I guess I'm an old gimmer but if it was my child's first birthday I'd put him in a nice outfit, not in a video on the internet dressed just in a nappy. For a child who is 7th in line to the throne it's just undignified.

I don't dislike Meghan. I'm still baffled about what has gone so horribly wrong less than two years after the wedding. Like many people I cheered them on, wished them well and thought that she was a stunningly beautiful bride. But I can't reconcile that this time last year we weren't allowed to know where or exactly when she'd given birth, or later, who the godparents were, yet fast forward a year and we're watching videos of Archie wriggling on his mother's knee just wearing a nappy and vest. It doesn't make sense.

So different to the charming, and low key, photos of Louis we saw a couple of weeks ago.

Totally agree annie

Yep, and those pictures will be on the internet for the rest of Archie's life (in what looks like a bit of a soggy nappy and babygro). What was wrong with a t-shirt and shorts? You dont have to go the full RF vibe, but that (lack of) outfit seemed a bit "look at us laid back Californians" to me.

Serg · 06/05/2020 22:07

It’s a sweet video, but that’s definitely a full, soggy nappy.

thisenglishlife · 06/05/2020 22:09

What is low key about the Louis/Charlotte photos and not this video? They're all perfectly fine, the Archie one is the least set up.

Why are only the Sussexes chasing Instagram likes, when the Cambridges have spent a lot of time and effort on their account?

They’re so messed up.
Sure they are.

Yes I noticed the soggy nappy too. Oh dear.

I think the video could have been done better. Maybe it would have looked less awkward if Meghan was only reading and showing the book to Archie, then they could have a small window insert at the corner of the screen showing what page they where on? It could also help other children watching it, follow the story.

I also agree with the comments about the clothing. They knew this would be watched by millions and should have made an more of an effort that a play suit. Let's not kid ourselves they're in a mega mansion and the air con / lack of it really isn't an issue for them. Although I've Harry isn't as well turned out these days either.

coronabeer · 06/05/2020 22:16

Surprised that no-one has picked up on the "Archie's Book Club" sticker on the front of the book. That's why MM was trying so hard to read to an audience, rather than her son. They're flogging books, using their "private citizen" son's name. Ker-ching.

coronabeer · 06/05/2020 22:20

Actually, scrap that comment. Apparently the book was a gift from Oprah who puts a "Book Club" sticker on books that she gives, featuring the child's name. Bit weird (of Oprah, I mean and the "Book Club" bit). But if I could delete my above comment, I would do.

SirVixofVixHall · 06/05/2020 22:21

Charlotte looks like the Queen there. Lovely pictures.

Why are only the Sussexes chasing Instagram likes

I don't know, why are only Harry and Meghan chasing Instagram likes.

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 06/05/2020 22:24

And by taking the photos herself, Kate controls the situation and the images released. Clever. I actually think the RF must be thanking god for Kate thse days.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 06/05/2020 22:25

I don't see the point in comparing the Cambridges' and the Sussexes' photos. The Cambridges' are more polished but they've been at it for longer.

I have no issue with the video, It wasn't particularly successful as an exercise but any of us who has wrangled a lively one year old while trying to do something else will sympathise.

I'm not worried about the nappy either. I think it shows their inexperience but then again they don't have a lot of guidance to rely on.

It was nice to see Archie, and a video instead of a still shot was an unexpected bonus. It was brave too. After all, they were putting their baby son into the arena where they themselves have received a lot of criticism.

The contrast between this and how they handled the news of his birth may show that they are at last learning to relax a bit.

thisenglishlife · 06/05/2020 22:26

Are they?
If so, are only the Sussexes the only royals chasing likes? Lots of effort is made on all the royal accounts.
Did you read the above article?

StartupRepair · 06/05/2020 22:28

I think the video is a bit clunky because it is trying to serve 2 purposes, reading a story to the viewer and also to Archie. Agree that just reading to him would have been better. He looks like a sweet and strong baby who loves being read to. As ever, it is the multiple layers that are annoying. What is their relationship with Save?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 06/05/2020 22:35

I guess I'm an old gimmer but if it was my child's first birthday I'd put him in a nice outfit, not in a video on the internet dressed just in a nappy

Fellow old gimmer here and I thought the same, but mostly I thought it a shame Harry wasn't included - after all lovely Archie has two parents, no?

thisenglishlife · 06/05/2020 22:40

The lack of a proper outfit is strange, but I doubt it was recorded today.

Save the Children are doing a new reading each day, both UK and US famous faces.

FannyCann · 06/05/2020 22:43

As a few pp have said, a shorter book like the 'That's not my...' books would have been better.

It's a very odd choice of book. A one year old isn't able to understand the relatively sophisticated optical illusion of whether the drawing is of a duck or a rabbit or get the joke, if there is one. I doubt Archie has had a trip to a farm zoo or wherever to see a rabbit or feed the ducks yet. And then at the end a dinosaur appeared. Confused
Of course babies just like being cuddled, talked to and having attention. Still, there are more fun books for babies out there. Mine loved Where's Spot, and could understand the concept of a dog. And lots of dog books involving lots of woofing. And a peek a boo book with the baby hiding under a blanket.
Anyway, he obviously likes chewing on that book.

LizzieSiddal · 06/05/2020 22:53

Gosh look at all those deletions. I’m not sure why MNHQ allow these nasty threads.

Andylion · 06/05/2020 22:56

*I’m not a fan of theirs (private jets, billing the UK for the security and Frogmore), but I thought it was a perfectly nice video. It was for charity so I assume she wanted viewers to feel included so was showing the pages (a shorter board book might have been better). I always read to my kids in dramatic voices (& accents), it would be odd if she was reading it flat (& would be called a bad actress if she did).

No issue from me from what he’s wearing - it’s already pretty hot in southern California, even with air conditioning they’ll dress him for being in and out of the house. He’s a baby, so I don’t see the problem with seeing his nappy. He’s hardly going to be in a wee suit is he? By age 2 it might seem a bit less seemly, but he has the look of a baby not a small child at this stage*

Agreed. I don't get the criticism of the video at all and I am not a fan of either of them.

Winterlife · 06/05/2020 22:57

Zero deletions in the last 10 pages. Are you certain you’re on the correct thread?🤔🤔

LizzieSiddal · 06/05/2020 23:01

There are many deletions in the last 3 pages!

Winterlife · 06/05/2020 23:03

Nope. I see none.

LizzieSiddal · 06/05/2020 23:15

You need to look a bit closer then, there are loads from today alone.

Winterlife · 06/05/2020 23:16

I went through every post back to page 18.
