pelican I dont think anyone who is not part of a forces family can understand actually. It's engrained, it's part of the deal, you just don't get to opt out? (I know YOU get it).

I just wrote a long post about being a Navy (submarine) brat, but deleted as seemed irrelevant. But for those lurking, or feeling that any questioning of Meghan in relationship to the forces - please let me say that it MATTERS.

Absolutepowercorrupts · 08/03/2020 23:34

@Sunshineand
Go and find posters that have ben racist about the Duchess of Sussex. Direct your comments to them and not me.

I was confused about the white hair comment above, as my thought was grey/white hair, but now I’m realizing they meant straight hair. But Meghan does straighten her hair so that doesn’t make a ton of sense to me. And it’s only been one dress she’s worn that was a little more LA and a little bit less RF, so the tension about her “changing her whole style to match white women” (paraphrasing) seems OTT to me.

nachthexe · 09/03/2020 00:51

I’m white. Definitely don’t have white hair (yeah it took me a long time too) and nor do I straighten it. But I did wear it regulation-stylee for 16 years in the military. (I can put it up in my sleep given 8 pins - at 45 degrees - and a bun net). I did once wear a red ball gown to a mess event with dh. But on a public occasion when one or the other of us was in uniform and the other was ‘plus one’ we didn’t hand-hold. Ew. No.
I did once attend a function where an unfortunate new plus one wore a copy of that Liz Hurley safety-pin dress . No-one said ‘how brave and fabulous!’ They sucked their teeth and said ‘oh dear, why didn’t he tell her?’ (Although tbf a few of the subbies might have enjoyed the spectacle a little too much).
I reserve the right to suck my teeth.

Barleylemon · 09/03/2020 01:16

Then she shouldn’t have joined the RF.

I agree with this. If she had married anyone else, she could do as she pleases. The RF, however, are nothing if not constrained entirely by ‘processes’ and are completely public-facing (“optics”). If she had married Bezos and blew half a mill on a baby shower, no-one would bat an eyelid. His money, her money. However, she clearly did not understand about accountability to the taxpayer. It’s not Harry’s money. The taxpayers want to see value for their hard-earned money. She married the wrong guy.

Tsukukuviri · 09/03/2020 05:50

Thanks to those who reported the hideous monkey picture post.

I am VERY glad though that it was posted because I hope this goes to confirm that there are many problematic things in this discussion.

And yes, I will challenge the personal nastiness as well as the incipient racism of some posters.

I will also challenge poor logic, spite and hypocrisy.

It is perfectly possible to talk about more than one thing!

CanIHaveATiaraPlease · 09/03/2020 06:11

I’m white - olive skinned.

I straighten my hair as do most of my family. We have the vile Greek frizzball hair that goes wild as soon as rain or humidity hit. I don’t want to spend good money paying for a blow dry for it to be ruined in less than 2 minutes. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with MM or anyone else who wants to straighten/curl their hair.

PelicanPie · 09/03/2020 06:23

I don’t even know where this hair straightening argument started or why white hair is supposedly considered de rigeur (that’s a new one on me).

I don’t think anyone cares if she straightens her hair or what colour it is.

However it is indisputably true that certain dress or behaviour is expected in particular circumstances. Everyone knows that if they have half a brain. To argue otherwise is just ignorant.
Harry could I suppose decide not to wear his uniform at military events and come in jeans. He may feel more comfortable in jeans. However it would be disrespectful to do so. Anyway, those days are well and truly over now.

Today will bring some new discussion, so let’s move on shall we?

I enjoyed your anecdote and it illustrates the point about dress well.

TheNavigator · 09/03/2020 06:27

Meghan is a beautiful woman who dresses well. Some posters are pulling apart her clothes as part of a general cricitism of her appearance (straightened hair, white teeth, smile, padded bum FFS) as they obviously dislike everything about her. Style is a matter of personal taste however there is plaining nothing objectively wrong with how Meghan dresses, it is just petty bitching (like 90% of this woeful thread).

PelicanPie · 09/03/2020 06:36

But there is a lot wrong with her sense of entitlement.

OP posts:
CanIHaveATiaraPlease · 09/03/2020 06:41

Not just her sense of entitlement Pelican

It’s Harry’s sense of entitlement that bothers me more tbh. He’s grown up in the RF. He knows what is expected & that at the end of the day it’s us the tax payer that picks up the tab.

So I think, we the tax payer, have every right to question their decisions & the actions that lead from those decisions.

PelicanPie · 09/03/2020 06:44

Yes, agreed.

What an amazing leaving !!!
Both looked gorgeous , school had a riot , Brilliant.

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 09/03/2020 07:15

Some posters live to troll this thread they keep saying they disapprove of. They have been doing so for months now. Very strange.

I never post on the unicorns and fairies 'everything is so delightful' thread. Why? I do not agree with the sentiments of the discussion. But crucially here is the difference: I accept those people have a right to discuss it as they want. So why would I try to stir trouble and get it pulled every single time? Am I a self appointed thread police?

I'm starting to understand why some mumsnetters use Reddit. Presumably they are allowed to discuss subjects like adults. And (here's the shocker) not be nice all the time. Like women it seems are required to be.

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 09/03/2020 07:28

What an amazing leaving

It has been executed with style. Has to be the most stylish 'sods you' ever.

Encyclo · 09/03/2020 07:32

Seeing in the news this morning that Harry and Meghan will set up a charity to help injured armed forces veterans and those who are experiencing homeless.

I can see that being a cause close the Harry's heart.

TimeLady · 09/03/2020 07:33

When you are on duty representing HMQ, ie in business mode, you obey the dress rules she sets, surely? If that means she wants you to wear a hat or tights, you wear a hat or tights. No different to barristers wearing those unflattering wigs in court or soldiers parading in bearskin hats. It goes with the job. These rules may change when a new CEO, ie Charles, takes over, but until then you put up and shut up. Turning up barelegged when you know she would disapprove would be petty and disrespectful.

PelicanPie · 09/03/2020 07:36

It’s a great cause to support but I can’t see how it will support them financially. They need to get proper work for themselves. Harry could fly helicopters. I’m sure Canada have a search and rescue team. Meghan could train a Drama teacher . She seems to be good with school kids. 😁
