News on Meghan and Harry

Since they are in the news more or less daily why not a thread on this. Latest I've read over the last few days is that Meghan is going to produce a film from a book. And later this month she is teaming up with Michelle Obama for project on gender equality. Both sound interesting projects.

woke has no negative connotation on this side of the pond, and I will continue to use it as I choose.

calmcoolandcollected · 08/07/2020 22:27

Well she has managed to convince her prince from said misogynistic institution to not only listen but to join her so she must be pretty formidable in real life.

True, and without giving up any of the perks, including millions in funding from said "misogynistic" institution. I also disagree that an institution headed by a rather formidable woman in her own right, is misogynistic in 2020.

narrowboatgirl · 08/07/2020 22:28

Oh come on, “woke” “wokester” “wokerati” “virtue signalling blue haired wokesters” have been used as terms of abuse on this thread nonstop over the past couple of years, often in threads about racism.

You can do whatever you like and I’ll continue to assume that anyone using “woke” as a slur is a big ‘ole racist.

Roussette · 08/07/2020 22:32

Can we please stop calling black and biracial women who stand up to racism “woke.”

Totally agree. I thought it was an insulting term and was surprised to see it on here. Laurence Fox used it when having a right wing rant on Question Time, that was enough for me.

calmcoolandcollected · 08/07/2020 22:36

Then you can assume that most African Americans tied to BLM are racist, because BLM uses the term "woke", even in 2020.

narrowboatgirl · 08/07/2020 22:37

As a sneering slur?

Mummyoflittledragon · 08/07/2020 22:39

I have never seen woke used to be against those calling out racism. The uk is a very different place from the us. I take it you live over there. Perhaps listen to what people are telling you instead of slinging insults.

Meghan is considered woke because she jumps on every bandwagon. Most Brits are very conscious of racism and of offending poc. Tolerance and celebrating our similarities and differences is integral to our education system. That definitely doesn’t make them woke.

BedknobsNoBroomsticks · 08/07/2020 22:40

I would go to that conference to hear Michelle Obama speak.

Viviennemary · 08/07/2020 22:45

I think it's going to be all on line. They are calling it a virtual conference over three days. I wonder who else will be giving a speech. I understand there's going to be quite a few speakers.

TBH I'm enjoying being distracted from the old coronavirus, interested in what they (M and H) will do next.

callmeadoctor · 08/07/2020 22:47

Also wondering why Mumsnet keep deleting these threads but happy that Trump gets a pasting whenever............................

narrowboatgirl · 08/07/2020 22:49

Um, I’m British and have been a regular poster on MN for at least five years. “Wokester” and “wokerati” are CONSTANTLY used as slurs on Mumsnet. Constantly. The dozens of BLM and statue-toppling threads from May and June were full of sneering comments about “virtue signalling blue haired Goldsmith wokesters.”

You can’t have been on MN long if you’ve never seen them!

The UK not racist? Brits afraid to offend POC? Pull the other one! Obviously you missed the dozens of threads calling the BLM protestors in London and Bristol “selfish idiot thugs” and “woke virtue signallers” (while simultaneously there were multiple threads about the Neo Nazi protest in London which defended their behaviour as “free speech”).

Roussette · 08/07/2020 22:49

'Woke' is used continually by Piers Morgan negatively on GMB and on Twitter. It's his way of making fun of liberals. He usually puts the words 'self pitying' in front of it.

Eamonn Holmes used it when he showed himself up talking about Meghan. He called her weak and woke if I remember correctly.

Roussette · 08/07/2020 22:54

Trump gets a pasting whenever............................
Because what Trump does affects me, affects everyone. Leader of the free world and all that. Climate change, allies, exalting despots and dictators, Russia, Paris Accord, US/UK Trade deal, Middle East relations and so on and so on...

Rather different to MM

Puzzledandpissedoff · 08/07/2020 22:56

I don't appreciate a man coming from the epitome of privilege lecturing me, as a member of the Commonwealth, on what I "should" be doing. It was tone deaf and failed to recognize what has been done

Good to get your take on this, calmcool
Out of interest, could I ask if you consider membership of the Commonwealth as a positive, worthwhile thing or the reverse?

Viviennemary · 08/07/2020 22:57

I expect a film takes quite a long time to produce. First somebody is going to have to write the screenplay. Then money will have to be put upfront to finance the whole thing. But the article said Meghan had lots of connections so that wouldn't be a problem. But I'm sure it would take several years. But Meghan said she had no plans to go back to acting. Perhaps she'll give Harry a bit part in it.

Will it be three short sessions over the days? It certainly has the potential to be really worthwhile to hear.

Uh, and I'm not British, and will use it as the term is used where I live.

But if you feel so strongly about it, please advise the founders of the BLM they are using a term that is a slur.

To me, it doesn't mean much, so I'm neutral on it. It used to be important, but not so much anymore.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 08/07/2020 23:05

Thank you, calmcool

narrowboatgirl · 08/07/2020 23:07

Stop trying to derail the thread. It doesn’t matter where you’re from, if you’ve been on MN longer than 5 mins you know that “wokester” is frequently used on this forum as a sneering slur against anti-racism.

BLM are clearly not using it as a slur, so it’s a stupid and bizarre strawman. I mean, one of MN’s favourite insults is “are you on glue.” Doesn’t mean “pass me the superglue” is an insult outwith MN. GrinGrin

narrowboatgirl · 08/07/2020 23:09

waits for cool to claim the phrase “are you on glue” means something super positive in her country and she’s never heard it used on MN ever

Wolfgirrl · 08/07/2020 23:09

I don't think Meghan ever really intended to live a 'royal' lifestyle, aka demure dresses and tours of boring factories and allotments etc.

I think it was a useful springboard for her. Shes kept the 'duchess' title so she is obviously down with the class divide when it works in her favour.

calmcoolandcollected · 08/07/2020 23:11

You're the one derailing the thread, not me.

I have never seen the term "wokester" here. Nor have I ever read "are you on glue" here either. Perhaps you just "hang around" on the wrong threads.

So you get to decide when "woke" is used as a slur and when it isn't? Got that. Should I pass all my posts by you to determine if they pass muster with you?

Perhaps you can learn something about the world, and how language is used in different cultures, if you are willing to open your mind.

Wolfgirrl · 08/07/2020 23:12

Of course it is misogynistic. The entire monarchy is built on queens being murdered, treated as breeding machines and being expected to put up with endless affairs.

Just because we have a female queen now, it doesnt change what has led us to this point and all the other ills it represents.
