Since they are in the news more or less daily why not a thread on this. Latest I've read over the last few days is that Meghan is going to produce a film from a book. And later this month she is teaming up with Michelle Obama for project on gender equality. Both sound interesting projects.

I don’t think much of Meghan but I like the name. I’d be surprised if she has enough influence to stop people wanting to use the alternative (and more popular in the U.K.) spelling of Megan.

AnneOfQueenSables · 13/07/2020 17:38

I've always liked Megan as a name. It's odd. I don't even associate it with Meghan. I guess it's because I've liked it for years, probably from before she was born Grin

Same and so I’d be surprised if there is much truth to the DM article.

Must admit that on my long list of boy names was Henry and I’m glad I didn’t use it.

Gary Barlow went right down in my estimation after his concert tour a few years ago which had school choirs singing for one of the songs. DD was SO excited to be in the choir. I warned her that because of child protection they would likely be locked away in a back room except for the single song. And so it was. Fair enough. But did Gary pop his head round the door to say "Hi Guys, thanks for coming, well done"? Or maybe, even, sign some autographs? Did he hell. I saw other parents from other schools complaining of same on twitter, excited for their children and disappointed he had nothing to do with them.

Very poor form.

By contrast she also sang in a choir with Hayley Westenra, who was great with the children and they had a fab day.

Roussette · 13/07/2020 19:09

I went right off Gary Barlow for his massive tax avoidance all whilst encouraging people to give to Children in Need, and then saying he didn't realise he was actually avoiding tax... yeah right....he had to pay HMRC back £5million

mrscampbellblackagain · 13/07/2020 19:19

I totally think everyone should pay their taxes but I can see how some celebs are bamboozled by 'tax' experts. I doubt the expert said you are basically committing tax fraud, more you are just minimising your tax liabilities which most people do.

mrscampbellblackagain · 13/07/2020 19:20

I think the name Meg is really pretty.

Now I would have said that it's Meghan that's the alternative spelling, and Megan the usual spelling.

Yes, apart from the fact four members of TakeThat were bamboozled then. Not one of them questioned more. Jason and Robbie didn't go into the scheme.

I always think of the name Megan as a lovely Welsh name.

mrscampbellblackagain · 13/07/2020 19:37

I don't think any of them were necessarily the brightest though Roussette. I had some dealings with tax matters a couple of years back, our liabilities were condensed to a 57 page document so I can have some sympathy for people who get taken in by 'experts'. Hastens to add out document was prepared by a very reputable lawyer so nothing dodgy there.

However, with tax as with everything else if it sounds too good to be true then it generally is Smile

Blossom0120 · 13/07/2020 19:39

I'm not sure what the link is between children in need and paying tax - the hypocrisy would actually be GB encouraging us to pay our tax when he hasn't been paying it. But anyone with millions in the bank will be using professional accountants and tax specialists, they are the ones giving financial advice and the investments were legal. But any excuse for papers to bash celebs eh Wink

Presumably, Rousette, you will forgive Gary of his hypocrisy like you have Harry and his environmental campaigns. Grin

I agree with you and that’s what I said - Megan is the more popular spelling of the name.
Roussette · 13/07/2020 19:47

Mrscampbell totally agree. Boyband/lots of money/avoid tax/hand it over to experts etc... recipe for disaster!

Blossom the public were outraged about his hypocrisy with Children in Need, owing massive tax, I remember it at the time, it's not something I've dreamed up. Tax avoidance might be legal in a criminal sense but that's about it.

I am commenting on Gary Barlow because it was the subject on here as I typed. I've commented about Harry and environmental issues before and on happy thread
Smile

@CallmeAngelina

If an organisation had hacked emails and texts, they would be unwise to publish their findings, surely. But what they could do, is to dig deeper once they know where to look, and then maybe uncover things that can be verified from a different source.
This is the difference between "information" (can be relied on as a source of a story) and "intelligence" (can't be openly relied on but can be used as the basis to investigate a story to find information that can be published. But yes, the legality of their attempts to get information they can publish can get them into trouble.

A good example of this is the case against Max Mosley. The News of the World had intelligence (i.e.someone had told them) that he engaged in sadomasochistic sex orgies with prostitutes. If the paper asked him, he would have course denied it, and in that kind of situation they can't publish the story. So they set up a full-on operation to get information they could publish. Being a tabloid, this meant paying a prostitute £20,000 to wear a hidden camera and video the session. She duly did, and the News of the World published their exclusive. This of course raised the issues of whether her taping the consensual sexual activities that occurred were a legitimate invasion of the parties' privacy. The News of the World claimed it was legitimate because Mosley was involved in Nazi role playing, and as he was a company director and public figure (with a fascist for his father), this made it a matter in the public interest. Unfortunately for them, Mosley those to sue them on the basis it was just a normal dungeon S&M fantasy session, with no Nazi element at all, and the News of the World had to accept that they had no case on this point. So - they got dinged for acting illegally in gather the information they published.

SunbathingDragon · 13/07/2020 20:59

I think the majority of ways that the media get their stories are really underhand. To me, it’s completely understandable why they are hated by some celebrities/those that tend to feature in their columns. I can also see why some choose to barter with the media (ie give an exclusive interview in exchange for a proposed article that is unflattering never seeing the light of day).

SuckingDieselFella · 14/07/2020 13:09

The article about Rishi's coffee mug is more interesting than another wealthy actress and her preaching.
www.express.co.uk/news/royal/1309017/royal-news-meghan-markle-prince-harry-la-move-wedding-spt
This seems like a whole load of contradicting sources who don’t know what is going on or went on.

I can understand someone wanting a home in the country they are from, especially when their family live there and they have the money to afford it. I’d be surprised if HMQ really told Harry to stay away from the U.K. - and how will he do that when he is a U.K. citizen and has no other passport or legal right to reside elsewhere?

AnneOfQueenSables · 14/07/2020 13:46

Some of their practices are underhand and would amount to entrapment but the majority of their stories will still come from people calling them up including celebrities and their friends, not to mention conversations with friendly editors in the pub, chatting with a journalist over lunch, arranging photo opportunities, etc.
I worked on a magazine. I'm still friends with editors and journalists. There's no shortage of content that falls across your desk.

KatherineParr4 · 14/07/2020 15:38

What time is the speech?

Cartesiandebt · 14/07/2020 15:48

girlup.org/programs/leadership-summit

I think the summit starts at 4pm, there's a livestream at the link above

She is listed as 'Meghan Markle, The Duchess of Sussex' which sounds wrong to me

KatherineParr4 · 14/07/2020 15:52

She just can’t stop trading on her Royal connections can she?
