But they made the choice to move on from Canada - it wasn't the Palace's choice (as far as we know) - unless you have a hotline Mummy? Grin

Whilst I wouldn't put MM in the same category for talent as Reece Witherspoon and Meryl Streep, I take your point that Hollywood is no longer the 'go to' place for films. Makes you wonder why MM was so keen to move back to that area.

Maireas · 06/10/2020 16:44

It's her home and they can have a great lifestyle there, among celebrities. They can network easily, mixing with mega wealthy high profile people to promote their work and brand. I have no idea if this was the plan from the outset,(although I read of them looking at LA properties before Archie was born) but it's certainly incompatible with life in the royal family.

I don't think Reece Witherspoon puts herself in the same category as Meghan Markle, didn't she turn down an invitation to the wedding on the basis that she didn't know her?

Actually having posted that I can't find where it came from so might be wrong, ignore me.

The fact that they signed lucrative deals should be good wherever you fall on the H&M spectrum (like or dislike). Dislike - H&M needed a large amount of money for - security, paying towards Frogmore, living independently... I can't see how they could have done that living in Africa or Canada (especially within the one year and during Covid).

Surely the Africa deal was for them to still be part of the RF, so financially those points would be an issue.
Andylion · 06/10/2020 17:53

But she had no real success in her home town, and had to move to Canada for Suits.

She moved to Canada because Suits, an American show, was filmed in Canada. You wouldn't say that David Duchovny had no success in Hollywood because he had to move to Vancouver to film The X Files.

EastonSarah · 06/10/2020 17:55

A huge amount of successful US shows are shot in Canada

Andylion · 06/10/2020 17:56

Canada made sense as MM has spent a long time there, and may have felt quite familiar with the culture while at the same time it covers the CW aspect.

Canada was never part of their long game. It was a stopover to make their leaving the UK more palatable because it is in the CW.

Justmuddlingalong · 06/10/2020 18:09

Plus they had a free house. That seems to have been a consideration.

myrtleWilson · 06/10/2020 19:22

Given that in HMQ's statement after the Sandringham Summit that the D&D of S would have a transition period spending time in both Canada and the UK and that the D&D of S own website refers to the transition commencing in Spring 2020, I'm going out on a limb here to suggest that HMQ didn't "cancel Canada". If she had cancelled Canada at the Sandringham Summit, why mention it as part of the transition arrangements. If the transition was a two part process - initially the six weeks from mid January to the move to USA and then a year long spring to spring review - why mention living plans at all?

smilesy · 06/10/2020 19:33

Also when they first announced their plans to leave the UK, they said they planned to spend time in the UK and North America. They deliberately did not say which country. Going to Canada was never their long term plan. It was as pp have said, to make it appear more palatable to the UK because they were in a commonwealth country. Also there are strong rumours that they began to look for a property in LA as long ago as last summer.

EastonSarah · 06/10/2020 19:49

Covid/their visas run out/criticism for Canadian security costs, staying put in Canada would have not been a good idea. Imagine if they were still there and without (their own) income.

Blahblahblahallthetime · 06/10/2020 19:58

Do we think they will come back to the UK if Trump wins a second term?

Viviennemary · 06/10/2020 20:08

No. They won't come back to the UK. They have bought that massive house and signed the Netflix deal.

Pancakeorcrepe · 06/10/2020 20:10

Why has my message been deleted? Absolutely ridiculous.
I quoted Mummy195 and said I didn’t agree.

Pancakeorcrepe · 06/10/2020 20:12

Why was Mummy195 message not deleted then? My message was a quote from Mummy195 to which I added the words: this was never acceptable and there was a huge backlash for it.
Did you even look or think before deleting? Ridiculous.

SunbathingDragon · 06/10/2020 20:43

@Blahblahblahallthetime

Do we think they will come back to the UK if Trump wins a second term?
No, because they are all about words and not action.
MissEliza · 06/10/2020 20:51

@Myimaginarycathadfleas where did you hear that story about Reese Witherspoon?

ajandjjmum · 06/10/2020 20:54

@Myimaginarycathadfleas

Actually having posted that I can't find where it came from so might be wrong, ignore me.
I remember around the time of the wedding reading that a well-known actress had turned down an invite as 'she didn't know the bride or groom'. I couldn't remember who it was - so you may well be right!
froggygoneacourting · 06/10/2020 20:54

Why on earth would she not want to move back to the city where she was born and raised, and where her mother and many of her old friends still live?

Shooting locations have very little to do with where films and TV series are actually 'made' ie where the meetings and decisions are made, where all the power happens. Most auditions are still held in LA (or in London if it's a British show) regardless of where the project is shot. For example The X Files was filmed in Canada, but their CD suite was based in LA and so most actors were cast out of LA and flown to Canada. Meghan's auditions and screen tests for Suits certainly would have been in LA. Game of Thrones filmed in Belfast but they used a famous London-based CD; if you wanted to be on Game of Thrones you'd have to go to London to audition even if you lived in Belfast. Only the SA casting was handled by the Belfast-based team itself. Even shows like Holby City and Doctors which are filmed out of the BBC studio in Birmingham, their casting office is just north of London so anyone who auditions for those shows has to travel to London. Shows that have Writers' Rooms, the WR will usually be in LA, even if it's filmed in Canada. Ditto the production office and production meetings.

If someone didn't know anything about TV/film and has never worked in the industry, it's understandable to look at the public information and make a superficial assumption "oh X Files is Canada/GoT is Belfast/Holby is Birmingham, that must be where the whole thing is made." That simply isn't the case because TV/film doesn't work like that. It's a shame, and I personally am involved in several campaigns to de-centralise casting, because it's deeply unfair that actors outside of London lack access to so many auditions and opportunities (and it's worse in the US since the distances involved are so much greater).

If Meghan plans to audition for acting roles, or take production meetings (which presumably she will as part of her Netflix deal) then LA is still where most of those auditions and meetings take place. Not to say that she couldn't do things from elsewhere - especially now when so much is happening over Zoom - but being in LA would help.

ajandjjmum · 06/10/2020 20:58

But The X Files is not the only credit to his name!
Pancakeorcrepe · 06/10/2020 21:04

Also didn’t David Duchovny become well known with the X Files? That’s the show that made him a success. And he was the lead in it, the same cannot be said for MM.
