So the saga continues
Thé Canadians are not happy about paying for the Sussexes security

I think that will be their downfall. They can’t actually fund the cost of their «freedom»
Other security experts saying that the cost of 24/7 private security is about £4million per year.

Problem is; they have skipped the a Royal fold, and have to pay the real cost of their security and accommodation . They will have to sell every aspect of their Lives to fund this.

I'm glad the statement from the Queen specifies that they will spend time in "Canada" (the couple said it's "North America") and the UK. I think this is an important point.

DarkOceanWater · 14/01/2020 10:17

The celeb freebies will dry up
No doubt about that. The whole appeal of real senior royalty is they it can't be purchased, it is priceless in a way and it feels like some as that fairy dust rubs off on you if you are accepted into its orbit. That's the appeal. Not my cup of tea but to someone (like Elton) who can purchase pretty much anything it's the next level. Once it's for sale, once you can see the price tag the magic has gone. I imagine Meghan realises this but I think it will come as a huge shock to Harry.

diddl · 14/01/2020 10:19

I'm wondering about this "transition period" & why it's necessary tbh.

They have their own millions, are both adults in their 30s,Meghan knows how to live in the real world as far as holding down a job & paying bills goes, so what's it all about?

LizzieSiddal · 14/01/2020 10:20

A chap on BBC breakfast this morning said they will beable to command up to £500,000 per speech. The money given to them from the Queen and P Charles is small fry, they won’t need any money from them.
They’ve also made clear they will pay UK taxes, which means they will bring millions into the country coffers and this may well be a blueprint for future “minor” royals.

Good luck to them!

GlitchStitch · 14/01/2020 10:22

Yes, I know it's Littlejohn and the DM but this article really made me laugh. Also I'm intrigued by the picture part way down with Meghan in the blue dress striding like she's on the catwalk and Harry scurrying behind her with his hand out. He really is her lapdog isn't he.

They’ve also made clear they will pay UK taxes, which means they will bring millions into the country coffers and this may well be a blueprint for future “minor” royals.. hahahaha. They’ve registered their company in Delaware, where they can hide their income. As global individuals they can hide a lot in Switzerland or elsewhere. They couldn’t GAF about bringing millions into the country coffers.

diddl · 14/01/2020 10:31

"A chap on BBC breakfast this morning said they will beable to command up to £500,000 per speech"

But who would pay it?

SunsetBoulevard3 · 14/01/2020 10:34

I can’t quite believe what’s happening really, even though I saw it coming. I just feel so sad for Harry. William looks very sad and depressed. I don’t think he looks angry at all. He must feel he’s lost his brother and his nephew.

Butterymuffin · 14/01/2020 10:34

So 500K a speech is a lot, but how many speeches would they each need to make a year then just to cover security costs? Then everything else, costs of living, non-essential spending? It sounds more lucrative than it actually is.

Nerfballs · 14/01/2020 10:34

Pineappledanish I attended the wedding of friends where one of them only had a sole family member present - mum & dad were both abusive assholes and the wider family all knew but did nothing. None of them were invited except her brother who she is close to. There was some concern over her background to start with but by all accounts they have a very happy and healthy marriage which must've hit the decade mark by now.

I also know of another couple where the bride had no family members present at the wedding - she left the Exclusive Brethren when she was 18 and as cults do her family cut off all contact. This included aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins etc as all are EB which is a pretty common situation around our parts. Again, a long-lasting healthy happy marriage.

So yes, it does happen. And no one knows whether Doria was given the option of plus one, she could have declined it for all we know. We actually know very little about this whole situation really, but would perhaps make really good trash novel writers.

GlitchStitch · 14/01/2020 10:34

Surely the only things of interest that H and M have to speak about is dishing the dirt on the RF and royal life. Who is going to pay 500k to hear them pontificating about the environment or other issues? I think they overestimate their own importance.

SouthWestmom · 14/01/2020 10:35

Why have they called the HS Priti Flamingo?

Butterymuffin · 14/01/2020 10:37

Plus as every freelancer knows, that set up means no work, no pay. There's no one subsiding time off, maternity leave, six weeks in a holiday home. Though I guess that's where Elton and the Russian billionaires come in.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 14/01/2020 10:38

I've just seen this comparison of the treatment of Kate and Meghan by the press. The hypocrisy is blatant.

www.buzzfeednews.com/article/ellievhall/meghan-markle-kate-middleton-double-standards-royal
Apologies if it's already been posted earlier.

karencantobe · 14/01/2020 10:38

Sarah Ferguson seemed to do well when she left the UK after being hounded by the press here.

