TW Cars hit cat in front of me

Hi. Just sharing as still shaking to bits with fury and the awfulness. And to ask any experience with this situation. Cat is now at vet, alive.
Not my cat. Driving home. Saw white cat on road in opposite lane. Stopped, put hazards on, all kids in car. Went to get out. Two more cars drive by and BOTH hit the cat. Worst thing I've ever witnessed. Tossed him. I was screaming with rage at this point at the carelessness and callousness of the drivers. It was a 30. No way they didn't see him. I pick him up and he's warm and breathing.
I'm freaking out from witnessing it and yell at a nearby man to help. He shrugs 'probably won't make it anyway' and won't. I call him some things and he goes nuts. I get in car and hand cat to my mum then try dialling 24hour vets. Near impossible to find one. Finally say they'll call me back and find me one 20 mins away. I don't even hear the directions as so freaking out but get to town somehow through tears and to lovely vet
Readers, he has no fractures but his pupils are pin prick not responding properly. He had blood in his eyes.suspects head trauma. Neutered male. Vet will look for chip and call owner and said call in morning to find out what's what. Said we'll have him if no owner.

Honestly one of the worst things I've ever experienced. I'd like to hunt down those two drivers and pulverise them.

Is there any hope for him.

FFS @uhOhOP - there's always going to be one tw#t and it's you.

BanksysSprayCan · 18/09/2024 07:45

Well done for rescuing him. 🤞 for a good outcome.

uhOhOP · 18/09/2024 01:37

Is it possible that where you stopped your car prevented the drivers from taking evasive action? Either way, perhaps hitting the cat was the least worst of all the options.

ODFOD!!

ODFOD!!

The pp does not deserve this. It’s perfectly reasonable to point out that stopping on the road can be dangerous and that the wrong reaction to animals in the road can be dangerous. And the pp expressed herself in a sensible, straightforward way.

If someone or an animal suffers because a driver has decided to act wrongly about a cat in the road that would not be something to applaud.

Stickytreacle · 18/09/2024 08:33

Well done OP, eleven cats here and I'm sure your introductions will go fine, you've done your research. 😊.
As for names I'm m an advocate for a new name for a new life, it means there are no negative associations with it.

With wandering I often find that if you keep them in for a good length of time and ensure they are happy and comfortable then yhey are less likely to wander. You could also consider a catio or cat proofing an outside area if you are concerned
Some of my ex ferals won't leave the house
Enjoy your new assition, he sounds lovely. 😊

Stickytreacle · 18/09/2024 08:33

Apologies for typos 😩

FuckThePoPo · 18/09/2024 08:42

Ah good luck op and I will look forward to lovely pics of Dougal.

I was told on my driving lessons to hit small animals rather than endanger human life which obviously makes sense but blimey it would be hard not to swerve instinctively wouldn't it

Carouselfish · 18/09/2024 10:04

@uhOhOP No, I was well up ahead of him. Watched him get hit in the wing mirror before I could get out of the car. It was an empty 30mph two lane road, just those two cars coming on the opposite side and me on mine. They could have swerved.

To be totally fair to the second driver, he was so close behind the first one, he wouldn't have had time to. But, neither of them stopped and he flew up in the air so they would have seen that.

Some people are just arseholes where cats are concerned OP, thankfully there are people like yourself who do care about them. I'm glad you were there to help x

OK. Trial basis begins Thursday. Been watching a million videos on acclimatising two cats to each other. Very very slowly with smell not visuals for a long time it seems.

So excited for the little kitty and for you! Hope the introduction goes smoothly!
Can't wait for pics!!

And @uhOhOP Way to derail the thread: it is clear from the original post that the OP parked safely as she had her children in it, and has clarified she did not affect the ability of the other drivers to avoid the cat

Thank you for the kind messages by the way. Very appreciated.
Do any of you have experience introducing a new adult cat to an existing one? And/or with a cat who was a wanderer? Wondering if that's just who he is or if it's something that changes.

Take him. You were there in his time of need for a reason. Your other cat will get used to him. He will love 💕 you for taking him in. I can't believe someone could be so heartless as to relinquish him to the vet.

Carouselfish · 19/09/2024 00:31

Utility room done. Three good hidey beds and ways up onto bookshelves and counters. L-shaped room so litter tray not near sleeping and eating. Feliways plugged in, one per cat room.
Now just agonising over names. Got to see which suits him I suppose.
In other news, my elderly collie seems to have gone a bit weird. Wandered out of our garden - it's only moderately fenced as middle of nowhere - was calling him for quite a while before he reappeared. Never done that before. Also keeps staring into empty kitchen in a slightly scared way which is very creepy! Hope feliway not having an odd effect on him. Or just senility creeping up. No more unsupervised basking on the lawn for him. 😪
Cat tax tomorrow!

That sounds a bit like doggy dementia for your collie. Poor baby 😥

Pudmyboy · 19/09/2024 12:16

@Carouselfish Excellent news! Though sorry to hear your dog is not himself - I hope it isn't serious (maybe a bit constipated or UTI?)

Carouselfish · 19/09/2024 13:20

Well he got out of carrier straight into lower deck bed and hasn't stopped purring. Just having lunch with him. He isn't scared or shy.
Vet says reactions much less slow, eating and toileting Well! Hooray.
Family name input, got about 15 contenders but
Pumpkin
Angelo
Cornelius
Are the top.

Cat tax for all you lovely people. Can see his injury on his jaw here but otherwise fine and dandy.
