Since they are in the news more or less daily why not a thread on this. Latest I've read over the last few days is that Meghan is going to produce a film from a book. And later this month she is teaming up with Michelle Obama for project on gender equality. Both sound interesting projects.

The Kardashians are A-listers? Best laugh I've had all week. 😂

Yes, they are A-list celebrities. Kylie Jenner tweets she hates Snapchat's new design, and the stock dips by $1.3 billion (6% of its market value). She makes a youtube video including her singing "rise and shine" to her daughter, and its hashtag gets over 1 billion hits on TikTok.

They influence fashion trends and plastic surgery trends. They've been on the covers of major magazines, from Vogue to Forbes.

I've never watched any of their programs, and I don't do social media, but one can't deny their presence or disproportionate influence on culture, good or bad.

The lighting in their videos is appalling. Surely they can afford a ring light or a few soft boxes?! Or at least find a window with natural light that faces a plain background, which can't be that hard in a 15million mansion. Puzzle why there aren't any assistants or PR people advising them on really basic but obvious things.

Meghan is a very confident and fluent speaker, but doesn't have the most coherent content. Cliche trumps substance.

Quite a talent to cover the lack of depth or originality with sufficient style to make it, on first glance, seem meaningful.

If she spent sufficient time focusing on one subject and really getting to grips with it (rather than superficial tokenism) she could be really impressive.

I haven't watched the video, just seen a still from a news website and at first glance I thought MM was Cheryl Cole. She certainly looks different.

Wow. That is a really really good summary of what i was thinking but couldn't articulate nearly as well. Please send that in a tweet or whatever to all the major newspapers.

I'm glad it isn't just me. I heard nothing of substance in that video. It made me think of all those American food blogs where you have to wade through three pages of self congratulatory waffle before you get to what turns out to be a completely unremarkable recipe.

@ARoseInHarlem

Kylie Jenner doesn’t pretend to be something she’s not.

That’s also why she’s so good at whatever it is she does.

The last I heard she was accused of faking tax returns to make her out to be a billionaire, although I do try to make a point of not clicking on any articles about the Kardashians/Jenners so she may have had that status reversed by now.

Excellent post, ARoseInHarlem ... I wonder how long it'll be before it's deleted?

I watched a tribute to Billie Jean King the other night. She devoted her whole life to getting equality of pay etc for women tennis players.

@ARoseInHarlem nails it again . And it'll be deleted ( like that late night one a few nights ago) because it's far too close to the bone for some in different time zones.

Could somebody sum up exactly what she did say. I found it difficult to follow.

Excellent post @ARoseInHarlem. Agree with everything.

Ilovellamasandpenguins · 14/07/2020 21:28

Brilliant post ARoseInHarlem - you put it brilliantly and eloquently.

GeorgeMichaelsEspadrille · 14/07/2020 21:28

Good grief. The serious level of drivel comes across even more when it's in writing.

ghislaine · 14/07/2020 21:28

To me, she came across as insincere. Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama’s talk were a third as long but said so much more and spoke from a place of actual experience in working for girls and women’s rights. Clinton’s in particular had so much genuine enthusiasm for the cause. I remember her speech at the Beijing Women’s Conference - it was and is inspiring. I found Meghan Markle’s acted out talk a jumble of empty cliches.

My0My · 14/07/2020 21:32

I agree that people who are inspirational well the walk. You have to actually do something. Not just tell others what they should aspire to because you think they should.

I’m actually beginning to dislike people of privilege who adopt causes but don’t actually get down and do anything practical to help. It starts and finishes with money. Not actions.

The Queen (and Princess Anne) have been very wise in saying very little. Ever. It’s a shame H&M haven’t learnt from these two.

My0My · 14/07/2020 21:33

Walk the walk!!!

StartupRepair · 14/07/2020 21:52

Good post ARoseinHarlem . There is a kind of emptiness at the heart of this speech. It's like fairy floss.
