HaM originally intended to establish a foundation. They changed that to a non profit. I assume that was when someone explained to them that in the US, foundations are mostly seeded with money from their founders. Foundations are also subject to far more operating restrictions and far more IRS oversight than are non profits.
American NPOs typically spend very little on charitable activities, something like 5-15% of total revenue by those NPOs that carry on charitable activities. "Charitable activities" has a very specific definition for IRS purposes. Unlike a foundation, there is no requirement for an NPO to carry out any charitable activities. An NPO's net profit cannot benefit any individual. But, NPOs can pay salaries and expenses (as can foundations) to individuals.
Personally, I don't believe HaM's non profit will generate much funding from public donations. They are going to have to rely on funding from established foundations, or on any merchandise they sell related to their NPO.
