught but determined to live. She was still flying abroad alone on holiday at 86 and didn't due until several years later.

Alsohuman · 19/04/2021 07:20

@Sparklingbrook

Princess Margaret died 6 weeks before the Queen Mother, she wanted to be buried with her Mother and Father but there would only be room for the ashes so she was cremated.
Don’t think that’s quite right. There is room because that’s where the Queen and DofE are going. Apparently Princess Margaret had a horror of rotting away and chose to burn instead. I don’t blame her.
Sparklingbrook · 19/04/2021 07:23

Sorry if I got that wrong. I looked it up @Alsohuman. Something to do with there not being room in between her parents or something not room in general?

Alsohuman · 19/04/2021 07:47

Thanks for the link @Sparklingbrook. That’s made me so sad, the thought of that once beautiful and glamorous woman ending up in Slough Crem is a bit heartbreaking.

It just seems illogical that there’s room for two more coffins and a third couldn’t have been squeezed in. I wonder where monarchs after the Queen will be interred.

I know. Slough crematorium ☹️ It does make you wonder what happens when it’s all full up. I assume everyone is allotted a specific space and PM wanted to be with her parents but their bit didn’t have the space.

That sounds very likely - (not something I'd considered before, I admit).

Are bodies in these circumstances embalmed? Would they still "leak"?
