Did any of you wear black and pearls to watch the funeral at home?

GlencoraP · 17/04/2021 20:36

@DobbyTheHouseElk

I don’t want to be crass. But where did the coffin go? I didn’t see it leave the chapel. Next frame it had gone.

Some PP saying it was lowered, I don’t see that. Did it get lowered in the chapel? Can’t work it out and apologies if it’s a crass question.

There is a hydraulic lift mechanism which lowers it straight down into the vault . I was surprised that the hole was still there but presumably the stone that usually covers the chamber was too heavy to replace . I thought it was so sensitive and appropriate that the lowering happened privately while the television coverage focused on the buglers.

I noticed as they filed out that a number including the Queen and Princess Beatrice looked vs whilst fully at the hole . Apparently though people can access the vault and sit with the coffins . ( obviously family not the public)

HeronLanyon · 17/04/2021 20:36

freek given some of us are not monarchists but found it dredged up personal grief that’s a bit tossy.
Also very funny Grin

CoolShoeshine · 17/04/2021 20:37

I’m not criticising because I found so much of the event extraordinary touching but the service itself seemed a bit lacking in detail and mainly focused on the choir singing - were there parts of the service which were private with the audience just seeing the choir at those points? It seemed so wonderful in the build up to the service but the service seemed much less personal. Unless they made it a bit impersonal so that it wouldn’t be too difficult for the family?

SteveArnottsCodeine · 17/04/2021 20:37

I’m no royalist, in fact I’m a bit of a Republican really, but even I shed a tear when they played I Vow to Thee, My Country. In fact, for about two and a half minutes I was a raving nationalist. It’s passed now though. Very moving funeral all ways around though, the carriage and gloves in particular were incredibly poignant.

Haberdasheryhen · 17/04/2021 20:37

I felt for Harry and Wills walking behind the coffin, as it must have brought back very sad memories for them. The Queen did look very alone but apparently her Lady in Waiting was in the Chapel but some distance away.

SheldonesqueHasGotTheWeevils · 17/04/2021 20:37

It was as far from being cold and impersonal as it could possibly be.

It was beautifully done. It said all it needed to say.

The mark of the man was all through it.

Dignified.

Why even type that? What does it achieve? Do you get off on making snide comments?
rainbowthoughts · 17/04/2021 20:39

I suspect Heathrow just switched to one of the runways that sends planes out in a different direction.

No, they didn't. They couldn't actually be sue they were operating on 09's so only the southern runway is used for departures. They kept the inbounds away from Windsor for a few minutes around the silence, although something did land just seconds before it. There was noise of high level aircraft also.

rainbowthoughts · 17/04/2021 20:39

Couldn't because Blush

Well aren't you a delight. FreekStar?
dottiedaisee · 17/04/2021 20:41

Today has been so poignant for me . I was staying at Windsor Castle with a friend who lives there and is a senior member of the househoId I had a fantastic weekend there but I wasn’t aware that my darling Mum had died suddenly on the Monday...it was a bank holiday and I had spoken to her on the Friday on my way to the castle. Have shed so many tears today..she really was a lovely lady and Windsor always holds bittersweet memories for me .

HeronLanyon · 17/04/2021 20:41

steve me too. I’m afraid mine lasted a bit longer but I’m ok now. Whew. It’s how they keep us in our place ! Stay alert. Grin

SpringtimeSummertime · 17/04/2021 20:42

Steve I’m not a royalist either but I appreciate that historically the Royal family has been significant in our country for many many years. For better & for worse.

SheldonesqueHasGotTheWeevils · 17/04/2021 20:42

I don’t own pearls sadly.

I just wore my medals.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 17/04/2021 20:42

@dottiedaisee

I think Huw Edwards was absolutely brilliant,a true professional. I missed the service but I think the coverage of the military was amazing . The music absolutely heart stopping
He mucked up the reading though - it was Ecclesiasticus (Sirach) not Ecclesiastes.

(There was a disturbance in the Force as though a million theologians cried out in horror, and were silenced . . . )

I thought he would correct himself, but he didn't.

I wasn't asking to be funny- I was just asking because a friend of mine asked what I was doing today and I said I was having a drink outside a bar and she said she was at home wearing black and pearls for the funeral? I thought this was strange and it never occurred to me that ordinary people might do this- so was just asking to see if this was common?

HeronLanyon · 17/04/2021 20:45

I thought princess anne looked great. She also looked like a suffragette - particularly the hat coat length and medals. Really good to see a woman there and be-médalled.

coodawoodashooda · 17/04/2021 20:46

Does anyone know the name of the lone piper? I think I recognise him.

GlencoraP · 17/04/2021 20:46

Very shallow but I thought Kate’s pearls were beautiful. She looked every inch the future Queen . Why did all the women wear such vertiginous heels though, what is wrong with a nice pair of mid heel courts

the80sweregreat · 17/04/2021 20:47

I could never be a Royal as I cannot wear heels.
Kudos to those that can.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 17/04/2021 20:47

I understand the Prince Phillip commissioned the service himself down to the last detail, including all readings, music etc, so it was very personal to the family.

LizzieSiddal · 17/04/2021 20:48

The lone Piper was an exquisite moment.

Yes so beautiful. Him walking slowing towards that little door, it had me blubbing.

I know what you mean. I didn't dress up today, but I at least wasn't my usual scruff for the wedding of Fergie and Andrew. (Not that I was there you understand Grin)
