yolo I remember that, I think we replaced it with train wreck at the time.

TangibleTuTu · 28/05/2020 21:07

It doesn't matter if nobody "buys any Sussex tat" if what they are selling is tv/film productions created by some kind of partnership. We have absolutely no idea what they are thinking or planning. They were very successful at bringing attention to charities and causes they care about. I think the idea that they are planning on selling water bottles with their trademark is unlikely. They took out trademarks just as the Cambridgees have, to protect themselves, so others couldn't create any unapproved "tat". What they did are exactly what other branches of the RF did. But that doesn't make a story of outrage.

Everyone is going to struggle to find work in the new economy post COVID. They are obviously under a pretty short time constraint with this unfolding crisis so it remains to be seen how they will be as financially successful as they need to be by March 2021.

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 28/05/2020 21:08

morehippo it was very good actually, W seems to be very empathetic and able to get other men to talk (wft?!!) one of the groups focussed on was bereaved fathers, and they were able to use the football as a kind of common language (sport, exercise etc) and then actually talk to each other over a beer or 3. (to paraphrase).

I think support for men is so limited, and so difficult for them to actually want to access, let alone do it ...

ButteryPuffin · 28/05/2020 21:09

What do you think is their motivation for doing the book, Tu? That won't be money either as they won't get a massive slice of that.

ButteryPuffin · 28/05/2020 21:11

Windsor did Anne do tours? I know she's done loads of engagements in the UK for many years now, of course. But thought she was allowed to pursue her equestrian career back in the 70s? Fortunate for her if so.

TangibleTuTu · 28/05/2020 21:19

I personally think they would be better off lying low and letting a lot of the anger and outrage die down. But I am not a PR professional and maybe keeping the fire stoked and staying in the public eye is a priority, who knows? (shrug). I do wonder if Lady C is getting some whispers from those within the palace so there is a counter-weight to the Omid book, as her book about Diana although slated at the time, apparently turned out to be pretty accurate (I have never read it so have no idea).

EdithWeston · 28/05/2020 21:24

She has always done lots of tours - many for Save the Children, but also for HMQ (two or three a year)

She did the Blue Peter Royal Safari in the early 1970s, probably scaled back in her child-producing years

MoreHippoThanPenguin · 28/05/2020 21:24

yolo, I think that sounds great, will try to watch it on catch-up.

I agree, it seems to be so hard for boys / men these days. If PW is able to make boys/men see that it is ok to talk about feelings and seek support that is amazing.

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 28/05/2020 21:31

agree morehippo it's still hard for men and boys to actually talk and express their emotions so if football or crochet or whatever allows them to do it then that's a good thing.

And Anne has done loads of tours in her younger years, given that she's over 70 now seems fair enough she hasnt done many lately. I also suspect, that being Anne, she wont take them on unless she can see a benefit for the UK in it being her doing it rather than someone else (I know what I mean!!)

7Worfs · 28/05/2020 21:35

she wont take them on unless she can see a benefit for the UK in it being her doing it rather than someone else

Haven’t thought about that, but sounds right.

There’s crazy amount of coverage on WAK tours, and especially on what Kate is wearing. Grin

FannyCann · 28/05/2020 21:38

Good question Windsor I'm old enough to remember Captain Mark Phillips in his heyday - hero of the pony club! Grin

I wouldn't like to give a definitive answer but I don't have any memory of Mark accompanying Anne on tours which isn't to say he never did any.

My sister stayed in a household where Anne and Mark would stay for a horsey event on the estate. The cook got in a tizz at the prospect of meeting a Princess but Anne marched through the kitchen, smacked the dog and shut it in the boot room without a word to the cook.
At dinner Anne called time on Mark topping up his drinks with a peremptory "You've had quite enough".
Anyway she's a good egg and one of my favourites. Grin

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 28/05/2020 21:40

fannycann where is the like/laugh button? A la the Windsors, I can just see her doing that!

TangibleTuTu · 28/05/2020 21:42

I am not remotely surprised to see that with MM off the scene the tabloid press and even Tatler are starting to turn up the heat once more on Catherine. It was easy to make them into the saintly proto-Queen and the evil pushy foreigner when needing to sell lots of copy or for clickbait. Now it's time to push Catherine off her perch again. It's always seems the Royal women that are particularly highly criticized. I don't think it's a coincidence that most media is owned and lead by the same kind of men who are close advisers to the RF.

HarryDaylight · 28/05/2020 22:05

What nonsense.

