I hope I've got what everyone wants in the title of this, the twelfth thread in the series.

That from Berkshire blog article was really interesting. It touched on something I’ve been really confused about - how suddenly there seems to be this narrative that we’ve all always know that Harry has always disliked his role in the Royal Family and has struggled with it for years. I’m not a huge royal watcher but that wasn’t my impression at all before - he seemed to grow into it over the years and genuinely enjoy and find satisfaction in the charity work he did, the Invictus Games, his mental health work with W and K, and his role as the brother who didn’t have the prospective weight of the monarchy on his shoulders. Something is (well, many things are) “off”.

Telegraph nailed it for me. Really recommend this read.

Heavens, OVienna - no cat will accept that DRY FOOD is the same.

You'd think ours were starving sometimes, the way they carry on. Then they are given dry food and walk away.

So not so hungry after all......

William was right in telling Harry not to rush things. Can you imagine PW marrying someone from a family he'd never met? I just don't get what went through PH's mind to have a long distance relationship with someone for about a year before proposing. I could understand a shorter relationship where you see each other all the time but visiting MM in another country every couple of weeks?

I would have thought in his position it would be a pre-requisite to get to know her family. Things would have turned out so differently if only he'd done this (whether for the better or not, I don't know).

He's in his 30s, not prepared to listen to his brother nor to his advisors. I'm coming to the conclusion this is all on him. I'm sure he wouldn't listen to PC. I think I'm going off PH. I wouldn't want him marrying a daughter of mine.

ajandjjmum · 23/01/2020 11:32

That's true Jilly. I seem to remember that when Harry was told that he wouldn't be allowed to return to the front line, he resigned from the Army in a fit of pique. He then was lost for purpose for a while, until he founded Invictus and focused on other charities (Sentebale and MH), at which point he got things together.

Then along came Meghan.......

I do think she is embarrassed by her family and the impression they give. Totally contrary to the impression she gave in the 2015 speech and various Tig and Insta posts - but they would never have been examined in detail until Harry came on the scene, so she could embellish the truth without fear of correction.

OVienna · 23/01/2020 11:33

And yes it is inexcusable there are wrong dates in the programme.

Wheresthebeach · 23/01/2020 11:34

I agree @Jillyhilly it does seem that the narrative has changed dramatically. I'm sure they all long for a 'normal' life at some stage, that would be expected.

I've not seen the TM interview just seen some excerpts, but the whole situation is a train crash. I'm surprised MM hasn't dropped the court case, surely they must now?
TM seems to go between being sad v being entitled - 'Harry owes me' etc. His description of Harry is interesting, and very unflattering. If even partially true then it looks like H & M are feeding off each others worst traits.

TheMustressMhor · 23/01/2020 11:40

I think that Meghan will not drop the court case because she cannot countenance not being in the spotlight over it.

And also - she does not think that she will lose.

And also - she does not think that any revelations which will undoubtedly come to light, and which may damage the Crown and embarrass the Queen, are of any importance.

Sounds like Oprah is supporting H&M after all (from the Daily Mail):

Oprah, 66, who has grown close with both Prince Harry, 35, and Meghan Markle, 38, over the past few years, defended the couple after being stopped by reporters while walking with Gayle, 65, in New York last night.

In a video published by TMZ, Oprah said that she supported the Sussexes '1,000 per cent' in their decision to step back from the royal family, adding that she believes Prince Harry 'did what he needed to do for his family.'

She explained: 'I don't think anybody else has any right to say anything, when a person has sat and thought about what is the best decision for him and his family, and then he makes that decision... none of us have any right to say anything about that.'

Wheresthebeach · 23/01/2020 11:42

Huh...@TheMustressMhor - you're right...I was failing to factor in the level of delusion needed to continue. Of course she can't lose. Should be interesting...

JulietJanuary · 23/01/2020 11:47

GracefulHippo I take your point on families.

And social media curations versus messy reality!

You can deplore the actions of this couple WHILE feeling sorry for them, I think.
Especially someone joining the UK Royal family (who we all know live in a very abnormal world really.) Watching video of her in public with the Queen and on some public engagements the Duchess looked rather lost.

You would have to really be a brave, independent woman to feel confident in bringing your "embarrassing" Dad along for the ride. And not just good at the trite speeches!

I think the Queen spoke right in her statement.

Meghan's father, Tom Markle, won $750,000 in the California State Lottery in 1990, according to an an excerpt from the book published in The Sunday Times.
Though he has since declared bankruptcy, Markle used his lottery winnings at the time to pay tuition to his daughter's private school.

A new book about Prince Harry's fiancée — "Meghan: A Hollywood Princess" — includes details about the actor's life and childhood. Princess Diana's controversial biographer, Andrew Morton, wrote the in-depth biography about Markle, which will be published April 12.

Included in the book and detailed in an excerpt published in The Sunday Times, is a story of how Meghan's father, Tom Markle, won the lottery when she was a child — and subsequently lost the money.

The elder Markle was known as a frequent purchaser of lottery tickets who spent thousands of dollars pressing his luck, according to Morton. He won the California State Lottery in 1990, "scooping $750,000 with five numbers, which included Meghan’s birth date," Morton wrote. Meghan was born on August 4, 1981.

