Someone on another thread has suggested Empressaurus for @RumNotRun’s new cat.

I think it’s an excellent name but Raven might take it as a challenge.

I haven't seen that post but it is a great name. I think I'm still leaning towards Boudicca but I'll see what she thinks when she moves in.

Breadcat24 · 30/09/2026 12:47

@RumNotRun You could call her Boo for short - that would fit in nicely with your tribe's names!

Love that 😍

@Breadcat24 @CatsonPollock I genuinely hadn't thought about that but a great tribute to Miss Ghostie! 😁

I started to read but it made me mad and sad. My friend has fostered two mum cats with kittens this spring/summer and neither of the mums were more than 6 months old. One, admittedly, was a colony cat but the other was someone's pet which they clearly couldn't be bothered to get chipped and spayed and had dumped when she got pregnant. Luckily some kind builders fed her and called the rescue when they realised she was pregnant.

And yet apparently I’m ‘judgy’ for saying it’s cruel not to spay cats.

Have these people ever tried living with an unspayed female cat?

I remember my week with FC1 while she was in heat. Calling at the window, the sex crawl, the writhing on her back, the Tom cats queuing up outside... I don't think either she or I slept properly for a week. I was relieved, in more ways than one, once she'd been done!

(Mind you, I do think she is quite highly sexed. She still doesn't seem convinced that she's been spayed and likes to flirt with any cat that crosses her path. Even the chief neighbourhood Thugcat is charmed. He's a big entire stray Tom who circles the block and breaks and enters to eat other cats' food. Various people have been trying to trap him, but he is wiley and obviously happy with his set up, so he has managed to evade capture to date.)

EmpressaurusKitty · 01/10/2026 07:47

I remember when I was fostering sisters who were waiting to be spayed. Living in a flat at least meant their smell didn’t reach the local toms, but god, the wailing & the scratching at the door…

When Kitten 1 went into heat, Kitten 2 was very concerned & tried to help by grooming her.

When Kitten 2 was yowling, Kitten 1 just sat on her.

ARGH!

Tobias didn't appear at supper time last night, wasn't worried because if he's deeply asleep in the evenings he sometimes comes down late. Got up this morning, most of the supper was left in the bowls. A little puzzled, but scraped the old into the food waste and put new breakfast down. Still no Tobias, starting to get a little worried now.

Got ready for work, last thing I do is give them some of their favourite sliced chicken. He came HOPPING on 3 legs from behind the sofa, took the chicken then dropped it. Called vet, called Annie to help me get him there, called work.

Naturally he was still able to shoot round the house to avoid capture despite being on 3 legs! He then growled and hissed at Annie, something he hasn't done for ages.

Vet thinks he's pulled something in his shoulder or elbow. He hissed at her as well, normally he adores her. He's had painkilling injection and also a "just in case" antibiotic in case we've missed anything. We tried liquid Gabapentin while still there and he dribbled for ages afterwards, even rejected lik e lix after which he'd had some of earlier in the visit. Going to TRY Gabapentin tablets crushed in treats later for the pain & inflammation (he is not pill-able at home) but he loathes them as well.

How an indoor only cat, in his own home where he's been for years, somehow manages to injure himself like that goodness knows. We did notice a dark smudge across that paw, so think he may have got it stuck under something & injured himself trying to pull away?

Allergictoironing · 01/10/2026 11:59

Oh, and he's lost 200g since his visit a couple of weeks ago. Some of that could be down to him missing 2 meals, but seeing as they get ad lib dry and a total of 155g wet between them that can't be the only reason

EmpressaurusKitty · 01/10/2026 12:03

And some idiots think indoor only cats don’t need insurance. Poor Tobias, and poor you & Annie.

KeziaOAP · 01/10/2026 12:06

What a worry @Allergictoironing poor Tobias, hopefully painkiller starting to work and he's more comfortable.

I KNEW I shouldn't have typed that last comment on that thread yesterday, saying exactly that - though referring to illness! Almost as provocative as someone saying how quiet it is at work...

Breadcat24 · 01/10/2026 12:23

@Allergictoironing best wishes to Tobias

CatsonPollock · 01/10/2026 14:21

Poor Tobias - hope he recovers quickly and the weight loss is contained.

Cats can easily injure themselves indoors...
A couple of weeks ago, Mama Pollock jumped down from the top of the kitchen cabinet where she regularly snoozes and misjudged her next jump from the counter top to the floor. She didn't see the box of items I was collecting to go to the tip so landed in it, then panicked and fell out onto the floor. She limped away dragging a leg and hid under a chair so then I, of course, panicked and rushed her to the vet expecting the worst! Thankfully vet examination showed no broken bones just soft tissue/ligament swelling so madam was on anti-inflammatory medication for 3 days and "told" not to jump. She seemed fine a couple of hours later and proceeded to do post-poo zoomies as per usual!

CatsonPollock · 01/10/2026 14:25

Mama Pollock looking innocent.
And she's suddenly grown one white whisker - what's that all about?

Allergictoironing · 01/10/2026 14:31

Whew! Lucky escape there for Mama Pollock. Tobias went into his downstairs igloo shortly after coming home. He came out to beg for treats on 3 legs & carried on like that for a few minutes (yes he got lots of treats & fuss), and has retired back into the igloo. Clearly still in a lot of pain despite the injection, and still not wanting his proper food - he did look at it, then carried on back to the igloo.

I can't miss work tomorrow, we have a critical deadline that needs me and my boss working together in the office, but I may ask Annie if she can pop in during the day if she's out & about at all. Luckily, we were supposed to be doing the work today but the boss lady had to change it to tomorrow. I have a doctor's appt soon, so there was no point in me going in this afternoon because by the time I got there I would be leaving within a couple of hours.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 01/10/2026 16:15

Oh dear, Allergic - that all sounds very stressful for you and Annie.
Poor old Tobias.
I hope he starts to feel better soon.

@CatsonPollock, how old is she? Our dear departed Rosie girl lost all her black whiskers and exchanged them for a full white set at around age 14.Miss B (current dictator) gains and loses the odd white one but mainly maintains a full set of black whiskers aged 20 - they were litter mates.

Poor Tobias! Hope he gets better soon. Vix used to frequently fall off the bannister onto the stairs and hurt herself but then go straight back upstairs and jump on the bannister again to sleep. She hurt herself so often that I ended up putting double sided tape all over it so that she wouldn't jump up there. At times I swear cats are just dumb.

About 6years old - according to the rescue she was still under 2 when we adopted her with her only surviving kitten.
Maybe it's the stress of living with DH and me! 😹

MiniPantherOwner · 01/10/2026 19:04

Poor Tobias, I hope he's feeling less sore soon. I woke up one morning several years ago to find Boris limping around on three legs. Took him to the vet where he happily sprawled out on the vet's table while she examined him and concluded that he was probably just bruised as she couldn't find anything wrong. It wasn't until I got home that I went into the spare room and found the shelf my dad had helped me put up the day before had fallen off the wall complete with raw plugs. The vet was obviously right as by the next day he was fine. Neither of them have ever been near that shelf since.

I'm going to try and book Boris into the vets tomorrow, as if my scales are correct he's lost more weight since his check up in March. He's only 3.71kg now, which is low considering he's a long beastie.

Kirova · 01/10/2026 23:20

Poor Tobias, and poor you! I hope he'll be on the mend quickly.
