OMG my visitor cat was actually a stray cat and is going to become officially mine - I have questions! And he needs a name

I've had what I first thought was a visitor cat for quite some time. Beautiful little tabby boy, very bold and entrepenurial - would come in to sleep during the day (I have a ground floor flat and windows and doors often often). I just thought he lived with a family who put him out during the day. He was always keen to take himself off at the end of the day. More latterly I'd tried a paper collar, asking around and a post to the local facebook group. Got nothing from any of that.

To cut a long story short, the cat looked ill last week - I found him on a deckchair on my patio looking very poorly - and after a couple of days of monitoring, I took him to my local vet. They scanned for a chip and there was an owner. I felt really, really sad but also pleased for him.

However. The owner on the chip had apparently "given him away." It took a few days for that owner to contact the current owner, who, I quote, "hasn't seem him in months and doesn't want him." (Can I just say here that this cat is approx 4 years old and not neutered, which makes me a little judgy of these owners.)

So the vet's practice have rung and asked if I want the cat. I do, and I'm picking him up later, but my mind is reeling a bit.

I didn't mind the cat going off god knows where overnight when I thought he had somewhere to go, but I now think he's just been out-out. I guess neutering may help a bit with his range and I'll get that done shortly.

On the days he was poorly last week he still went off at night but I left a patio door open slightly for him and he seemed to come in, in the early hours. It's not safe for me to have that door open - it's literally a patio door to my ground floor bedroom - so I either have to keep him inside overnight (he'd hate it) or get a cat flap put in the patio door. (I think there was a useful thread about this kind of thing recently).

I don't think he's ever used a little tray - he just had the ability to sleep for nine hours with a bladder of steel and then I assume go when he goes outside. I would LOVE not to have a litter tray in the flat and wonder if we can just continue with this system. I guess some of this will work itself out.

I wonder if there's anyway I can reinforce that this will now be his permanent home? (I have bought lik-e-lix!) He's been living at the vets for a week and apparently hating it.

He also needs a name. I've just been calling him "the little cat." The previous owner apparently called him Shrieky, which absolutely isn't right.

Cat tax follows.

Does your lease allow cats and changes to windows/doors (if leasehold)

“Helping” me to work from home …

It’s not helping it’s supervising …

KeptWomanSummer · 18/06/2026 15:36

Aaah he’s so handsome. And look at him smiling in that second photo. Absolutely at home and so happy.

I think he needs a title, he’s very proper looking. Sir/Lord/Professor etc before whichever other name you choose. (I vote for a foodstuff)

FartNRoses · 18/06/2026 15:42

He’s gorgeous! I’d call him Pablo ❤️

MrsCarmelaSoprano · 18/06/2026 15:46

We got our cat the same way, 10 years ago.

Get a cat flap, one that is microchip sensitive

Get him microchipped before he comes home plus jabs etc and book him to be neutered or ideally do it before he comes home

Get a litter tray but don't expect him to use it, ours rarely has as he was feral.

Lots of lik e lix and he'll keep coming back.

He's lovely ❤️

He really needs to stay inside until he’s neutered (most rescues are bulging at the seams with kittens & mums because of all the irresponsible gits who can’t be bothered to spay / neuter their cats) so yes, getting him done while he’s at the vet is a great idea.

You’re doing a brilliant thing, congratulations!

Ferdinand. Wishing you many happy moggy years! 🐯

I had a tabby cat whom I loved so much for 11 years. He also chose us. He sadly passed away in December last year. I used to wake up for 11 years 2-3 times a night to let him in and out. Cat flap wasn't really helpful as he used to bring mice in, which was stressful. Maybe you could call him Toby.

“Helping” me to work from home …

Now that is exactly what our rescue cat Larry does when I'm busy at my desk. The only difference is he's jet-black, not gorgeous tabby.

This is Colin, same story as your beautiful boy this time last year!
neutered and chipped and ALL mine.😻

To add name suggestion…Lenny 💖

SabreIsMyFave · 18/06/2026 16:11

What an absolutely beautiful cat! 😍

namechangefor2mins · 18/06/2026 16:12

He's just lovely and blends in with your duvet cover perfectly. I think he's a Godfrey or a Montgomery.

BlackCatsAreBrilliant · 18/06/2026 16:17

DD suggests Fleance (possibly due to being knee deep in revising Macbeth for upcoming mocks).

Myblueclematis · 18/06/2026 16:20

What a lovely boy, you are very lucky (and so is he) 😺

Arthur.

He looks like an Arthur to me.

and me.

ThePieceHall · 18/06/2026 16:22

Balthazar or Bartholomew. Also, a woman after my own heart with your row of Persephone books.

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 18/06/2026 16:23

Bennett (Ben to his friends and every permutation thereof that cat owners seem to come up with no matter what their cats proper name is!).

Google tells me it's an English medieval form of Benedict, Latin Meaning: "blessed" and he is blessed to have found you after taking care of himself for so long, like the cat equivalent of winning the lottery.

May his previous owners stand on Lego. In bare feet.

Congratulations on being chosen by the Cat Distribution System.

I recommend a human name - maybe Derek or Clive?

My beloved late tabby was called Bruce by the rescue centre, and it stuck. We now have a young Jack Russell - a rescue dog, called Alan. Same reason for the name. He actually looks like an Alan, if that makes sense !!

ItsmeMargo · 18/06/2026 16:36

He is absolutely gorgeous, and is the spitting image of my boy x

edited to add: I also was chosen by him rather than the other way around :-)

Lovemycat2023 · 18/06/2026 16:37

He is lovely! And you are a good person. We had a cat flap put in our french doors after ages of not having one (I was worried it would look rubbish!) and it’s the best thing! I close it at night and ours stays in 10-6 overnight. Also there was a lot of discussion recently about a cat flap that prevents them bringing in gifts.

WHERE IS THE GODDAMNED CAT TAX? 😁
You are so lucky to be chosen. I have a cat flap in my glass door. I got a double glazing company to put it in for me.
I think it sounds like he will be very happy to pee outdoors. I have a litter tray for my cats because the old lady next door doesn't want or need to be clearing up cat poo - she is 90. My two use it all the time and come back in to use it.
I'll bet he will soon be as happy as Larry which is also a good name and the name of our no 10 cat too.

OMG LARRY.

Happy as Larry!

He's a Larry OP. Call him Larry because he's happy and lucky by the sound of things.

TheDevilFindsWorkForIdleMums · 18/06/2026 16:41

Norman !

Nigel or Alan. He looks like an Alan. Or a Kevin.

My cat was called Daryl. Chosen by the RSPCA, but we kept it as it suited him!

He was also a tabby, like yours!

I think its great that Leonard, having moved in, has graciously allowed you to remain in the home.

We have been similarly acquired by a semi feral one. We now spend relentlessly on dreamies and are at his beck and call whenever he wants to come in or out. Naturally he has declined to use a catflap when the slaves humans can just as easily be on hand to predict his every whim.

We've named him The Cat.
