Abolishing the Royal Family

Anyone else in favour of it?

I’m not entirely sure what their purpose is either.

*I’ve not been sold on any benefit of the royal family yet.

Is Andrew still 8th in line to the throne?

I know it’s very unlikely he will ever get anywhere near it but in theory he could, and there would be little anyone could do to change it.*
Well won't he move further down again when H & M baby is born , he has no chance of ever being king as will just move further down as time goes on

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 11/03/2021 16:54

@Brahumbug how can they with andrew its something that happened elsewhere the allegations of bullying were to royal employees , and from what I have read they are looking into their policies and how things were handled at the time

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 11/03/2021 16:58

Modernise it and slim down isn't that Charles plan
But then people don't like some of the slim down plans already

PersimmonTree · 11/03/2021 16:59

Still no valid arguments produced by anyone, at all, to justify the 69.2 MILLION POUNDS a year we pay for this circus.

They don't bring in tourists, who come anyway and also visit other countries, which are already Republics.

They have a verified paedo in their midst, highly questionable morals and ethics and blatant self-interest yet at the same time sovereign immunity to do whatever they like, "are committed" to full financial disclosure but in reality do whatever they want with our money, are being investigated by the Guardian for closed-door influencing of govt powers, they own half of Cornwall purely thanks to a 700-year old decision by a medieval king, divert valuable police resources when kids in London are getting stabbed on a daily basis.... How many more reasons do we need, to end this ridiculous set-up?

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 11/03/2021 17:04

Do people really think its that easy to just abolish and it all goes tomorrow
And yes a mot if tourists do come to see the queen , we know they don't get to see them etc , why would you having trooping of the colour and changing of the guards with no queen.

Empty palaces would soon be uninteresting people go to paris for eiffel tower etc not so much for empty palaces.
Also re: money brought in it depends what you believe and say they cost 60 million but bring in 50 million , if you abolish and then only get 40 million in tourism you are still down .
Its a lot more complex issue

StellaDendrite · 11/03/2021 17:04

They should be abolished. Maybe after the Queen dies. I don’t understand why people adore them so much. They are just a bunch of people who happen to have been born into or married into a family. They don’t seem particularly nice or clever. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I don’t understand why the younger royals don’t realise how badly they come across.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 11/03/2021 17:05

@StellaDendrite you could say the same about some celebrities and footballers

toomanyspiderplants · 11/03/2021 17:10

Keep it.,but slim it right down. .It would only be replaced with something else corrupt

PersimmonTree · 11/03/2021 17:27

@donewithitalltodayandxmas yes it really is that easy.

Many more people visit the palace of Versailles than England's palaces.

Getting rid of them will be fun. We get to choose a nice new national anthem instead of the awful dirge we currently have to sing. Might win a few more Olympic medals...

PersimmonTree · 11/03/2021 17:29

@toomanyspiderplants. Only if we let them. Rep of Ireland certainly did a good job with all their presidents. Why can't we do the same??

Brahumbug · 11/03/2021 17:31

@donewithitalltodayandxmas
"Empty palaces would soon be uninteresting people go to paris for eiffel tower etc not so much for empty palaces."

Really? The palace of Versailles gets 10 million visitors a year, far in excess of anywhere in the UK.

Andante57 · 11/03/2021 17:32

Getting rid of them will be fun

What sort of ‘fun’ do you have in mind? Lining them up in a basement and bayoneting them, Romanov style?
Setting up a guillotine outside Buckingham Palace?

Andante57 · 11/03/2021 17:33

Why would abolishing the royal family result in winning more Olympic medals?

toomanyspiderplants · 11/03/2021 17:34

@PersimmonTree you are more optimistic than me!

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 11/03/2021 17:39

@PersimmonTree really you think its that simple ? Its not something that could be done overnight , plenty of countries still have a royal family

PersimmonTree · 11/03/2021 17:41

@Andante57. Was meant lightheartedly. If our national anthem was a bit more rousing, like Italy's or Russia's, instead of being so depressing and overly queen-centric, athletes might be inspired to want to hear it on the podium. Who wants to train hard all year and run 26 miles only to have to hear a funeral dirge at the end of it all.

Barbados have just decided not to have the royals any more. It's a process. It has to start somewhere.

Ohforarainyday · 11/03/2021 17:45

Empty palaces would soon be uninteresting people go to paris for eiffel tower etc not so much for empty palaces.

Versailles annual visitor numbers: 10 million.
Eiffel Tower annual visitor numbers: 7 million.

Particularly impressive when you consider Versailles is very expensive and is a good 60-90 minute journey from Paris, while the Eiffel Tower is right in the middle of the city.

Blueberries0112 · 11/03/2021 17:58

Royal or no Royal, England will be interesting, they gave us The Beatles

I reckon a total wipeout style contest would be the way forward. Or maybe a huge dunk tank?

Last one standing wins a one-time only 12 month term as the first president.

My money's on Sophie.

No. Is that your idea of fun?

I was thinking more along the lines of letting them keep the queen's two inherited estates, watching them fight among themselves as to who gets which bedroom, and drawing up a list of inspirational presidential candidates. There are 66 million of us, can't all be morally bankrupt, surely ?

Andante57 · 11/03/2021 18:05

Hmmm.....maybe next time a Labour government gets in they should stop beating about the bush and just abolish the royal family as that’s what most of its members would like to do.
I expect the royal family would be quite relieved. Although the state owns a lot, they also have plenty of their own stuff (though of course there may be attempts to confiscate this) so they’d still be able to lead comfortable lives.
The state could sell off the Crown Jewels, picture collection and palaces to raise much needed funds.

Andante57 · 11/03/2021 18:07

Andante57 · 11/03/2021 18:09

You mean try to drown them as they did to witches in medieval times?
Wow, I hope I never get on the wrong side of you.

(Apart from the fact it was a joke but never mind). Yes! They've milked us long enough. What goes around comes around, even if it's 7 centuries too late. Bye Liz!!
