New thread

Has anyone seen that Lady Colin Campbell has written a book on Harry and Meghan using insider information. Apparently she’s has members of the Markle family to stay. She’s brave!

I definitely think that M & H have had a lot of lies and manipulation of the truth told about them in the tabloids. On the other hand their flouncing, the preplanned Sussex Royal website and their comments at that time are hard to come back from.

It looks like the RF were really trying to work with them but they ended up screwing their future with their fait accompli. These shenanigans also revealed what a great job so many of the professional palace PR people are doing because so many of the Royals when left to themselves make complete twits of themselves with their hubris. Andrew, Edward, Fergie all cocked up in the past royally Grin . Can you imagine Prince Philip and Charles without the grey suits and PR?

caperberries · 18/05/2020 20:57

I read recently that most of the things the Daily Mail published about MM were actually true, eg the falling out with staff, the tiara business, the dramas behind the scenes. This is why they had to mention such vague & strange stories in their recent court case, eg about the cost of their copper bath. They couldn’t complain about the reports re MM’s behaviour - because they were true.

BarleylemonPenguin · 18/05/2020 20:59

Fortunately there is plenty of first hand evidence, tv interviews, video appearances, Instagram posts, all of which paint a pretty clear picture

Well, quite. I'm not sure why but many threads on MN put great store by 'The Tabloids', as if people can't see for themselves what is going on. I think that most can form the right judgement when they see someone plunder the public purse and then do a runner just as only one person turned up to see Andrew on his recent visit to Australia.

7Worfs · 18/05/2020 20:59

@Wolfgirrl I'm behind on the thread (haven't read it since my last post, catching up on work) but I assume you refer to the money being repaid back into the sovereign grant pot?

No sarcasm, the money came from that pot, which is allocated at the discretion of the Queen. Technically it's given to her and the RF in exchange for royal duties.
So HAM misused the funds by flouncing, and have to put it back in the pot where it will serve its purpose: public funds for working royals.
The public haven't 'lost' money as it's the Queen's annual allowance. But we didn't get anything in exchange for it.

Tezza1 · 18/05/2020 21:00

@ghislaine: That group of NZ knitters! What a lovely story.

Viviennemary · 18/05/2020 21:16

I wonder what kind of payout she'll get if they do divorce. It will be very messy I'd imagine. The tabloids will have a field day. She'll take him to the cleaners under Californian law I read.

Winterlife · 18/05/2020 21:28

Harry doesn’t have anything to be taken to the cleaners.

Butterymuffin · 18/05/2020 21:31

Can his money be subject to a fifty fifty split if it's a) not in the US and b) tied up in trusts?

Winterlife · 18/05/2020 21:33

All she will be entitled to is 50% of the growth in his investment assets since the date of marriage.

Wolfgirrl · 18/05/2020 21:33

@7Worfs

You have got to be joking me! So our tax money was used (via the grant) to renovate the mansion of a minor royal who has decided to quit, so the money is going back to the middle man rather than the source? In a time of inevitable recession?

If the full cost isn't deducted from next year's grant they truly are taking the piss.

Winterlife · 18/05/2020 21:34

It’s in the linked article, Wolf.

Womanlywiles · 18/05/2020 21:38

I imagine the RF have lots of trusts etc. to try and protect the Crown. MM would be expected to be maintained at the same standard of living, however if they don't actually buy a place and keep couch surfing that may not go in her favor. It's very hard to get mortgages for very expensive homes in the current crisis. So they will probably have to buy something outright as they don't have income.

PC would have to promise to provide them with an income indefinitely to satisfy the bankers otherwise. I am not sure how comfortable he would be doing that because I am sure his lawyers are thinking ahead for a potential divorce. I wouldn't be surprised if they all already manoeuvring in the UK to protect the RF and even Harry financially as much as possible. I doubt he is managing his money and whoever is will be very careful. It's easy to see that if it came to that Meghan would take no prisoners. She is always laser focused on her goal, it fact there probably would be ruthless lawyers on both sides. I really hope it doesn't come to that Sad. I could imagine PH would not have the stomach for it and would want a quick settlement.

7Worfs · 18/05/2020 21:39

@Wolfgirrl I would think a change in the grant requires the government/parliament to do something official.

I'm not feeling worse off, but they better pay it back so that Anne or Sophie can use it for their worthwhile work.

Wolfgirrl · 18/05/2020 21:42

@Winterlife I can't find anything?

RosesandIris · 18/05/2020 21:48

It was really heartwarming to read about the NZ knitters. A ray of sunshine in a rather bleak landscape.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 18/05/2020 21:57

Never mind the money, H would be devastated if his marriage failed and I believe he will do just about anything to avoid that happening. Unfortunately this puts him in a very vulnerable position. I have said before that I think he is in for a very difficult marriage as he will always be second guessing how to make MM happy.

Mamamia456 · 18/05/2020 21:59

Can you please stop all the nasty speculation about what will happen if they get divorced. They've only been married for 2 years, have a one year old baby and by all accounts look very happy.

WindsorBlues · 18/05/2020 22:05

@mamamia456 I find it odd that you come to this thread just to be offended and give off about nearly every post.

There are plenty of threads on mumsnet that rile me up but for a happier life and lower blood pressure I choose not to engage on them.

Mamamia456 · 18/05/2020 22:10

WindsorBlues - Is this thread only for negative posts then?

I'm perfectly happy thank you and my blood pressure is fine.

Wolfgirrl · 18/05/2020 22:11

To be fair there isn't anything positive to say Mamamia

ArchePenguin · 18/05/2020 22:17

To be fair, the RF does have a high percentage of failed marriages. 75% of the Queen’s children are divorced with one of them marrying a divorcee, the first of the Queen’s Grandchildren are in the process, another is marrying a man who broke off his engagement (not quite a divorce but...), the Queen’s sister divorced, the Queen’s nephew is going through the process of divorce.....

I think the topic of divorce within the RF is not exactly off limits.

Winterlife · 18/05/2020 22:20

@Mamamia456, you can post as you wish, but it's not your place to tell others what they can or cannot, or should, or should not post.

@Wolfgirll, I believe it was reported in The Times. I can't find the article now, though.

Mamamia456 · 18/05/2020 22:20

Wolfgirrl - Well there is, by all means question the money for the renovations but to speculate on what will happen if they divorce is just crass.

Viviennemary · 18/05/2020 22:22

As Meghan is already divorced once statistically speaking this marriage is highly likely to end in divorce. In the US 67% chance of divorce.
