Since they are in the news more or less daily why not a thread on this. Latest I've read over the last few days is that Meghan is going to produce a film from a book. And later this month she is teaming up with Michelle Obama for project on gender equality. Both sound interesting projects.

Girl Up should just play this imo - Buffy's speech...

CallmeAngelina · 14/07/2020 22:13

I read the first couple of paragraphs and gave up. Too airy fairy. Get on with the message, ffs.
Couldn't face the video!!

Crispsginchoc · 14/07/2020 22:39

What a brilliant post ARoseinHarlem

CallmeAngelina · 14/07/2020 22:42

Sorry, just to be clear, I was talking about Meghan's speech - not ARoseinHarlem's fabulously insightful post! Blush

Blossom0120 · 14/07/2020 22:48

There is so much in her speech that she's made about herself to get some sort of a point across. I know speakers often draw on their own experience but this just seems, urgh I don't even know what word to use. Maybe if it was an experience she could actually talk about, then she would explain it?

"and it was the hardest part for me"

Your gut will tell you what’s right and what’s wrong; what’s fair and what's unfair. The hardest part, and it was the hardest part for me, is to chase your convictions with action

The amount of times she also uses opposites - what's right or wrong, boy or girl, black or white, fair or unfair...

Personally, I'm an absolutely rubbish public speaker. I wouldn't even drivel because my blind just goes completely blank. So I'm not any kind of expert on this but for an event advertised as speeches from 'world leaders' I would expect a lot more than this nonsense. How has she ended up labelled as a world leader? She is not a leader by any standard. Influencer maybe. There is a huge difference.

My0My · 14/07/2020 22:59

Changing the subject and huge apologies if this has been covered: can’t find any report of the Injunction she applied for last Thursday. Did it go ahead and get heard? Did she withdraw it as AN said they were not publishing any names anyway. Or, conspiracy theory, is there a hush up? Reporting banned? It’s very odd but nothing is reported about this injunction. Anyone know?

That speech is dreadful, I can’t understand why she brought up her husband and child. Was it to remind everyone who she is? Very odd

Viviennemary · 14/07/2020 23:07

Re the injunction. Somebody said it took three days for a decision. But sometimes there's an injunction on an injunction in that the result or sometimes even the application itself remains secret. Well the application isn't a secret in this case because we all know about it. But whether the decision will be made public I'm not sure.

It was me that said 3 days for a decision but I got it wrong, it's 3 days notice for the defendant to prepare their defence I think.

Unless it's a super urgent one which they can request without notice but I think they would need a very good reason for that.

I did comment on here yesterday that if we don't hear anything either way then maybe we can assume it's been granted. If it's not granted then it probably won't take long for the press to report that!

ButteryPuffin · 14/07/2020 23:16

Isn't it a superinjunction when it's not even allowed to refer to the existence of an injunction at all? So that can't be what's been applied for, because if so we wouldn't even know there had been an application.

Viviennemary · 14/07/2020 23:24

When all this is eventually over we'll have nothing left to talk about. Grin All this secrecy and court cases does ramp up interest somewhat. Not to mention speeches to a global audience. So much for wanting privacy.

A rose in harlem - I agree.
Regarding that speech, the good for me is that she articulates very clearly. She looks beautiful and 'glossy'.
The bad for me is there are lots of soundbites and relatively meaningless commentary. What experience is she pulling from personally, as we know she didn't have a disadvantaged background, she had minor success in television and her 'big break' (as in worldwide fame) came only from marriage?

calmcoolandcollected · 15/07/2020 00:43

The last I heard she was accused of faking tax returns to make her out to be a billionaire

I believe it was faking sale numbers of her makeup line. But when Coty purchased a 51% interest in the company, they valued the entire company at $1.2 billion.

BedknobsNoBroomsticks · 15/07/2020 02:41

Meghans speech was as always just a load of drivel.

iVampire · 15/07/2020 06:12

@Viviennemary

I was wondering too
which convictions and what actions. That could have been en extremely powerful part of the speech if we knew what she was actually on about st that point

C0rdelia · 15/07/2020 06:25

‘Meghan Morissette‘ look going on there.

Cartesiandebt · 15/07/2020 06:33

Seemingly lacking the conviction to name the actions?

Presumably talking about standing up to the RF, when they failed to recognise her inherent value? Or her right to the word royal? Who knows. It's just another tedioous guessing game and more style over substance.

Blossom0120 · 15/07/2020 07:23

Oh surprise surprise, aroseinharlem's excellent post was deleted overnight. Angry wtf is actually going on?

Ihavenoidewhatsgoingon · 15/07/2020 07:34

I have no idea why @ARoseInHarlem post was deleted? It was an excellent post and in my opinion didn’t go against any of the MN rules. Has someone complained about it?

OneMile · 15/07/2020 07:34

She has a great speaking voice and speaks with great confidence, she 'sounds' the part. The content is very weak - fluff and largely cliche.

I think she is approaching these speeches as though she is writing a closing argument in a tv court room drama - like she is a writer on the 'Good Wife' or some such. She doesn't have the skill of these writers though and tv court room dramas are not real life.

I think this is where the cringe factor comes in. When watching a tv series you suspend reality but when you hear someone sounding like this in a real life setting it almost becomes like parody.

Ihavenoidewhatsgoingon · 15/07/2020 07:34

Buy complained - I mean has someone complained about the post to get it removed as they didn’t like its contents

WinnieTheW0rm · 15/07/2020 07:36

I expect someone has complained about it, because that is how MN moderation works.

But it is a shame. It was a well-referenced piece, firmly rooted in MM's choices of action, and entirely 'fair comment' (in the legal-ish) sense.

I am glad I saw it.

Blossom0120 · 15/07/2020 07:50

This happened a couple of nights ago, I can't remember which poster it was now. I'm sure they questioned directly and it was actually reinstated. Overnight deletions do tend to be particularly heavy handed. (On these threads at least)

I screenshot the post and have just read it again. I genuinely believe if it had been written about anyone other than MM it wouldn't have been deleted. It does not break any rules.
