Hasn't Prince Harry learnt anything from his mother's experience of having someone write her biography 'to set the record straight'? Couldn't they have at least waited until after his grandmother's death, however long that might be?

Apologies if this has already been mentioned, I've been uncharacteristically busy with work today (and a big 'huraaaaaaayyyy' for that) so I'm behind with the thread:

Mammamia said a few pages back that I was condoning press behaviour - I was not. I was merely saying “this is how it is, why was she surprised by it/thought it was aimed at her only?” If I say there’s child poverty in my country, it does not mean I think it’s a good idea, it’s just a fact.

I also don’t understand why they read it. Lots of people don’t read the Mail (or the Sun, or the Express), surely they don’t need to either. I think following them and taking photos when they’re not at work needs to be curtailed (I don’t need to see a photo of Kate coming out of Waterstones), but reporting on them taking private jets hither and yon ... that seems valid.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/04/2020 17:55

Beatrice has cancelled her wedding

Hang on, is that cancelled or just postponed?

Only the first one sounds a bit ... err ... permanent

miri1985 · 28/04/2020 18:03

I lived in the US for a while and was initially charmed by the friendliness shown from the outset. I can see how Meghan might have been taken aback at the differences here.

I can't remember where I heard it but I remember someone commenting on the difference between the US and UK that you could be introduced to someone in the US and ask them the phrase "whats your story?" and get a detailed biography whereas if you did the same in the UK you'd just get a side eye.

CallmeAngelina · 28/04/2020 18:25

miri, that may be fuelling the irritation many Brits feel when reading some of the things they're releasing, with so many "woke" phrases.
It's all a bit "knot-your-own-yoghurt."

CallmeAngelina · 28/04/2020 18:26

FFS, KNIT your own yoghurt!

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 28/04/2020 18:37

knot your own yoghurt works too Grin

I am fascinated by Omid Scobie but never heard of Carolyn Durand before.

MissHoskins · 28/04/2020 18:38

Angelina, I used to use knit your own knickers type, obviously from a yak that lives high up in the mountains of Machu Picchu and eats rarified erbs and only drinks crystal clear mountain spring water.
I know the type.

I wouldn't even know what they meant if someone asked me that Confused

Do you mean it's a cultural difference? If so, I don't think that's it. Their word salads are irritating to Americans, too.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/04/2020 19:41

I am fascinated by Omid Scobie

Quite - but what I'm really fascinated by is who the hell he is??
Any google result just brings up blogger/correspondent, etc, but not any actual background and I'm starting to wonder if he's not just some computer-generated geek

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 28/04/2020 19:44

It isn't that she's American, it's that she's Californian, and an actress. It's a heady cocktail.

Ritascornershop · 28/04/2020 19:47

And there’s not one monolithic American culture either. I’m hardly an expert, but living America-adjacent as I do, I’m guessing an unemployed person in Flint, or someone deep in the Apalachians, or an old money type from Massachusetts, or someone from Gary, Indiana, or Bedford-Stuy, or a farming community in Iowa etc etc would be underwhelmed with the whole thing. It’s a very small group of So-Cal kind of mindset.

Cinderella66 · 28/04/2020 19:50

I had sympathy for them but now they are just vile hypocrites with Harry shirking his duty.

Packingsoapandwater · 28/04/2020 20:08

I think it's worth saying that women who find themselves in the public eye by virtue of dating or being married to a public figure, and dare to comment about things themselves, have a rough time.

I mean, do people remember the frankly vicious coverage of Cherie Blair back in the day? Journalists wrote books about how bonkers she was with her crystals and the such like, as though she were some sort of "leylines power the energy of Gaia" Saturday mystic.

It even happens to people who have never been connected to state or political power: JK Rowling had people camped in a field with long range lenses outside her home.

To suggest MM has somehow had it worse is really bizarre.

Wheresthebeach · 28/04/2020 20:16

Cherie Blair is a really good example...

MissEliza · 28/04/2020 20:37

I'm not sure about Cherie Blair being a good example. I know someone who worked with her and said she lived up to her public image.

MrsJoshNavidi · 28/04/2020 20:46

I have just googled Omid Scobie, and you're right. There's no info on him at all.
I'm now trying to figure out if Omid Scobie is an anagram off something pertinent - does he even exist, or is he computer generated??

MoreHippoThanPenguin · 28/04/2020 20:49

A computer generated journalist... like your thinking MrsJosh

Mummyoflittledragon · 28/04/2020 21:01

He’s been on Twitter since 2008. He’s a regular on Good Morning America. I’ve had a brief watch of the video when he reported on H&M stepping back. Can’t add as I’m on the old iPad and it’s playing up. Seems pretty real to me despite looking like he has had some kind of cosmetic surgery and maybe Botox.

StartupRepair · 28/04/2020 22:08

I think he has fawned over H and M pretty consistently.

Oldbutstillgotit · 28/04/2020 23:06

@ Packingsoapandwater JK Rowling was subject to a barrage of abuse during the 2014 referendum. Makes the alleged criticism of MM pale into insignificance.

thecatsthecats · 29/04/2020 07:43

@MissEliza

To be honest, it hardly matters whether most stories are true or not, in this sense. The relevant factor is the intense critical interest and commentary on someone purely because of who they're married to - which seems to exclusively happen to women.

(A story about Cherie and her dodgy flat purchases - fine, in the public interests. But who cares if she likes magic crystals?)

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 29/04/2020 12:50

Cambridges' 9th wedding anniversary today.

I wonder what the news from LA could possibly be?

Nikhedonia · 29/04/2020 12:52

MM is pregnant?
