OMG my visitor cat was actually a stray cat and is going to become officially mine - I have questions! And he needs a name

I've had what I first thought was a visitor cat for quite some time. Beautiful little tabby boy, very bold and entrepenurial - would come in to sleep during the day (I have a ground floor flat and windows and doors often often). I just thought he lived with a family who put him out during the day. He was always keen to take himself off at the end of the day. More latterly I'd tried a paper collar, asking around and a post to the local facebook group. Got nothing from any of that.

To cut a long story short, the cat looked ill last week - I found him on a deckchair on my patio looking very poorly - and after a couple of days of monitoring, I took him to my local vet. They scanned for a chip and there was an owner. I felt really, really sad but also pleased for him.

However. The owner on the chip had apparently "given him away." It took a few days for that owner to contact the current owner, who, I quote, "hasn't seem him in months and doesn't want him." (Can I just say here that this cat is approx 4 years old and not neutered, which makes me a little judgy of these owners.)

So the vet's practice have rung and asked if I want the cat. I do, and I'm picking him up later, but my mind is reeling a bit.

I didn't mind the cat going off god knows where overnight when I thought he had somewhere to go, but I now think he's just been out-out. I guess neutering may help a bit with his range and I'll get that done shortly.

On the days he was poorly last week he still went off at night but I left a patio door open slightly for him and he seemed to come in, in the early hours. It's not safe for me to have that door open - it's literally a patio door to my ground floor bedroom - so I either have to keep him inside overnight (he'd hate it) or get a cat flap put in the patio door. (I think there was a useful thread about this kind of thing recently).

I don't think he's ever used a little tray - he just had the ability to sleep for nine hours with a bladder of steel and then I assume go when he goes outside. I would LOVE not to have a litter tray in the flat and wonder if we can just continue with this system. I guess some of this will work itself out.

I wonder if there's anyway I can reinforce that this will now be his permanent home? (I have bought lik-e-lix!) He's been living at the vets for a week and apparently hating it.

He also needs a name. I've just been calling him "the little cat." The previous owner apparently called him Shrieky, which absolutely isn't right.

Cat tax follows.

Oh I just saw that small cat Jeremy helps you work from home, and also guards your Persephones! He’s useful as well as beautiful. What a gentleman. He’s so fortunate to have found you, it’s a perfect match. Thanks for sharing photos, made me happy. Lovely!

Last year we were contacted by a rescue who had trapped a semi feral cat on our estate. We had all been aware of him for about 8 years but no one had managed to catch him
He fell ill and was then trapped, they felt he wasn’t suitable for a home so we’re trying to find someone who would take him in, keep and eye on him etc
We offered him a warm spot in our garage, food litter tray etc within 4 months he had started to come into the house and now he lives inside, hardly ever ventures out and is a love bug with us but still very wary of people he doesn’t know.
The biggest difference was neutering him and as you say. I would get that done asap. But our boy has always used a litter tray since we’ve had him, in fact out of all the cats we’ve had previously he is by far the cleanest.
congratulations on your new addition!

He radiates a regal name. Whatever human name you choose (big fan of human names for animals) you must put a lord in front of it

I'd like to suggest Barry - it stems from the Old French word barri, which translates directly to "striped" 😊

How wonderful to be able to welcome him into your life on formal terms. I can't imagine my life without my little ginger diva, and I feel confident that yours will be all the richer now!

This just popped into my head too seconds ago!
Bazza or Baz
Also related to his appearance, not just a random name

Get a cat flap - I’m sure he won’t use a litter tray unless ill as he’s used to going outside

Congratulations and good luck with everything!

You need to get your new little boy booked in to be neutered and vaccinations asap. Male cats that aren't neutered will roam great distances in search of female cats and get themselves into fights.

I would recommend that you install a cat flat within your patio door, so that he can come and go as he pleases. It might take him a little while before he figures out how to use it, but you can peg it open initially, until he gets used to it.

Plenty of food, comfy bed and yes I would have a litter tray to start with, especially if he's getting used to a cat flap. You could put it in the bathroom. Usually you'd keep a cat inside for 3 weeks, to get used to their new surroundings, before letting them out, but as he's used to your home, he may not need this step.

Congratulations on becoming a cat Mum!!

DP suggested Ted, or Edward if you want to be fancy.

Shinyrain · 18/06/2026 14:48

Milo for a name.
He sure is gorgeous 🐈

I was adopted by a cat a good few years ago. She enjoyed me working from home and being a very vocal cat joined in with telephone and video calls. She became quite well known by colleagues. RIP Poppy 💔

Congratulations on being Chosen by The Cat Distribution System.

What a sweet boy.

Call him Roger.

hamse · 18/06/2026 14:56

I love how cats randomly move in with people. They are experts at it. Don't like where they are living? Of they go looking around the neighbourhood for someone they like the look of, start moving in by stealth and next thing you know they are there with their feet up on your couch and you are paying for their every need and tending to all their whims!

Cocklodgers have exactly the same modus operandi but are no where near as cute and tend to be a total pain in the arse whereas a cat brings so much joy!

WildCherryBlossom · 18/06/2026 14:57

Beautiful boy! Lucky you. He looks like a Julian, Jasper or Jeremy to me.

ClairDeLaLune · 18/06/2026 15:02

Awww OP what a lovely story! Congratulations on your new cat, and congratulations to NewCat on his new lovely mummy!

You won’t need a litter tray if you have a cat flap put in, he will much prefer to go outside.

I think he is a Brian!

It's how I got my big boy last year. Thought owners let him out at night as he'd rock up in the dark, huge beastie (Maine flaming Coon!). After a couple of months turned up during the day too. Came in for breakfast one day with blood on his face so off to the vet - - - he was chipped but it wasn't registered (my heart when the beep went off should have been a warning that I was already invested). Entire male so castration first - with blood test to check for FIV (£95 + £65) plus meds for the burst abscess on his face from fighting the local lads. Costs a flaming fortune in cat insurance and food and my sweet older cat wasn't thrilled but ..... first time only yesterday they both curled up next to me.

Oh, local glazing company did the cat flap, think it was £130 including the flap.

He looks so content and very much at home.

MrSchubertWhiskers · 18/06/2026 15:09

I love the name Jeremy for him, I'm also a bit obsessed with your bookcase, what books are those?

Haven't read all the replies so could be repeating but yes to a cat flap - microchip one - and keep him inside for 2 weeks.

Iamacatslave · 18/06/2026 15:09

He Is gorgeous.

Ayarreet · 18/06/2026 15:09

He's obviously a Trevor.
Trev when you're chatting to him, Trevor when he scratches the sofa.

MsSmartShoes · 18/06/2026 15:12

He is very noble. He looks like a Lennard to me.

A little?

I am so happy that you have found each other! I am having a shit time right now and this sort of thing (and watching Happy Doggo Niall Harbison on Insta - check it out if you don't know him) really go a way to helping me forget that general shitness for a while.

Congratulations to you both 😍

He's very beautiful. He looks just like Benny (the cat who picked me)!

MandyMotherOfBrian · 18/06/2026 15:24

Oh, and his name is Jochi.

Jochi also overcame adversity and was estranged from his family but he didn't let it hold him back (to say the least!).

Zara9698 · 18/06/2026 15:26

He looks like a Stefan to me. He's gorgeous.
