I spent ages last night trying to think of this thread title.

Finlay is back in vet hospital again with bladder or kidney blockage they will need to keep him at least 3 days and may need surgery if it’s a kidney stone which is impacted - it’s a very bizarre coincidence as that’s what killed Reuben his predecessor last year - but we didn’t know what was wrong! At least this time I got him to vet hopefully early enough to sort him out - he is going to hate me if he’s caged up over Xmas again - I will update when I hear anything they are going to sedate him then catheterise before doing more tests

I'm sorry poor Finlay! Boris sends his best wishes after his stay in the vets for a similar problem last month.

TheShellBeach · 15/11/2024 17:20

Oh poor Finlay!
I hope this can be treated fairly easily.

The male cats on this thread seem to be going through a lot of urinary problems lately.

@JaceLancs best wishes for finlay

Esgaroth · 15/11/2024 17:30

Well done for taking him to the vet so early, you have good instincts. I hope it all gets sorted out and Finlay is feeling better soon.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 15/11/2024 17:41

Best wishes to Finlay from the Grumpy household - hope this gets sorted quickly and cheaper than Basil's treatment.

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 15/11/2024 18:01

Best wishes from Kitty & me too x

TheShellBeach · 15/11/2024 18:10

Linney and Gizmo send their best wishes to Finlay.

Thank you everyone
@HumanToCatBeasties how did Boris get on with the vets, what sort of treatment etc did they give him? Is it more common in any type of cats other than males - does anyone know?
Finlay is a wet food eater - prefers fish in jelly and small chunks so often buy kitten food
Do I need to try an indoor fountain to encourage him to drink more?

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 15/11/2024 18:34

@JaceLancs
Our vet thought that Basil would need to be operated on but the vet hospital just flushed his bladder repeatedly using a catheter. Bloody expensive but he really is back to normal and avoiding the operation meant no recovery time/cage rest. His bladder was full of crystals.

CatsonPollock · 15/11/2024 19:09

Sending hugs and 🩶🩶 to Finlay. Hope all goes well.

It was the same with Boris. They thought they had found a really big stone in his bladder, but when the surgeon redid the ultrasound they couldn't find it. Did the vet say that he would need to be on cage rest? When I asked them about recovery from the op, they hoped to have him home the next day and nothing was mentioned about cage rest, just a cone. I still have a pink body suit and soft yellow cone I ordered off Amazon for him. I was too worried to tempt fate by sending them back.

RumNotRun · 15/11/2024 19:41

Alizè had a recurring issue with crystals and peeing blood every time I thought he was getting better. The vet ended up cutting him open and scraping out his bladder (I think) as it was full of mucous 🤢 He had several operations and was skin and bone at one point. They kept warning me that he might not pull through. He did though and I had lots more time with him with no repeat problems after that.

I hope it all goes well for you and your boy too, as well as all the other male residents of Excellent Cats who are having urinary issues.

Pudmyboy · 15/11/2024 20:28

Oh no!!!! How bloody stressful for you and Finlay @JaceLancs : everything crossed for the best outcome for that very special boy!!🤞🤞🤞🤞

Papergirl1968 · 15/11/2024 21:36

So sorry to hear Finlay is poorly, @JaceLancs
Matt’s blockage was mucus too this time.
I know neutered, male, older and overweight are all at higher risk and Matt ticks all of those boxes, and stress is also a factor although Matt appears to be a very laid back cat unlike neurotic Socks.
Vet has advised us to have a Feliway Optimum plug in and to increase his cystaid from one to two.
I also mix a bit of water into his meals, and let him finish off the milk in my cornflakes bowl as he doesn’t really drink water from a bowl except when it’s very hot.
You might need to put him on urinary cat food too.

Kettles glare is brilliant but I am in love with cat four.
These threads are brilliant. All the beautiful cats including gizmo and the grumpies. Picard linney shady paws, all of Rums and Finlay, Benny.
Everyone of them actually.

Walter is slightly put out that he was missed but annoying little brother Benny included 😂

Sorry for your loss. Will you get another? I was brought up in a dog-loving cat-hating family but I'm totally a cat person now. Will never be without one!

coastergirl · 15/11/2024 22:27

@JaceLancs sorry I hadn't seen your post about Finlay! I hope he's quickly on the mend. I do worry sometimes that I wouldn't know if my boys had these issues because they choose to toilet outside.

JaceLancs · 15/11/2024 23:07

@coastergirl Finlay is an outdoor cat and although he does have an indoor litter tray he hasn’t used it for months - it has to be very cold with heavy rain for if to be even considered
I just felt he was not himself, off food etc which prompted me to take him to vet
Thank you again for all your good wishes
Vet rang earlier to say he was coming out of sedation ok and catheter was draining well but they want to monitor him over next 2-3 days

learieonthewildmoor · 16/11/2024 02:12

Good luck to him, JaceLancs.

LostCats · 16/11/2024 09:05

Oh no! Poor Finlay! Sending much best wishes from Eko and Boone! 🐾

Wickedstitch · 16/11/2024 09:30

@coastergirl
Please apologise to Walter, he is also very beautiful 😁
Would love another cat but we live on a busy main road now and can't build a catio as garden is down very steep steps.
My tuxedo boy was so loving and like my shadow, he lived to 17 and had a great life. He was a rescue.
If my circumstances change I would definitely be a full on cat lady. My sister always says when I am old I will probably wear a cape and smell of cat wee. Cheeky mare haha.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 16/11/2024 09:50

Our walnut tree is full of parakeets this morning and Karl has spent the last ten minutes talking to them. Thought this one was a particularly photogenic NMP.

Vet rang to say Finlay is a bit too lively this morning and quite stressed - pulled out his catheter and got tangled up in IV fluid tube, they can’t decide what to do with him at the moment!
I am worried they are going to send him home too soon and he will be just as stressed here and withhold from peeing as he wants to go outside - on the other hand I’m too scared to let him out as can’t keep an eye on him and can’t get him back to vet if I can’t capture him
He is a very young active cat - on the lean side and mainly eats wet food - they said his kidneys seem ok, found no infection or stones or even crystals and just keep saying it could be stress!

JaceLancs · 16/11/2024 10:22

He’s not normally stressed in fact he’s quite laid back and chilled unless you lock him in!

Papergirl1968 · 16/11/2024 10:31

I don’t know what is best, @JaceLancs
i think my instinct would be to have him home but it’s the not knowing if he is going outside to wee that’s the problem.

I'm really jealous. We don't get parakeets where I am in the Midlands, magpies are as exotic as it gets in my garden. What a beautiful bird.
