Currently about 25 here just south east of London, was well into the 30s early afternoon. Humid and steamy as well. Cats have cleverly worked out the place where the curtain directs any breeze coming in the window down to the floor and are taking turns at lying there. I saw a headline earlier today suggesting the temperature could drop into the teens next week, but the long term forecast still has it typically 25-27 round this way.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 29/07/2026 23:01

It was 14° here today.

Urgh, still forecast to be 29 degrees here today. Not the best of days for poor Girlcat to have to go to the vet for her MoT & a (free) dental check-up, especially as her appointment is 4pm so at the very hottest part of the day.

I was admiring how white and fluffy Linney looked and then Gizmo 😂At least Matilda now looks modest in comparison. Despite being siblings Boris has never adopted a show everyone everything pose and instead sprawls himself in elegant positions around the house. Some cats just seem to be exhibitionists.

I have no idea what Toad is doing.

Lex is being adorable at the moment and curling up next to me (well, technically it's me sitting next to him, but he doesn't move when I sit down) @TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne

Ghost stole a piece of lettuce of my dinner plate earlier. She never tries to take food so I'm not sure if I was more surprised that she did take some or that she took lettuce!

Goodness - a cat who eats lettuce?

Gizmo went out a couple of hours ago. Naturally, because I want to go to bed, he hasn't come back yet.

Kitty’s going back to the vet for her weight check on Thursday & this is the first time since I got her that she’s had to go for anything more than her annual check up & booster.

I’m 98% sure she’s fine - well, look at her - but the problem is that it’s not long enough for her to have forgotten the last time which means she’s still very wary around the carrier. She’ll go in for a lick-e-lix but come straight out again if I get too close. And she has far too many high perches to escape to.

This might be the time that I shut us both in the hall & end up wrestling her in.

She’s just seen me picking her big toys up, harrumphed & vanished because she knows that means I’m going to hoover. Too clever for her own good.

Defiantly41 · 02/08/2026 11:57

Oh, the clever ones are the worst, Empress! Our dear departed Rosie was a bit intellectually challenged and every time we picked her up, she thought “oh good, cuddles” even when given a pill or popped into her carrier for vet or cattery.

Her sister however is very clever and I have a complicated routine of shutting all the internal doors, eliminating her from rooms where she can get under or on things or get out, then it’s usually a case of quickly grabbing her as I only get one chance. For a teeny tiny cat (2.3 kg and 20 yrs old) it’s like wrangling a muscular octopus, but over the years I’ve learned not to be too tentative as it makes things worse!

HumanToCatBeasties · 02/08/2026 13:23

Matilda is very intelligent as well, it's lucky that she's also very lazy otherwise she'd be causing all sorts of mischief. I've been doing some decorating, so I've been luring the cats to the spare bedroom with some Dreamies and shutting them in. She will now come for Dreamies in any other room of the house, but not the spare room.

I went to the Co-Op today. This is an achievement. I haven't walked anywhere on my own since the beginning of June.

DS1 is on his way up from London yay.

On my way back from the Co, I spotted three cats enjoying the sun.

Picard in the car park.

Good for you Broon, if it was tiring, remember to rest!

Brilliant news Broon hope your good progress continues apace.

HumanToCatBeasties · 02/08/2026 21:13

Glad you're feeling up to getting around more Broon. Nice to see a photo of Picard, I don't think we've seen one in a while.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 02/08/2026 22:33

OMG
🤣🤣🤣

DS1 arrived from London just as Gizmo schlepped in with a live mouse in his mouth.

I have never known Gizmo to catch wildlife before. He's just too fat and slow.

Anyway - since the mouse was still very much alive (although it was actually dying), we put a bowl of cat food down to distract The Argyll Mouse Murderer, and DS1 grabbed the mouse and took it outside. It then lay on its side and breathed its last.

Linney, in the meantime, ran away in dismay.

Gizmo, after stuffing himself with a pouch of Whiskas, discovered that his mouse was no longer in the house. Outraged, he padded outside and found the dead body.

He then eviscerated it and brought the head and the tail in, laying them carefully on the carpet.

DS1 sighed and removed the bits of dead mouse for me. I daresay he was wishing that he hadn't just driven 550 miles from London, to have a week's holiday in the wilds of Argyll.

I pointed out to him that it is the duty of men to take out bins, catch mice and remove disjecta membra for their wives and mothers.
