For men in Kakuma, their positions as household breadwinners were undermined by the independence given to women as part of the program. For example, by providing women with their own ration cards, men were no longer relied upon to access food resources (Grabska, 2011, p.89). Emasculation as a result of disrupted gender norms led to increasing cases of domestic abuse in the camp, exacerbating women’s vulnerability to violence (Grabska, 2011, p.87).
I understand that you are proof reading, but I am v v surprised at these conclusions. Does it really suggest that the men would not have been violent if they had retained sole access to resources?
This surprises me mightily. I would have thought that abusers abuse, not just take it up when their power base is undermined. Likewise, I would have hoped that women having direct access to resources would have been less at risk of domestic abuse.
Shall try a google of the references and see how it goes. Apologies for interrupting the thread. A quick google found the original. Thank you very much
As you were.
