So the saga continues
Thé Canadians are not happy about paying for the Sussexes security

I think that will be their downfall. They can’t actually fund the cost of their «freedom»
Other security experts saying that the cost of 24/7 private security is about £4million per year.

Problem is; they have skipped the a Royal fold, and have to pay the real cost of their security and accommodation . They will have to sell every aspect of their Lives to fund this.

Who said Canada had a "huge" terrorist problem?

In 2014 there were shootings at the Canadian parliament. Dozens of Canadians went to Syria to fight for ISIS. It's like any other Western democracy - most people law abiding and friendly, a minority who aren't and who want to destroy figures of authority.

Of course they need security. I would imagine that Justin Trudeau and his family aren't living without any security either.

JulietJanuary · 14/01/2020 09:46

In Canada I remember a soldier was targeted and killed at their Cenotaph a few years ago. The attacker then had a go at the parliament building where security killed him. Someone like Harry would be a target for all sorts, sadly.

I'm surprised anybody who saw their engagement interview had high hopes or thought Meghan was giving it all up for love. She had clearly just landed the role of a lifetime.

I don't get the criticism of Doria being the NRP for part of M's childhood though. Apparently she was working as a flight attendant, she was single and had to earn a living. The US is a tough place financially. And her Dad had come into money, was going to pay for M's schooling, it probably seemed like the best solution at the time.

I did feel sorry for her at the wedding, sitting alone. She behaved impeccably but I think she hates the scrutiny and the limelight, as would I.

cakeisalwaystheanswer · 14/01/2020 09:50

PH is the grandson of the Canadian monarch, it more than reasonable to expect the Canadians to provide security if they live there as the ever generous British taxpayer funds security for the rest of the useless parasites.
I love the idea that eventually they want to live in the states, the greatest democracy in the world but only if those silly voters elect a President they approve of and even then they still want to use titles to enhance their privilege and status. Land of the free indeed.

painintheholeSIL · 14/01/2020 09:51

@joyfullittlehippo ooh what is Charles Duchy food line?

NewnameOldposter · 14/01/2020 09:53

Well, prince Andrew attended a private school in Canada.

Although one would hope they're aiming for something better than following in those footsteps

TheVanguardSix · 14/01/2020 09:54

oh what is Charles Duchy food line?

Prince Charles organic food range. Just wikipedia it. There's nothing scandalous about it.

PineappleDanish · 14/01/2020 09:56

Duchy Originals - sold in Waitrose. Although to split hairs (or heirs maybe?) it's a brand run by the Duchy of Cornwall. I wouldn't imagine Charles gets that involved with branding and pricing decisions. The Duchy of Cornwall has always been a commercial enterprise.

PaperFlowers4 · 14/01/2020 09:56

did feel sorry for her at the wedding, sitting alone.

That was really odd. I thought Meghan should have at least had Doria bring a couple of her friends along so she wouldn’t have to sit there alone, for the ”optics” if nothing else. It was weird and sad to see her her alone among a sea of clooneys and oprahs

SameOldHorrorStory · 14/01/2020 09:57

You can already buy a Buckingham Palace Honey Dipper. I kid you not.

After your talk of “The Harry” and his bigger brother, “The William”, I genuinely thought the above was a euphemism.

GlitchStitch · 14/01/2020 09:58

Yes a plus one for Doria, or even pairing her up with one of Meghan's friends to 'look after her'. It must have been very overwhelming for her, she seems to live a quiet life.

cakeisalwaystheanswer · 14/01/2020 09:58

And the appalling behaviour of the Yorks etc is exactly why they all need to be stripped of their titles. Fergie's trip to Saudi after the murder of Jamal Khashoggi was dressed to look like a royal visit. No doubt she collected a few quid in the process but she gave everyday Saudis the impression that the UK was fine with the Khashoggi situation, removing titles would help prevent this. The UK has struggled on for many years without Dukes of Edinburgh, Sussex and York before they were re-introduced I'm sure we'll cope if all recent dukedoms are revoked and no more titles given.

At the risk of repeating anyone as I haven't RTFT I KNEW Meghan wouldn’t be allowed to dial in to the meeting yesterday and I can’t think she’d have been happy about that but the message would have been (I’m guessing, have no inside info) “if you want a conversation you ned to turn up”.

The very fact that she thought she could dial in is quite an interesting illustration of how she’s just not getting it really: royal protocol / respectful treatment of senior royals, eg POW and The Queen. You don’t just say “I CBA to be there, I’ll dial in” when it’s such a big deal. It wouldn’t fly in corporate life and I’m not surprised it didn’t fly with The Queen.