SenecaFallsRedux · 28/05/2020 22:14

Anne refused an HRH and Earldom for her husband

There was no HRH on offer for Mark Phillips. He would have been made an Earl like Princess Margaret's husband and their children would be titled as children of an earl: Viscount Whatever and Lady Zara. A younger son would have been a Mr., although with "Honourable" in front of his name.

Sittingontheveranda · 28/05/2020 22:21

It's always seems the Royal women that are particularly highly criticized

I’ve thought the same. This week it’s all about Kate being ‘furious’ that she is no longer free to do the school runs and her ‘steeliness’. I doubt she is furious at all.

I thought it was very unfair that a press statement was issued immediately when they allowed the media to literally pull Meghan’s name and character to shreds.

The palace has a huge amount of control that they would have been well justified in using to crush the continued onslaught of Meghan.

Now Kate will be rich pickings again with the excuse they knew what they were marrying into. I don’t think any woman could be prepared for the viciousness they endure.

TangibleTuTu · 28/05/2020 22:27

And as often noted on here men that marry in are left to their own devices. Eugenie will still get snide remarks while her husband Jack gets to stay anonymous. If Eugenie had been male no doubt the papers would obsess about the new spouse. Its only a matter of time until Sophie Wessex gets thrown under the bus, especially as she has been asked to step up and become more visible.

Winterlife · 28/05/2020 22:31

Sophie was thrown under the bus two decades ago, in a PR newspaper "sting" scandal, two years after her marriage. She was indiscreet, it was caught on tape, and she disappeared from public for a lengthy period after that.

SunbathingDragon · 28/05/2020 22:40

And as often noted on here men that marry in are left to their own devices.

Prince Philip has had many scathing things written about him. Mike also hasn’t been let off the hook. Autumn, on the other hand, rarely, if ever, features in negative articles.

The queen has three sons and three grandsons who have married compared to one daughter and two granddaughters, so of course there will be fewer articles on the men who have married in and that’s because there aren’t as many of them!

BarleylemonPenguin · 28/05/2020 23:28

Prince Philip has had many scathing things written about him. Mike also hasn’t been let off the hook

I think that Edward has also had some negative material written about him as has Prince Charles. I still remember a very withering (but, funny) article about PC by Julie Burchill. I am not sure how many royal men actually do manage to escape negative media portrayals.

Sittingontheveranda · 28/05/2020 23:32

Gosh Mango I was going to let it pass, but I'll try to explain instead.
You do realise that when photoshoots are set up, items of furnishing or ornaments are carefully placed to set the scene? They are called props

Gosh Fannycam I was going to let it pass but I will try to explain instead. You do realise that working people don’t have any need to resort to props. Don’t you? Comparing a pretend picnic for a magazine is quite different to giving the public a glimpse of their current working environment. Charles felt no need to set up props when the photographers filmed his desk for Global maybe because he didn’t need to. You do realise that don’t you.

TangibleTuTu · 28/05/2020 23:57

Winterlife yes, and unfortunately being out from under the radar may mean she now will be a target again. She was suitably chastened the first time round, gave up working outside the RF, and retired to the Wessexes huge Windsor pile. Then has quietly been the Queens favorite while beavering away at worthy causes. Being back in the public eye seems to signal "new blood" to the tabs though. I wouldn't be surprised in the least if she is also shoved off the pedestal once again.

Barleylemon yes we have to cast our minds back to that one Julie Burchill article and yes, weren't they mean about Edward at some point?? For the women just open today's paper. One of them, at least, will be in there.

Winterlife · 29/05/2020 02:20

@Sittingontheveranda, I was once filmed for a fluff piece on the news about a legal issue. The news team did rearrange my desk, and added/subtracted items from it.

Winterlife · 29/05/2020 05:24

Now remembering more, my desk was cleared, and I was given a yellow legal pad (something I had never used before, nor since) and pen. A few legal books re the subject matter of the fluff piece, were added, spines visible, to my desk.

My computer desk, which was behind my desk, was also cleared of everything but my computer.

caperberries · 29/05/2020 07:37

I'd hate beyond hate to be photographed in my working environment! That said, if the photographers were coming over, I'd be sure to tidy up my desk & perch there serenely, rather than allowing them to see me in my more natural habitat - on the sofa, in loungewear, with the dog snoozing beside me, typing away at my laptop and fielding endless interruptions from children.

Ridiculous to make a judgment about how much work someone does based on one picture!
