Now remembering more, my desk was cleared, and I was given a yellow legal pad (something I had never used before, nor since) and pen. A few legal books re the subject matter of the fluff piece, were added, spines visible, to my desk

It was the total lack of anything to do with work on her desk, as well as the weird setup in his desk (filing cabinet turned the wrong way, etc). It was suggestive of a couple that doesn’t do much of anything.

Prince Charles’ desk has been photographed multiple times, and has papers everywhere on it, and the Queen in her younger years had a proper desk that was organised but definitely had a lot of papers and files stored on and around it. You know, like a normal working person’s desk.

The desk is just one aspect. They don’t seem to do much of anything and people try to shut down the criticism with ‘they are a young family’

Well, both are pushing forty and don’t even manage part-time jobs and have nannies and staff to take care of the domestic side of things, so yeah, I do think people should have higher expectations of these two.

As I say, W&K only look good compared to the wild ride we’re getting from H&M

ToastedHaMSandwich · 29/05/2020 08:08

All desks should be cleared everyday to allow for cleaning properly. Especially during this pandemic. I thought it was to highlight that and lead by example.

DateLoaf · 29/05/2020 08:10

Nobody knows what people’s desks looked like before the film crew arrived but I have had the same as Winter and they changed whatever they need to set the scene or to get a decent view, they aren’t there to try to portray what reality looks like exactly.

But the point was that people were making is that the state of someone’s desk has nothing to do with the amount of work they have got going on. That much seems obvious but someone up thread was saying Kate obviously wasn’t that pressed for time because her desk was too tidy Grin

DateLoaf · 29/05/2020 08:16

Good point Toasted hadn’t thought of that. There’s going to be a clash of views at many office workplaces that have communal meeting tables and hot desking (and I suppose to a lesser extent restaurant and cafe tables too which willl need wiping down between uses 100% of the time) train and plane and ferry seats, any kind of waiting room or indoor public seating, about how those spaces are used and cleaned and how often.

TimeLady · 29/05/2020 08:17

I'm in the process of selling my house. My desk will be tidied and 'dressed' prior to any viewings. As will my kitchen, bathrooms etc; all superfluous items will temporarily packed away.

FannyCann · 29/05/2020 08:25

I would be surprised if Kate had any clutter anywhere in her house let alone on her desk but additionally I think they are careful about privacy. They know that photos of the Queen and PC in their homes are closely examined with every personal item up for discussion. She chooses not to let anything personal be seen. As is her prerogative.
Even down to turning the filing cabinet around - maybe she didn't want the drawer labels to be visible or something. There will have been a reason for it for sure and the reason will not have been that they do so little work they don't even know how to use a filing cabinet.

Wills desk was the one with the backwards filing cabinet.

And Kate’s desk was not simply tidy. It was basically bereft of anything work-related. William’s desk was not much better.

It suggests that they know they should be ‘seen’ working but have little idea about what that means in reality.

All the European royals had more plausible looking ‘work-at-home’ desks as does Prince Charles and even the Queen in her younger days.

But sure, keep paying your taxes and make excuses for their laziness if you want. I won’t.

DateLoaf · 29/05/2020 08:34

Mango i’d say the desk Isn’t any aspect of this at all. Lots of people on my work video calls are working from any table they can find out of necessity: in a bedroom, kitchen, living room, hallway, working sitting on their beds or turning an ironing board into a stand up desk. These are in their kids‘ bedrooms or on the stairs or perched against a windowsill with their laptop, anywhere they can get away from flatmates and partners and children who are also working from home etc etc. Our employer is buying desks and office chairs for a lot of staff but many of them have no space to put them. Trust me we are really busy and have a ton of work to do... Smile

I think there’s already a thread about W&K and what they are doing at the moment for coronavirus. This thread is about H&M leaving the RF and making their new life for themselves in LA. That’s because it’s topical and a major break with royal life which has not happened for generations, prompting some thinking on what royalty and celebrity is all about and how social media and the press and public and private funding play into that.

It allows us to think about wider RF family dynamics which we probably have our own reasons to take an interest in.
Personally i also have found real news too stressful to watch and engage in a lot of the time lately, so here I am chatting away about something less close to home.

Rhubarbisevil · 29/05/2020 08:36

Their KP room was scrutinised when the Obamas visited. Maybe Kate doesn’t want the same for Anmer.

That said, someone posted their desk on IG. The room is immaculate and the desk contained one laptop. I firmly believe that they live a minimalist, beautiful life. Which takes up a lot of cleaning time.

Good point bout the papers v kids.

