I've been proofreading an essay for DD on gender issues relating to refugees.
I was struck by the parallels.
For men in Kakuma, their positions as household breadwinners were undermined by the independence given to women as part of the program. For example, by providing women with their own ration cards, men were no longer relied upon to access food resources (Grabska, 2011, p.89). Emasculation as a result of disrupted gender norms led to increasing cases of domestic abuse in the camp, exacerbating women’s vulnerability to violence (Grabska, 2011, p.87).
Not suggesting H will get violent of course, but being locked away in exile, reliant on his wife will be tricky for him.