Blobby10 · 14/01/2020 10:00

Has anyone else noticed that the BBC don't have H & M stories on their website as headline news? And GMB didn't have it on their 7am headlines either. Daily Mail is, of course, still showing a dozen or more articles on the same topic but I wonder if the lack of TV headlines is the start of things to come and the press giving H & M what they say they want?

JulietJanuary · 14/01/2020 10:01

I had missed that Saudi / Fergie story.

PineappleDanish · 14/01/2020 10:02

Looking back, the whole wedding thing was weird. Lots of us have strained relationships with family members but I don't think I have ever been to a wedding where the bride/groom has had one solitary member of their family there. No aunts, uncles, cousins, even some really old family friend who you grew up with who isn't a blood relative but you call Auntie. Meghan had her friends, and her mum. That was it.

Doria did acquit herself well but tbh when compared with the antics of Meghan's dad in the run-up to the wedding, she was always going to look saintly.

Butterymuffin · 14/01/2020 10:03

I KNEW Meghan wouldn’t be allowed to dial in to the meeting yesterday

Did this not happen in the end then? I haven't seen it mentioned.

Re Archie's school, I thought Harry had not necessarily enjoyed Eton? He might not want that for his son anyway.

TheMustressMhor · 14/01/2020 10:03

I bought some of Prince Charles' honey, from his shop in Tetbury.

It went off after three weeks (turned mouldy) so I wrote and complained.

Prince Charles never responded. That is very poor customer service.

There were things in his shop such as £600 rugs. You couldn't make it up.

TheMustressMhor · 14/01/2020 10:04

Actually it was marmalade...

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 14/01/2020 10:04

I read an article earlier of how Harry, in his earlier days, really wanted to go to Africa to live and look after the animals. I would be more impressed with him now if he decided to do exactly that.
Sadly, I don't think his marriage would last long in those circumstances either. I don't think Meghan would want a quiet life of altruism. Her nature is such that she wants to be in the limelight. That is fine. It takes all sorts.

I think William really was trying to be the best brother he could be when he warned Harry about rushing into marriage. Princess Diana wanted them to know their partners well before marriage because she hardly knew PC when they married. Harry has taken offence but I think William meant well. I think most people would want that for their DC or siblings to give the marriage the best chance of surviving thriving.

EcocabbyRickShaw · 14/01/2020 10:06

I've been ridiculously over-invested in all this, only because of the soap opera way the Sussexes handled the whole thing. If it had all been sorted out in a dignified way, I can honestly say I'd have given it a vague "ooh that's quite interesting" and then forgotten all about the whole thing.

But for the future of the Sussexes, this comment today (from a reader of one of the tabloid newspapers online) sums the whole thing up for me:

"Does she [the Queen] honestly consider that the GB public, would turn up at any event, where just these two, or one of these, were going to be, knowing full well they didn't want to be there, and were only there if it promoted their brand?"

Jillyhilly · 14/01/2020 10:11

I found myself watching her Africa tour interview yesterday, the one where she says no one asks her how she is. I remember thinking at the time, yeah join the club love - noone ever asks me how I am either, and I’ve got a job, a mortgage, a larger family than yours, no nanny, no family support and no lovely trips round the world either. I really think that was a big turn-off moment to a lot of normal people who struggle to make ends meet and spend their lives just getting by and yet somehow struggle on without other people asking them how they are.

notmoresheep · 14/01/2020 10:11

I find comparisons by some posters to the Carters, Clooneys, Beckhams hilarious. These are all immensely talented people from ordinary backgrounds who have worked hard for everything they have (OK Vicky Becks singing not so much). H & M aren’t remotely in the same league.

The TV actress may well return triumphant to California with her royal title but that’ll only go so far in a world where real talent and superstars are ten a penny. No doubt the American masses will lap it up though.

Harry is a proper royal and a military man, he’ll be a fish out of water in that world. The cringeworthy Disney clip says it all really. As others have pointed out he has never had to stand on his own two feet and will be fairly clueless about the real financial ramifications of security and the cost of the life they want to lead. He’s in for a rude awakening. I hope PC takes them at their word and cuts them off after 12 months.

The whole thing makes them look so self important, they think they can be bigger than the RF and can do more for the world without being part of the institution. The size of ego is staggering. One of them has grand ambitions on the global stage and delusions of grandeur that’s for sure. The planning of websites, trademarks, company in Delaware this has been on the cards all along.

No way should the Canadians pay for their security. As senior royals the British taxpayer does that, since they’ve thumbed their noses they should be happy to fork out themselves.

Ecocabby, I endorse your entire post.
