Congratulations, DS2! I'm sure there will be some fine Estonian NMCs.

Isn't Estonian akin to Finnish and fiendishly difficult? But I'm sure musicians have a headstart with language learning.

Allergictoironing · 27/06/2025 18:49

Congrats to DS2 👏

Esgaroth · 27/06/2025 19:40

That's brilliant, well done to your son! Hope everything goes well 🤞

Esgaroth · 27/06/2025 19:44

Oh I didn't read it properly, see he's got the place. My excuse is that I've caught the illness that DD had and am a bit fuzzy of brain right now. Congratulations!

Oh no! I hope Dr Kettle’s looking after you & that you feel better soon, @Esgaroth.

Well done Grumpy Jnr #2!

(closest I could find to a cat conductor! 😸)

Ghostie offers up her tummy for tickles.

Beautiful floof. Is it a genuine offer or a trap?

A complete and total tripod trap. She may let you touch it for a second but only so she doesn't have to stretch to flay your hands.

Well done to your son @Grumpyoldpersonwithcats , that's fantastic.
My DD reckons if she can't get into a British orchestra once she's finished at the academy she may well try a Scandinavian one.
But that's a few years away. It is very competitive though.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 27/06/2025 22:38

ARGH to the power of 984.

I've spent four hours setting up my new printer. Four hours. The last one took me 35 mins.

To calm myself down I've found a YT video of Barbara Hendricks singing Mozart's Laudate Dominum.

It's about the only piece of his I can listen to.

Never been a big Mozart fan myself! Beethoven is far superior.

Allergictoironing · 28/06/2025 08:48

They both have their place - time, audience & occasion depending. It's like talking about Kylie vs Led Zep - 2 very different styles, from different backgrounds & different times.

Sometimes the odd bit of frothy Mozart is appropriate, sometimes the majesty of Beethoven (though of his symphonies I think I prefer the lighter Pastorale above the heavier 5th or 9th).

But then again I have VERY eclectic music tastes ranging from prog, metal, pop, G&S, Bach, Vivaldi, Holst, Bruckner, Flanders & Swan.. Most things really depending on mood

Pianoaholic · 28/06/2025 09:13

I love the Pastoral symphony more than no 5 too. Think it's because no 5 is played so much.
I also love loads of different music, but Mozart just doesn't do it for me!

RumNotRun · 28/06/2025 09:19

I'm not as knowledgeable about classical music as some of you are, but my dad used to play us The Planets suite by Holst which I loved, and my all time favourite record is Peter and the Wolf by Prokofiev.

EmpressaurusKitty · 28/06/2025 09:23

I know absolutely nothing about classical music - does Carl Orff count? My dad’s favourite is Carmina Burana.

Pixiedust1234 · 28/06/2025 10:55

Congratulations to Grumpyoldpersonwithcats Jr!

I have to confess I also thought Ahsheeit beautiful boy was also TC. Hopefully they aren't alike in personality too.

Pianoaholic · 28/06/2025 11:10

Love Holst Planets suite. It's deservedly popular!

Gosh, Allergic, I'm exactly the same! Even down to all the music you've named there.
I've got a very wide range.

A few bits of Mozart are great.

About four, in my opinion, and they're all for voice.

Poor old Mozart! I agree that Beethoven is superior.

But I honestly prefer much, much later music - 20th and 21st century choral music especially.

Yes, very much so. I've sung in it, many years ago when we still lived in London.

Pianoaholic · 28/06/2025 12:57

It's one big choral work I have never sung. Did 12 years in a choral society before having children and we did loads of big choral works, but never Carmina Burana.

Allergictoironing · 28/06/2025 15:41

Unlike others here, I was actually told to mime but NOT SING under ANY circumstances when all the 1st & 2nd years at Grammar school had to be part of the choir at entertainments. I would never refer to my lack of tunefulness as caterwauling, as that would be unfair to cats.

But having been brought up by parents who were into classical music, and liked bands & singers contemporary to them (e.g. Ink Spots, Nat King Cole), I probably had a head start on my peers when it came to listening. Lunchtimes at school listening to the charts being announced (Tuesdays I think?) on a scratchy contraband radio introduced me to bands like Queen, all the glam rockers, Bowie etc. Then boyfriends into rock & prog.

So with over 60 years of listening to parents stuff then every genre that's come since, plenty of time to discover new styles I've liked

RumNotRun · 28/06/2025 16:10

@Allergictoironingi auditioned for choir in my junior school. They said I could join but was only allowed to sing certain songs, nothing remotely high. Clearly they were crazy as when I'm singing at home on my own in the kitchen, I have the voice of an angel. Honest 😬