With inflation, Markle's winnings would be worth about $1.5 million in 2018. Unfortunately, he eventually wound up filing for bankruptcy.

Tom Markle was a successful Hollywood lighting designer and was serving as the lighting director on the long running soap opera "General Hospital" when he met a makeup artist in training, Doria Ragland. Ragland became Markle's second wife and Meghan's mother, but the couple was already divorced by the time he won the lottery.

To avoid further financial difficulties from his divorce with Ragland, Markle sent a friend to pick up his lottery winnings from Chicago, according to The Times. Meghan's half-brother, Tom Jr., said that his father lost the bulk of the lottery prize when the same friend convinced him to invest a portion of his winnings into a jewelry business that later failed.

Markle didn't lose all of his money from his friend's scam, however. He gave Tom Jr. money to start a flower shop, bought a car for his daughter Yvonne, and paid Meghan's tuition at a Catholic school with his winnings.

"If Meg marries Harry she’ll have won the lottery of life but dad winning the lottery helped us all," Tom Jr. told the Mail. "That money allowed Meg to go to the best schools and get the best training."

In 2016, Tom Sr. declared bankruptcy over $30,000.

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 23/01/2020 11:55

Paranoia about people being out to get him, cutting deals to get money, only interested in money. The apple really didn’t fall far from that tree.
I don't know that I'd want to open a hand-written envelope addressed to:
Thomas Markle
Meghan Markle's dad
Somewhere in Mexico.

It looked like a jiffy bag envelope to me. The writing was not neatly-addressed. It was sprawled all over it (and I mean all over it) and, in view of his experiences, I wouldn't want to open it if I was him.

He was right to be concerned. It was from someone with some very weird ideas about Meghan and her pregnancy (you know the mad stuff about her not really being pregnant and surrogacy stuff).

ajandjjmum · 23/01/2020 12:00

That's interesting PinkSun9 - thank you. Very sad that he was made bankrupt over $30,000 whilst she was earning decent money on Suits - but none of us know the story behind this.

Although I'm sure he's not a wicked man, he does seem to have made some bad decisions. Assuming Morton's book is correct.

TheMustressMhor · 23/01/2020 12:01

I've always wondered about the mentality of those who believed that MM and PH had hired a surrogate in order to produce a baby.

Once Archie was born, those same people immediately averred that he was a doll.

Well, you can't have it both ways.

Surrogates do not give birth to dolls.

OP posts:
JulietJanuary · 23/01/2020 12:01

Oprah had a tough upbringing and has built her own "family."

TheMustressMhor · 23/01/2020 12:03

And I recall that in one of the earliest of these threads, someone came along who mooted the "doll" theory - and was miffed because nobody wanted to discuss it seriously.

I read that but even they got things wrong. Channel 5 write in the documentary that they interviewed TM over 6 days. The Telegraph says it was 3. It may seem like a small point but if they weren't watching closely enough to notice that, then they may have not been watching closely enough to pick up more relevant and nuanced stuff. Just my opinion.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 23/01/2020 12:08

Hello all! I have a sore throat and am craving chocolate this morning but have none in the cupboard so I'm barely survivingSad

Those who have survived a narc, see through the shenanigans, and those who haven’t are struggling to ascribe a narrative, because it’s really impossible to put your finger onto what’s going on unless you’ve earned your stripes with a narc. and then the patterns are really clear.

I totally agree with this @FlickingVees and it does imo opinion explain the divide over what seem like ridiculous petty things to some people, like the partially unbuttoned coat and the literally walking around with hand clasped to baby bump. Some people look at it and see extreme attention seeking and someone who is attempting to communicate in a non-verbal way constantly. Someone else sees nothing untoward. Maybe they even see it as sweet.

Whereas If it was someone I knew irl behaving that way I'd be keeping my distance based on experience

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 23/01/2020 12:11

He had no money to pay for MM's University education. He paid only for her school education. MM paid for her own Uni education

So MM wasn’t lying when she made that speech in Tonga about a Girls education.

Thing is about Meghan, she did do some really good things when in the RF. The Grenfell cookbook, the Smartworks initiative.
She was in just too much of a rush to make her own money.

I still however think she targeted Harry and was set up with him at her own request. I just hope she does actually love him, rather than the idea of him.

JulietJanuary · 23/01/2020 12:12

The internet age is like the pamphleteering age spawned by printing. All sorts of mad rumours circulating.
And any anomaly is seized upon.

I had a look at Omid Scobie's Twitter followers. They are very devoted to their cause.

diddl · 23/01/2020 12:12

" 'I don't think anybody else has any right to say anything, when a person has sat and thought about what is the best decision for him and his family, and then he makes that decision... none of us have any right to say anything about that.'"

Well it's fine when they are going to stand on their own feet & not be wanting to palm some of their costs of living onto others!

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 23/01/2020 12:12

Have to say I disagree with the Telegraphs take this time. I am overall sympathetic to TM although I'm not convinced for one second he's a nice, fluffy old grand dad and agree he likely has another side.

There's just no excuse for Harry not meeting him.

I wonder what the Queen thought about that and how this explained to her?

ajandjjmum · 23/01/2020 12:17

I suspect that Meghan discouraged it, because she was embarrassed. I think that was probably why Doria and Thomas were scheduled to fly over a couple of days before the wedding, and probably out straight afterwards. Just my thoughts.
