I think it's a bit ironic to say Meghan didn't want to play second fiddle to Kate. The whole concept of royalty is built on a nonsense. Rather dim boring Harry is some kind of celeb superstar because he's a royal.

thisenglishlife · 02/05/2020 23:18

Megan is obviously mixed race to anyone who has met any mixed race people.

I agree that he could have made a mistake, but had been in the news constantly for two and a half years before giving birth.

Dandyish · 02/05/2020 23:26

That’s what’s so odd, Danny Baker is South-East London born and raised from a working-class family, who’s worked in the media since the 2990s if not 1980s. However I doubt he met MM and from photos it can be hard to tell. She did used to describe herself as “Caucasian” on her CV apparently and I’ve heard her say in at least one TV interviews that she could and would be considered for playing “white” women.

I agree that he could have made a mistake, but had been in the news constantly for two and a half years before giving birth.

Well yes quite. And as I said, he did popular culture broadcasting, not the shipping forecast. No excuses.

Dandyish · 02/05/2020 23:27

That should be 1990s not 2990s obviously Grin

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 02/05/2020 23:28

No there are no excuses for DB, part of his broadcasting job was to be in the know about who's who etc. I do find it hard to understand, given his background, and he's clearly an intelligent man.

Tezza1 · 03/05/2020 02:26

Roussette Is "Normal People" based on the Sally Rooney book of the same name?

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 03/05/2020 05:04

DB was definitely broadcasting in the 1980s, in fact was probably at his most famous then, certainly in London.

I think the photo was a crass and thoughtless blunder. I am sure he did know that MM was biracial, I just think he didn't make the connection. Then when he did, realised that admitting it might have massive legal implications for him.

He should have apologised unreservedly but instead went into full Clarkson mode. That was his mistake.

Roussette · 03/05/2020 07:50

@Tezza1
Yes it is.
And very well done by all accounts. I can't say because I haven't read the book

Roussette · 03/05/2020 08:09

When I heard DB say he didn't realise MM was mixed race, I could not believe it. He is a broadcaster/journalist and it is his business to know these things and I find it hard to believe.

However, maybe just maybe, he didn't join the dots and think things through and that is also inexcusable given he has an audience out there. I do sometimes wonder what these famous people are on when they do something stupid... that they don't just think... 'I wonder how this will look'.
And yes, before anyone says, which you no doubt will, that includes Harry and the fancy dress. (Although he was a lot younger than DB who has years of experience in the industry as a voice out there and has been fired countless times before)

And absolutely, DB's reaction to being called out was diabolical.

CanIHaveAPenguinPlease · 03/05/2020 08:20

I couldn’t agree more. He absolutely deserved sacking. It was his job. He should have known & then owned the gross error & not deflect.

When I see photos of Meghan I’m not surprised Harry fell for her. She’s beautiful, not to be rude about him, but he’s definitely the one punching!

Samcro · 03/05/2020 08:23

it reminds me of that awful gervais bloke. he used a disablist slur and the instead of apologising tried to defend himself.

ToastedHaMSandwich · 03/05/2020 08:45

I couldn’t care less about why they wanted to step away. Or that HMQ persuaded H to stay within RF when he left the army. And if that is the case why didn’t they take up HMQ offer of no title and less public engagement.

It’s the way it was done. The tone of announcements since. The never ending PR pap and now the book all constantly referencing them as still royals. Their privileged lifestyle. The moaning. The whinging.

Just leave. Get on with your lives and shut up is my opinion.

BarleylemonPenguin · 03/05/2020 09:01

I was just about to say this with reference to HaM. Baby shower, Wimbledon, alienation of whole nation by alluding to them being racist/toxic - even if the public figures themselves see absolutely nothing wrong with these 'optics', it looks like it would be prudent for them all to at least run their proposed actions/words past an advisor in order to see if they can spot things that they themselves might not be able to. A lot rides on getting it right.

Roussette · 03/05/2020 09:23

I was just about to say this with reference to HaM

What a coincidence!

And I wasn't thinking of them when I typed that. I was thinking of other celebs doing ridiculous things that without fail would look bad to the public.

Tezza1 · 03/05/2020 09:35

@Roussette I hated the book. For some reason, Rooney doesn't use quotation marks. I find that unbelievably irritating as I then hear, in my head, every character's voice as a flat monotone. I'm inflexible, I suppose.

BarleylemonPenguin · 03/05/2020 09:42

All public figures need advisors/mentors - "Two heads are better than one" type of thing. I am not sure why some don't have them. The results can be catastrophic, both for them and for us, the public/taxpayers.

Roussette · 03/05/2020 09:57

Tezza Maybe I won't rush to read it! But loved the adaptation. Smile

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 03/05/2020 10:08

Yes the adaptation is wonderful. Unusually it kept my attention, as my concentration span is very short at the moment. I keep thinking about it.

It probably sounds ridiculous but it made me realise things about myself that I hadn't understood. Can't pay it a higher compliment.

Roussette · 03/05/2020 10:34

I know exactly what you mean. Such complex characters for the two main leads. A really thoughtful adaptation.

And I loved how respectful the initial sex scene was... just like it should be

Sorry to hijack thread everyone!

Samcro · 03/05/2020 10:37

got to comment on Kate doing that video call to someone who had just had a baby. The new mum was so brave. imagine a perfectly preened person calling you on face time when you have just given birth + my worst nightmare.
can anyone explain the point of it please? I could almost understand if it had been private.

Cerseirys · 03/05/2020 10:43

They need to stay relevant and prove they're still working I suppose.

mrscampbellblackagain · 03/05/2020 10:45

Assume the mother was up for it - some people really do adore the royals and love meeting them.

I don't get it personally.

They all seem to be doing these calls with people and releasing them.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 03/05/2020 10:46

I think Kate had been at that maternity unit before lockdown quite a bit. I'm sure I remember reading that. Not work experience 😂 but doing something similar.

I don't know, maybe a morale boost?? I'm not going to knock because I don't know plus I like Kate too.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 03/05/2020 10:48

Although can you imagine it it had been Meghan doing it??? She would be slated.

mrscampbellblackagain · 03/05/2020 10:54

Meghan did a smartwork call didn't she the other day? Again, not sure of the point but presumably it meant a lot to the woman she spoke too.
