Well, the boys among them are making plans.

The lady cats are having a spa fortnight in Italy.

Bills for flights, accommodation, food, booze, medical insurance and legal fees (not to mention a fund for bribing officials at Ljubljana Prison) are allegedly being sent to an unmonitored email address.

I'm a terrible cat slave. I don't know any of their birthdays or their "Got You Days".

I give them that thinly sliced chicken that you can get in any supermarket. It's probably made from every part except the meat but they don't seem to mind. In fact, if the claw marks on my legs are anything to go by, they bloody love it. Toad frequently tries to climb me so he can get the chicken more quickly.

Pianoaholic · 28/02/2025 14:59

I don't know Herbie's birthday but we got him 2 years ago on mother's day and he was 2 then, so I suppose we will say he's 4 at the end of march!

Some potential news regarding Herbie's arch enemy Timmy-it looks like they may be moving! Herbie will need a new sparring partner!

To be fair I only know their birthdays because they are on their vaccination certificates.
Which reminds me that Basil and Sybil will be 14 on 3rd of March. 🎂🥂
Do we celebrate? Of course we don't 🤣.

Pianoaholic · 28/02/2025 15:06

Yes, I don't know if we adopted Herbie 2 years ago or rather, he adopted us to be his slaves!

Esgaroth · 28/02/2025 15:16

I mainly put it in the calendar for the kids. I'm not really much of an 'animal birthday' person but it's quite nice to give them something special to eat even if they have no idea why 😄 And you've got to keep track of their age somehow, haven't you?

Glad to hear that Herbie will be free to rule the neighbourhood unchallenged soon!

EmpressaurusKitty · 28/02/2025 15:30

Lucky Herbie!

Kitty was microchipped at some point. The contact details were long out of date but it meant the rescue knew her birthday. In our family, we’ve all celebrated my sister’s dog’s birthday for years so it’s only fair Kitty gets presents too!

I might see if the local farm shop can help me with a bit of chicken.

As long as whoever moves in doesn't have a ginger tom (No offence to Kettle though, he's lovely!)

Maybe the 50% of him that is white tempers his ginger side.

He has chased smaller cats out of the garden, though, so I think he's mostly just realistic about his chances of winning an encounter.

It's gone very quiet in here this week. I hope everyone and their cats are all safe and well. I don't seem to be able to tag Broon, fingers crossed she hasn't been put on the naughty step again!

I haven't! I've been good.

I've actually been busy putting music together for the afternoon tea club.

It's taken AGES. But it's finished now.

I know Gizmo's birthday is on his vaccination certificate, but I can't remember it.

The little demon got into the food cupboard, managed to open the bag of Linney's dry food and helped himself. He's absolutely not allowed it because it upsets his tummy.

Just waiting for the diarrhoea tomorrow............

Do you know, the only cat dates I do remember are the dates of all their deaths. Every single one of them, going back to 2016, when we had our first cat PTS.

But their birthdays? Nope.

I can just about remember our four children's birthdays.

DS1 is 39 tomorrow. I think. Yes, just after midnight on March 1st 1986 he emerged, weighing 8lb 4oz.

I only know date of birth as when we had her chip transferred to us it was on the info. She was 8 when we found her as a stray in our garden starved and eating the bread for the birds. The original owner did not update their contact info on the chip and could not be contacted by the vet or the chip company. Maybe moved as also did not respond to flyers we put up.
Original name was Gingerpops so maybe that why she ran away

Esgaroth · 28/02/2025 16:53

@Breadcat24 She's not even ginger! What a stupid name (ahem, Kettle is a very sensible name).

Kettle was named Bill by the rescue which is OK I suppose but we clearly wanted something more distinguished... Well I wanted to change it to Bilbo and DS wanted to call him Cornflakes but we all had to compromise 😄

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 28/02/2025 16:56

Linney was called Billy by his previous owner.

much better names all round.
There's the previous name and the happy cat name

RumNotRun · 28/02/2025 17:23

Raven was previously called Aphrodite. I think the goddess would have been most offended if I hadn't changed the cat's name. She's very pretty and affectionate (to people) but she's a bit more rotund and less dignified than I think the goddess of love would be.

stormsandsunshine · 28/02/2025 17:26

I discovered when I took my cats to be spayed that they have two official birthdays. The date on their vaccination card is not the same as the date on the vet's electronic record that they asked me to check just before they went off for surgery (even though it was the same vet that issued the vaccination card!)

They were rescue kittens who were discovered after the litter was born, so obviously their birthday would be a bit of a guess, but it's still a bit odd that the vet entered one date on one form and a different one on another. Do you think we have to get them two lots of presents?

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 28/02/2025 17:28

Sybil was named Bluebell by Battersea. That was a name that really had to go.
We meant to rename Karl and Lenny but never got round to it 😆

EmpressaurusKitty · 28/02/2025 17:31

Do you think we have to get them two lots of presents?

I’m certain they’d say you should!

We have the day Kitty moved in, the adoption day & her birthday but presents for all three would be a bit much.

I wouldn’t have chosen the name Kitty, but by the time I adopted her I’d already been fostering her for months & we were both used to it. She’s Kitty Bella Caramella most of the time anyway.

Breadcat24 · 28/02/2025 17:36

To come clean her actual name is not really relevant as

  1. she pays no attention to it
  2. I mostly call her Puski, or Pussy- Woo
yes it is a bit shameful, especially if I am yelling it into the garden
Pianoaholic · 28/02/2025 17:57

Herbie was originally called Blackjack at the rescue centre.
I suppose I should look through all the adoption stuff to see if he has an official birthday!

stormsandsunshine · 28/02/2025 18:00

On names: my Snowcat (which is her online alter ego, not her real name) was called Tubs when she was in rescue.

I don't know why, as she is quite a slender and elegant cat and not at all tubby. Maybe they just thought she was so pretty she didn't need an imaginative name to get adopted.

Her sister was called Teeny Tiny, which does make sense as she was the smallest in the litter and is still pretty diminutive.

HumanToCatBeasties · 28/02/2025 18:11

Boris and Matilda were called Peeta and Katniss by the rescue. I've never read/seen The Hunger Games and having a cat called Kat seemed like it might be confusing. I'd already picked Matilda for a girl and either Boris or Basil for a boy anyway. I decided Boris looked like a Boris once I'd met them.

I too am terrible at remembering their birthdays. I've just checked and they'll be 11 at the end of April. I gave up buying them presents years ago, because they didn't seem interested in toys anymore. With Matilda's new found liking for catnip I might have to get them something this year.
