Here's a follow on to the last thread, which was really enjoyable.

@MangoFeverDream

On March 22, 2019, The Sun published gossip that Kate Middleton had "banished" Rose Hanbury from her social circle, and William was trying to broker a truce.

On March 24, The Daily Mail published a story suggesting the rumours are false, and that Kate Middleton and Rose Hanbury were not close friends.

On March 26, Giles Coren tweeted that "it is an affair". AFAIK, that's the first time an allegation of an affair was stated directly.

The tweet, posted at 9:41 a.m., was soon deleted.

It's been alleged William threatened legal action.

Hope everyone is staying safe and feeling calm. In a world with no public gatherings, h and m's only outlet will be social media. Stand by for some inspiration memes.

I for one cannot wait for the wisdom gems to be kind, follow my heart and that everything is possible. Wink

SORRY rita I'm sure it's a lovely place!

Winterlife · 15/03/2020 19:35

@RubyViolet, thanks for the link. That was an interesting read.

RosesandIris · 15/03/2020 19:49

Ruby

Great article.

MangoFeverDream · 15/03/2020 19:53

My mistake. Still the reporting came first, not the tweets. British media was very oblique, but the US tabloids ran with it because their libel laws are lax.

The DM has reported on the Turnip Toffs before this, initially the stories were boring and kind of weird, but then you read them with the knowledge there was likely an affair going on. This article from 2016 has this odd thing:

Rose is trim, too, but has more of a bombshell figure and worked as a some-time model at Kate Moss’s old agency, Storm. You can see why they signed her up — slim as a reed, big brown eyes and a generous cleavage that rather puts athletic-looking Kate in the shade.

BelleharePenguin09 · 15/03/2020 19:55

Rose looks a bit glaikit. Kate never does.

Winterlife · 15/03/2020 20:00

@MangoFeverDream US publications didn't print the story until long after Giles Coren's tweet, most in June, I believe.

Winterlife · 15/03/2020 20:01

Correction - I believe TMZ reported on the rumour at the end of April 2019.

PenguinOrHippo · 15/03/2020 20:07

How are you feeling tonight CanIHaveAPenguinPlease ? Big Wine for you.

CanIHaveAPenguinPlease · 15/03/2020 20:14

Thank you everyone Wine. I will try & contact my rheumatology nurse this week for advice I think but ok so far thank you. It’s a difficult decision as I’ve read the lack of meds may cause a flare which also then means you are liable to infection Sad so I’m a bit confused as to what to do for the best really. Hey ho these threads will keep me occupied Grin

That was a great read Ruby thank you.

Oldbutstillgotit · 15/03/2020 20:32

Apparently HM has invited the Sussexes to Balmoral in the summer . I really cannot see M enjoying it there . Diana hates it .

Oldbutstillgotit · 15/03/2020 20:32
  • hated . Obviously.
derxa · 15/03/2020 20:37

Rose looks a bit glaikit Grin

MissEliza · 15/03/2020 20:39

Glaikit! Another priceless and irreplaceable Scottish word.

AlexaAmbidextra · 15/03/2020 20:48

If William had indeed had an affair with Rose, why would he have tried to engineer a rapprochement between the two women? Hardly the act of a two-timing husband I’d have thought.

DandyPenguin · 15/03/2020 20:54

My mistake. Still the reporting came first, not the tweets.

Bit of a big mistake @MangoFeverDream !You rightly mentioned fake news before so you understand the importance of getting these things right.

The newspapers here may have written something that could, if read in a certain way, imply that W had an affair. But contrary to what you wrote, they categorically did not report that he did. Huuuuuge difference.

Yes once those reports about the falling out between Kate and Rose had been published, then the tweets came speculating on the reason for the falling out. I saw a screenshot of Giles's tweet close to the time. Because he is a well-known Times reporter it was very bad form for him to do that, because his job means people may see him as reporting the news when in fact he was tweeting in a personality capacity.

As he has form for trolling on twitter - proven form - there's only so much I'm prepared to believe him.

Overall personally I would be prepared to believe there is some truth in the rumour but there's been no obvious evidence yet. For you to write as if it's been reported as fact is unfair.

ButteryPuffin · 15/03/2020 21:13

That's a canny move from the Queen. Given the reports from friends of the Sussexes about their love for outdoor life, constant countryside dog walking and all in Canada, it's hard to give a good excuse why they couldn't visit and do some of that in Scotland. Unless then there's an urgent voiceover to be recorded.

Harking back to an earlier point. Catherine Bennett's piece only focuses on the women. Nice bit of misogyny right there. Harry and William both looked frosty and or grumpy but not a word of criticism for them.

DandyPenguin · 15/03/2020 21:27

One more thing @MangoFeverDream

I've just read that Daily Mail piece from 2016 on the Turnip Toffs that you quoted. Thank you for posting that - it demonstrates that anyone claiming the paper treats Kate like a saint and only tears down Meghan is quite wrong.

That piece does a bit of a hatchet job on her looks and job history and nastily compares her rather unfavourably to her former friend.

diddl · 15/03/2020 21:31

But isn't it an open invitation to Balmoral?

Why would HM specifically invite H&M.

"Rose looks a bit glaikit"

How nasty.

DandyPenguin · 15/03/2020 21:37

I swear I read about them going to Balmoral earlier this week on an American news site.

My understanding from what I read seemed to be that it was coming from Meghan's friends, and was in response to criticism that they didn't bring Archie on the past trip.

That ties in with what diddl says. It's an open, standing invitation to all the family and a tradition for the family, albeit not HaM so far.

I suspect that this is a bit of PR spin from camp HaM even though there's a basis of truth there.

Ritascornershop · 15/03/2020 21:51

That’s okay Ruby and Yolo. It is lovely (scenery), but I’m sure they are bored - I’d get bored out there in Brentwood with no friends locally and unable to pop into town as people might stare (at them, not me obviously). I think it’s odd they’re here! It’s just the bit about there being one road (which has come up on previous threads). We have lots of roads on the Island, a temperate climate (on the south coast), a Prime Minister not a president, and socialised healthcare. I think that’s covered it for the moment!

MangoFeverDream · 15/03/2020 21:54

Bit of a big mistake @MangoFeverDream !You rightly mentioned fake news before so you understand the importance of getting these things right

Not really, the tabloids did print the story a week ahead and the tweets didn’t start the rumours as a PP claimed. I was thinking more of a month lead time. I think it’s churlish to suggest Meghan is somehow behind this; it’s been a story quietly brewing as the 2016 article is now interesting in light of the allegations.

I've just read that Daily Mail piece from 2016 on the Turnip Toffs that you quoted. Thank you for posting that - it demonstrates that anyone claiming the paper treats Kate like a saint and only tears down Meghan is quite wrong

You’re welcome. The tabloids do love to bolster then tear down their celebs. Well, it sells doesn’t it?

The difference is that tabloid reporters still have to keep on the royals good side so they have to balance things to keep access. Now that HM have made themselves irrelevant, I expect all sorts of damaging things to come out about them. Who would care about maintaining access to them anymore? It’s harsh but .....

DandyPenguin · 15/03/2020 22:11

Not really, the tabloids did print the story a week ahead and the tweets didn’t start the rumours as a PP claimed.

But that wasn't what I was correcting.

You said the papers printed news of the affair.
They did not.
They printed a story about their being a rift between Kate and Rose but did not say why. In fact they may even have specified they didn't know why.

It was the tweets that said the cause of the rift. The papers did not. You were wrong to say they were.