Can you imagine Louis scribbling all over a briefing document and leaving jam on the interesting bits?

Ok but that is literally not a concern in a huge country pile

MangoFeverDream · 29/05/2020 08:41

Good thing they have staff for that.

Can you imagine Louis scribbling all over a briefing document and leaving jam on the interesting bits?

Can you imagine the nanny letting Louis anywhere near the desk? Oh my, how did the Queen manage things with four kids running about the place 🙄

They ... are not like the rest of us, taking video calls in any available space. It’s actually pretty insulting to suggest that.

DateLoaf · 29/05/2020 08:54

Agreed. I am saying that having a desk or not, how your desk looks if you have one, has no relevance to your workload.

That’s still true if you have your own study room in a mansion or you’re sitting on your kid’s bed taking calls working with your laptop on your knee.

I think it’s ridiculous to say any of the royals aren’t busy just because they don’t have to do any housework or cooking. Anyone in public life generates extra correspondence, invitations, interview requests, requests from fans, charities who want their support, they have travel arrangements that need to be made, need diary coordination, it all adds up to lot of admin before you even get on to the PR, comms and strategy stuff which will be done by yet more people. That’s just if your job is being famous, famous people with an actual profession- being head of state, actors, philanthropists, musicians etc will all have relevant staff to help with that.

Working in a team, or even leading it, which doesn’t always go with being the ‘front of house‘ person, doesn’t mean that anyone in the team have nothing to do individually.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 29/05/2020 09:15

Is it just me that doesn't actually care if the royals aren't working their fingers to the bone?

FannyCann · 29/05/2020 09:20

But sure, keep paying your taxes and make excuses for their laziness if you want. I won’t.

Are you going to opt out of the tax system? Make a deduction of whatever amount it is you think goes to the Royal family?

Allflightscancelled · 29/05/2020 09:21

My desk is always covered in stuff, even when I'm not very busy, like today. a colleague of mine who was always super efficient used to have one pen and one piece of paper on her desk at all times. She was very good at her job. The bitch.

FannyCann · 29/05/2020 09:23

Not me Cat
Actually I hope they are all thoroughly enjoying lots of peace, the unprecedented empty diary and family time locked down in their various estates. Though I feel sorry for the Queen. Apparently she's not allowed to go down to the stables to see her horses which seems tough. Can't the grooms stand back far enough? Grin

Rhubarbisevil · 29/05/2020 09:31

mango - the immaculate life desk... my apologies and I wasn’t clear. When I referee to “someone”, that “someone” is not a member of the RF and is actually known to me. They have no staff. If they have any help at all then it is from a cleaning lady who cannot work at the moment. Some people are very tidy on their own.

TimeLady · 29/05/2020 10:11

DH keeps a very tidy desks are

TimeLady · 29/05/2020 10:13

Pressed too soon! DH keeps a very tidy desk; he also has a very efficient filing system. I suspect the two are related, as I am the polar opposite. I can't find anything if I 'file it away'.

mrscampbellblackagain · 29/05/2020 10:31

Thought we were all paperless now anyway?

Honestly, of course that's now how they work in real life. I suspect Kate sits at the kitchen table in her gym gear checking emails/reading briefing documents.

And to compare to the Queen, I don't think she was umm terribly hands on with her children when they were small.

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 29/05/2020 11:09

Today should have been Beatrice’s wedding day. Poor B I actually feel quite sorry for her although glad that she doesn’t have the whole Markle debacle hanging over her. Maybe when they rearrange it the circus round H&M will have dissipated enough for the bride to be centre stage.

YgritteSnow · 29/05/2020 11:59

It suggests that they know they should be ‘seen’ working but have little idea about what that means in reality.

No it doesn't. It suggests that every single non essential thing has been removed so that they won't be scrutinised and pondered over by millions of people.

MissEliza · 29/05/2020 12:29

Jan Moir really made me laugh this morning when writing about 'tightgate': I like to think of the pair of them yanking a tiny pair of tights between them until they ripped in half. Grin

DateLoaf · 29/05/2020 13:01

Good for Meghan, keeping in touch with her patron charities. I’m sure she is hearing at first hand how these are unprecedentedly hard times even for established household name charities.

Government support which is obviously cash-limited, covers COVID related charity activity - loads of other charities who don’t directly support COVID but do crucial work are going to be in dire straits or will close.

Be great if Meghan got a load other high profile Patrons together to write a very high profile letter to the government about that issue. That’s my free PR advice of the day. She can transition to a more political role now and align herself with other very high profile figures who support charities and can advocate for them.
