I know M and K were supposed to have a spat and dress fitting

It's interesting how that story went from "Kate in tears at Charlotte's bridesmaid dress fitting" (newly post-partum woman welling up when she sees her little girl in a new dress?) to "Meghan made Kate cry at Charlotte's bridesmaid dress fitting". The Palace actually responded to that and said it never happened but by then the evil Meghan narrative was out there and believed by many.

I thought it was very misogynistic how the press made it all about Kate vs Meghan when on the occasions they were seen together, Wimbledon for example, they seemed to get on fine. I'm not best friends with my SiLs but we are friendly enough when we meet, so I don't know why the press expected K&M to become bosom buddies.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 02/05/2020 08:41

Yes I think the William and Harry relationship is really interesting. I wondered when it had happened too as I thought they looked uncomfortable together at the wedding.

It might not be anything dramatic but more a drip, drip drip of little things. Anyway, I'm nosy enough to want to know.

LittleBearPad · 02/05/2020 08:46

I think they had no choice, personally. I don't think the negative press (the unwarranted stuff) would've stopped, given that it's following them across the Atlantic. But surely it's either easier to ignore over there, or not as much as if they'd been here.

Possibly it would have been 20/30 years ago but the internet means the world’s a lot smaller. And the Daily Mail website is one of the busiest in the world.

Plus Harry, allegedly, reads the comments on articles. So he won’t escape it.

Gettingveryfat · 02/05/2020 08:52

Don’t read the comments! That’s the road to hell.

mrscampbellblackagain · 02/05/2020 08:54

I do think it is really sad that Harry and William who did appear to be so close aren't any more. I would be very upset by that if I were Charles.

However, maybe things will get better over the next few years.

Talking of smoking - I was joking the other day about starting in lockdown as keep seeing that smokers seem less impacted by covid and for the appetite suppressant benefits which I really need at the moment Wink

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 02/05/2020 08:55

God yes. They are awful!!!!

Samcro · 02/05/2020 08:56

i can't imagine Meg and Kate being besties, But they did seem to get on ok. Sil"s dont always gel. I know I am not that close to mine.

CanIHaveAPenguinPlease · 02/05/2020 09:00

It’s the Royal Law that SILs have to get on, dontcha know? But not royal BILs. Just the women. 🤷🏻‍♀️

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 02/05/2020 09:01

I wouldn't know what to ask for anymore. I used to smoke Silk Cut. I used to buy 10 from a van parked outside my school.

EthelMayFergus · 02/05/2020 09:25

I haven't heard of a rift between K and M, just the two brothers. They obviously weren't best friends but every picture or comment I've seen about them suggested they got on fine. I always thought that Harry and Kate had a close friendship too, it seems a shame that he's lost that.

Samcro · 02/05/2020 09:52

or she lost that.

with my Miss Marple hat on, I think W & H fell out. K will have stood by W come what may(as you do) and a rift will have happened. because of timing M will be blamed.
I imagine it has always been hard for H being 2nd best to W. I always think that is why W had 3 children so it didn't happen to his.

CallmeAngelina · 02/05/2020 10:37

But there were certainly reports that as children, William was jealous that Harry would escape the shackles of having to be king. He would have a freer life.

Roussette · 02/05/2020 10:47

I think a SIL relationship can be a tricky one.

I have one SIL who could not be more unlike me in every way anyone could imagine. We are poles apart. But I make an effort because of my brother. Sometimes she irritates the hell out of me, and I'm sure I do likewise with her, but I just ignore her very peculiar idiosyncrasies. Because my brother is as happy as a pig in shit with her.

I have no idea why K&M fell out, but it's a shame for the sake of the brothers, they couldn't get on. We know how rifts deepen as time goes on. I did feel K was icily cold at the commemoration church service, shame she just couldn't have smiled at M despite the awkward situation.

LittleBearPad · 02/05/2020 10:49

Maybe Kate was thoroughly sick of them both. She’d have good reason to be - particularly as everything will now rest on her family. They couldn’t even attend the commonwealth service without throwing their toys around about who was walking in and not.

CallmeAngelina · 02/05/2020 10:53

I wouldn't have smiled at them either! If I were Kate, I would be fucking furious with them.
Although no, she wasn't grinning like a Cheshire Cat all the way through the event, as Meghan was. But that's surely a good thing.

Samcro · 02/05/2020 11:00

it could be either way M might have found K insufferable. or visa versa.
I don't get why Kate would be furious with them.
of course everything will rest on her family, W is in line for the throne. as are her children.
H is now something like 6th in line. so he is not even senior(if he stayed)

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 02/05/2020 11:02

I understand your perspective, Roussette.

Like you, DH and I are from very different places and backgrounds. We met in a university town far away from home, free from history and baggage. Without doubt our biggest challenges were when our two very different worlds collided. The strength of our relationship was severely tested. I think many in the same position might not have survived.

H&M were living on different continents, their relationship apparently developed through brief but intense rendezvous. That's where my holiday romance comparison comes from.

MM had a baptism of fire being introduced into royal life but by then they were already engaged. With all the wedding drama, and then pregnancy and childbirth, I think the first opportunity she had to consider what she had got herself into was well after the horse had bolted. I think if H were not a Prince, she would have been long gone, and that's not a criticism, some relationships aren't meant to last.

ArriettyJones · 02/05/2020 11:05

Or entirely mutual?

I think more generally, the RF have a dislike of “leakers”. Diana made herself unpopular with the family for the same reason. Naturally, a jibbing actress from California has an entirely different attitude to whipping up positive press coverage, talking to journalists etc. So in many ways a clash of cultures in completely inevitable and always was.

Roussette · 02/05/2020 11:05

Whether she was or she wasn't, in the long run do you just cut off your husband's brother and his wife? I'm a bit more live and let live TBH.

I know nothing of throwing toys around, that's assumption quite possibly.

Disagree with both the last two posts. If I'm nervous, I'm positively gurning, because my nerves make me over compensate. And you saying she was grinning like a Cheshire cat just sums up the difference between those of us that try and look at people in a positive light and those that don't.
Firstly, she was not grinning all the way through the event, that's bollocks and you know it. And that's what those that dislike them do, they say stuff that is just not true.

Secondly, it could well be nerves and over compensation, like it or not.

ArriettyJones · 02/05/2020 11:06

Jobbing not jibbing. My autocorrect seems to be having a nervous breakdown this week. 😏

ArriettyJones · 02/05/2020 11:08

That makes a lot of sense.

Samcro · 02/05/2020 11:08

some people smile when they see a camera. me I don't, but my SIL does. she just does it. doesn't plan it, (blood glamorous as well. and my fave SIL)
I really think its just normal for some people.

Oh, you must watch 'Normal People', that paragraph makes you sound like the main lead in it. Really really! BBC3 now or on iPlayer. It is beautiful and so much like what you have written

Where has this view that M was leaking stuff while working come from?

Isn't it accepted fact that H and M were pushed into announcing their departure because of leaks from BP. Lots of fingers pointed to the close links between William and Kate's office and Dan Wootton who basically tried to blackmail them. Also a lot of the damaging stories were fuelled by or ignored by the same BP that felt the need to issue a v strongly worded statement on the rumours that Kate may have had botox.

Also, there has been press corroboration of stories that Charles and his office leaked and briefed against his children as part of the campaign to rehabilitate Camilla.

Samcro · 02/05/2020 11:42

doesn't it all go back to them throwing H&M under the bus?
