News on Meghan and Harry

Since they are in the news more or less daily why not a thread on this. Latest I've read over the last few days is that Meghan is going to produce a film from a book. And later this month she is teaming up with Michelle Obama for project on gender equality. Both sound interesting projects.

It is really annoying that some articles are calling her Duchess Meghan. This is totally wrong. I think their titles should be removed if they remain staying in the USA permanently.

Duchess of a county she has never been to in a country she loathes and doesn’t love in.

SuckingDieselFella · 14/07/2020 16:12

'Former D-list actress' doesn't sound so good even though it's more accurate.

Sorry if this has been linked already.

Former D list actress might be more accurate. I am serious when I ask the question of why Mrs Mountbatten Windsor is still styling herself as Duchess of Sussex. If she has such disdain for the monarchy and feels so badly treated by the institution then surely she doesn't want to keep the title or be regarded as royalty. Or is she wanting to have her cake and eat it. She probably has an awareness that having a title and being married to a minor royal will open more doors for her than if she were plain Mrs Markle, a former D list actress in a minor television series.

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 14/07/2020 16:56

KatherineParr that Telegraph article was written by Celia Walden aka Mrs Piers Morgan. It does have a ring of his views and opinions.

In all fairness, I think she did visit Brighton once! Grin

From that link:

Insiders also told Vanity Fair that the couple “looked at the details for a fabulous house in Calabasas in LA earlier this year” which would see them rubbing shoulders with A-lister neighbours such as the Kardashians.

The Kardashians are A-listers? Best laugh I've had all week. 😂

If she is, as above implies, asking to be called Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, then I think she is informally styling herself as Miss/Ms/Mrs/Mx Markle and not Mountbatten Windsor.

Speaking of Calabasas residents, I noticed coverage of Benjamin Keogh’s tragic suicide - it mentions that Lisa Marie Presley lives in this $1.8m Calabasas mansion.

Which seems reasonably appropriate for someone who doesn’t work and is only famous by virtue of having extremely famous and wealthy parents... but something tells me Meghan and Harry would be setting their sights higher

SunbathingDragon · 14/07/2020 17:55

For $1.8 million I would much prefer to be further away from my next door neighbour.

Cartesiandebt · 14/07/2020 17:56

I read Lisa Marie is in some kind of court battle at the moment with her financial advisor, she is accusing him of mismanaging her fortune and has left her $16M in the red. I'm surprised she's even able to live in a $1.8m house. I suppose her situation highlights how important it's is in Hollywood to be seen to have a big house / be successful even if your sinking.
Cartesiandebt · 14/07/2020 18:13

Elvis’s estate must generate millions each year, incredible to think that Lisa Marie’s share has been so badly mismanaged (or perhaps spent)

Serenster · 14/07/2020 18:18

She is listed as 'Meghan Markle, The Duchess of Sussex' which sounds wrong to me

I mean, it is wrong, so that's probably why! Her title is "HRH the Duchess of Sussex" only of course she has agreed to not to use the HRH bit. So "The Duchess of Sussex" would be correct. You don't add your name to the front of it, and doing so normally indicates you're divorced from the title holder - but even so you wouldn't use the surname, she'd be "Meghan, Duchess of Sussex" if that were the case. So "stage name plus title" is a made up way to refer to her, and clearly is a deliberate choice she has made as to how she wants to brand herself - making sure she herself and her royal connection are both highlighted.

Eaumyword · 14/07/2020 18:37

Once again, I'd respect her more if she just styled herself as Meghan Markle, like actresses and women of note do.

GeorgeMichaelsEspadrille · 14/07/2020 19:34

@katherineParr4

She also visited Chichester. I believe it was the green leather skirt day.

Blossom0120 · 14/07/2020 19:40

I am pretty sure every time either Meghan or Harry makes a speech on their own they have to mention each other. Harry 'my wife' and Meghan 'my husband.' Has anyone else noticed this? I haven't seen all of them from the last couple of months but the ones I have I'm sure they do!

Blossom I noticed that too. Can they not act independently of each other? I must say I think she is a very very good speaker. It was an extremely slick speech, though I felt there were veiled references to what is going on in her own life, and in some ways it felt like she was applauding herself.

ButteryPuffin · 14/07/2020 19:49

That's become a pretty standard human interest device, though. My impression is that Barack Obama did a lot to popularise it - routinely starting statements with 'Michelle and I...' I find much of what they do overtly contrived but I don't see 'my husband / wife' references in that category.

Oldbutstillgotit · 14/07/2020 19:50

@ Viviennemary I thought the same but wasn’t sure if it was the camera angle . I actually thought her face looked different when she and H did their recent broadcast .

Myimaginarycathadfleas · 14/07/2020 19:55

I think she is a confident rather than good speaker. More content and less performance would make her a better one.