DarkOceanWater · 14/01/2020 10:40

The Queen's statement would indicate that both sides are aiming for a soft Megxit at this stage. There are a lot of issues to work through though and I don't think we can guarantee a deal will be reached in time. We also have to think about the Canadian backstop. A hard Megxit may still be on the cards. Only time will tell.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 14/01/2020 10:41

@Hepsibar

Will they be forced to divulge the inner workings and sensitivities publicly on TV to fund their security and lifestyle ... or will the various Duchy's keep paying for a quiet life.
If they divulge information they will have made a choice to do so. Just in the same way they can choose to be dignified and keep their own counsel. They could choose to use Harry's their fame and be a force for good. I hope they do.

What a nightmare if they actually get bumped off by some nutcase with a gun or planned terrorist attack ... the accusations will go on for years.
Well, there are still questions by some over Diana's death with accusations of Henri Paul's blood samples being switched.

It did occur to me that, if there were serious concerns that H&M or just Meghan would do a 'tell all' interview, they would not get to do it. I would be surprised if it would be allowed for information to be divulged, especially if it was thought it might bring down the monarchy.
If I were Meghan I would keep a dignified silence about the RF machinations and behind the scenes stuff. I think she may be a bit of a loose canon though, judging by her friends having disclosed things they know.

karencantobe · 14/01/2020 10:42

Speeches don't need to dish the dirt. Some amusing stories of what life is really like in the royal family will do it. Stories that don't dish any dirt but make people feel they have been given an insider view.

karencantobe · 14/01/2020 10:44

Also divulging the dirt only brings in money for a short while, it is not a long term strategy and not a sensible one to secure long term income.

diddl · 14/01/2020 10:45

"Why have they called the HS Priti Flamingo?"

I know!

Pretty Flamingo is a song by Manfred Mann, but?

SunsetBoulevard3 · 14/01/2020 10:46

The two of them having nothing to say beyond dishing dirt. Happy anecdotes about Royal life won’t work as they clearly hated it all. I can’t imagine Harry would want to be part of a situation where he embarrasses the Queen further. Meghan might do it but it won’t reflect well on her.
Meghan speaks very well but the content is thin and insubstantial. She really has nothing to say beyond ‘woke’ posturing.
I see there’s an article in the dreaded DM about W and H having had a furious row before a charity polo match.

StartupRepair · 14/01/2020 10:48

The soft exit means that every big ticket royal event from now on will be shadowed by speculation about will one or both of them come.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 14/01/2020 10:49

It seems to be a clear theme that Harry has changed since Meghan came in the scene, and not for the better. She seems to have an reputation for being rude to staff and Harry has changed from someone who was well liked without airs and graces, to a bitter, paranoid and angry man.

fallen121 · 14/01/2020 10:50

The Obamas are highly intelligent and have a lot of things to say that are worth listening to. Why would people pay to listen to Harry and Meghan?

I think there is an assumption that lots of their celebrity friends would buy tickets. But let's face it, you're only going to turn up once. These people are more used to going to things where they don't have to pay anything (Royal Weddings) and get lots of freebies and free publicity on TV thrown in.

The content will be dreamed up by speechmakers and whereas when you go to see the Obamas you can be reasonably certain that they will speak directly to the audience with occasional reference to notes because they are accomplished and intelligent people used to public speaking, M&H would be standing there reading from a script for an hour to an audience who have probably paid upwards of ten grand per person. The transport hotel and security costs for this farce will be unbelievably eyewateringly expensive. And in order to make a decent amount of money they are going to have to fill all the seats every single night.

This isn't Mr & Mrs Average paying £100 odd to see the Spice Girls or Madonna in London then following them up to Manchester to see the show again. These are seriously rich toffs and let's face it, there are only so many of those in the world and once you've seen the circus once you're not going to go again.

The likes of the Khardashians make money out of the likes of you and me spending our hard earned cash on their £40 perfume or whatever. It's mass appeal that makes the megabucks. It's volume that sells. That's why Madonna only plays venues that seat thousands of people. At £100 a pop it's a massive wodge of cash even after all the expenses. A speaking engagement it's possibly 100 people if you're lucky.

Would you pay £100 to go to a Spice Girls concert? Would you pay £100 to attend a speaking engagement hosted by Sarah Ferguson? Didn't think so.

All the ordinary people coming out in support of H&M are quite happy to pitch up and wave their flags on the pavement to see them for free. But if you went along and charged everyone a fiver then they would just leave.
