New tiny kitten

Hello! We have acquired a teeny kitten (supposedly 9 weeks old) but she’s the runt and is very small.
i haven’t weighed her, we only got her today.
We’ve kitten proofed the lounge and are keeping the dog and the other cat away.
She has one snotty eye which I’m cleaning every couple of hours with cooled saline solution
I’ve bought kitten milk and dry and wet food (the same as she was having where she came from).
Shes done a wee and a loose poo in the litter tray and mostly slept. She wasn’t interested in the food or water or saucer of milk so I syringed about 5ml warm kitten milk into her and that woke her up a bit. she then ate a little wet food.

are we doing the right things?

I’d get her checked at the vets . Where did you get her from as kittens really should be with mum until 12 weeks ideally .

Shedmistress · 21/01/2026 13:39

Did she actually eat the wet food or smoosh it all over her face?

Iheartmysmart · 21/01/2026 13:43

Gosh, she’s tiny! I took on a rescue feral kitten about 5 months ago who was around six weeks old. She had a nasty dose of cat flu when I got her and was quite poorly but wasn’t quite as small as your little one.

I would try and get her to the vets if possible for a check up. Other than that, keep her quiet and offer food and water. Mine didn’t really eat for a couple of days and had no idea how to use a litter tray. She also slept a lot, probably the trauma of being caught and taken to an utterly strange environment. She’s now causing utter chaos and is a little whirlwind. The vet thinks she will always have respiratory problems though.

Fatiguedwithlife · 21/01/2026 13:43

She ate about a teaspoon full.
The house she came from is disgusting… cats everywhere and filthy.
I reckon she has a better chance with us than there.
I’ll get her booked in at the vet

I hope you have reported the place you got your kitten from if it’s that bad!

Fatiguedwithlife · 21/01/2026 13:50

Appointment for 3pm today for check up and first vaccines

@Favouritefruitsunfortunately I think the lady where she came from doesn’t see anything wrong with her set up, a lot of people live like that. She was saying the mother was going to be spayed today (!) but she couldn’t find her bank card so had to cancel… she does love the cats you can tell, but is extremely uneducated. It’s not uncommon in some areas unfortunately

Thank you for the support. I’m sure she will be fine, it’s just a little scary when they’re so fragile! We’ve always rescued adult cats who are very robust!

Aww it is really scary when they're so weenie- we got two kittens last year and the little girl was the runt of the litter and so tiny - her brother was bigger and a bit more robust! They both slept a lot at first, but once they were used to their surroundings they soon got livelier.

They're 7 months old and very healthy now!

Good luck at the vets!

Fatiguedwithlife · 21/01/2026 14:27

ive just weighed her and she’s only 393g which is what a 3-4 week old kitten should weigh 😮
glad we’ve got appointment this afternoon, I hope she will be ok

She looks a beauty.

What colour are her eyes please? That should give you an indication of age. I suspect she's younger than 9 weeks and perhaps not properly weaned as yet.

You've done right to get her checked at the vets but she might be too little for jabs but they will advise.

Is the kitten milk you have kitten milk replacer or the treat milks you can buy?

Plump82 · 21/01/2026 14:45

I really don't think she's 9 weeks. I got my pair at 10 weeks and they were much bigger than her. I'm glad you've given her a safe and loving home. Do you have a nice, wee, cosy bed for her. My pair loved the igloo type beds when they were babies.

justthecat · 21/01/2026 15:29

Aww she’s a little calico, my youngest came from the same sort of environment as yours sounds like.
shes nearly 3 now and a solid chunk of mischief, lots of care I’m sure she’ll be great 😻

Ohdearwhatnow4 · 21/01/2026 15:45

Totally agree doesn't look older than 4 weeks. You can get special kitten milk and its better to bottle feed than syringe. No doubt the vets will explain it. If you have a box or crate, try popping her in their with a wrapped up hot water bottle as she will get cold very quick.

IsThisLifeNow · 21/01/2026 15:50

Oh wow, she's gorgeous! Yes agree you were right to take her in this case as you can show her more care than where she came from. Best of luck, what is her name? Can we have a few more photos too please? Absolutely adorable!

RubyMentor · 21/01/2026 16:00

She’s gorgeous I hope the visit to the vet goes okay

MarxistMags · 21/01/2026 16:02

Awww, beautiful pusskins x

Villanellesproudmum · 21/01/2026 16:08

Did you pay for the poor kitten which might be the actual motivation of the woman who’s house you got her from.

LaurieFairyCake · 21/01/2026 16:38

I hope the vets says she’s viable 😔, so tiny

Fatiguedwithlife · 21/01/2026 17:10

On antibiotics for gammy eye and wormed and special food for upset tummy. She was hypothermic but was feisty enough to not have to be kept in hospital thank goodness

The vet wasn’t particularly forthcoming about feeding regimes or milk vs water, just said just give her whatever. Keep her warm and bring her back when she’s bigger for her jabs.
I asked about reporting the ‘breeder’ but they had no idea, said you can ring the RSPCA but their threshold is pretty low and if the cats are fed and have shelter they likely won’t do anything 🤷‍♀️
They aged her between 6-7 weeks but small

Oh bless her. I’m very glad she was able to come back home with you today and the vet’s didn’t keep her in. Hopefully with some decent food and medication for her poorly eye, she’ll be feeling much better soon. Lots of cuddles will help with the hypothermia if she’ll let you.
