TW Cars hit cat in front of me

Hi. Just sharing as still shaking to bits with fury and the awfulness. And to ask any experience with this situation. Cat is now at vet, alive.
Not my cat. Driving home. Saw white cat on road in opposite lane. Stopped, put hazards on, all kids in car. Went to get out. Two more cars drive by and BOTH hit the cat. Worst thing I've ever witnessed. Tossed him. I was screaming with rage at this point at the carelessness and callousness of the drivers. It was a 30. No way they didn't see him. I pick him up and he's warm and breathing.
I'm freaking out from witnessing it and yell at a nearby man to help. He shrugs 'probably won't make it anyway' and won't. I call him some things and he goes nuts. I get in car and hand cat to my mum then try dialling 24hour vets. Near impossible to find one. Finally say they'll call me back and find me one 20 mins away. I don't even hear the directions as so freaking out but get to town somehow through tears and to lovely vet
Readers, he has no fractures but his pupils are pin prick not responding properly. He had blood in his eyes.suspects head trauma. Neutered male. Vet will look for chip and call owner and said call in morning to find out what's what. Said we'll have him if no owner.

Honestly one of the worst things I've ever experienced. I'd like to hunt down those two drivers and pulverise them.

Is there any hope for him.

Oh sorry I was careless there 😳

Julius is a good strong name

I’m so glad you saved him.

NobbyNeighbour · 16/09/2024 19:00

Oh bless you…..will you have to pay the vet bill if you have him? Is that feasible? Can’t believe the owners have relinquished him, can’t understand people. I think you sound a great home for him.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 16/09/2024 20:27

Oh golly, what a tough decision. You sound amazing and it would be a wonderful outcome for that poor cat to have a chance at a better life but obviously costs have to come in to it❤️

Well done for your kindness and compassion, there are not enough people like you in the world.

I swerved a little for a flipping kamikaze squirrel yesterday! I did check my mirror first and there was nothing behind me, just a squirrel stock still in the road in front of me and I just couldn’t try not to hit it! It was fine, it made it safely to the bushes at the side!

BiscuitlyBoyle · 16/09/2024 20:35

Ooh. Could you contact a local charity? We have some lovely ones near us. They might be able to offer some funding or be able to find him a permanent home if you don’t think you can take him.

Spenditlikebeckham · 16/09/2024 20:38

You are The Chosen One. Congratulations on your new Boss op.

AprilShowerslastforHours · 16/09/2024 20:45

Set up a GoFundMe. I'll contribute.

Ah no, the aloof one is our resident girl, Velvet!
I've sort of named him (Orange) Julius in my head as he is actually a gorgeous orange and white.

Well, now you have named him......need anyone say more?😻

Pudmyboy · 16/09/2024 22:45

(however I can understand if it looks like it's going to be too expensive to have him, sadly. Wild random thought: if the vets are keen for you to look after him, would they offer any discount on any treatment for conditions likely to arise from the accident?)

Carouselfish · 16/09/2024 23:36

We wouldn't have to pay for anything he's already had. However, am not clear if they've done an MRI and would imagine they'd need to, They want to keep him a few more days anyway. Again, at their cost. If he deteriorates...surely they'd MRI?
It's more the unknown future costs if he has odd issues later. And whether we'd be spoiling Velvet's life or adding to it! We are just flip-flopping back and forth. If I knew he had a lovely home lined up, I wouldn't fight it, purely for the unknowns we'd be taking on, but not prepared to let him end up in a shelter.

Thank you for the kind messages by the way. Very appreciated.
Do any of you have experience introducing a new adult cat to an existing one? And/or with a cat who was a wanderer? Wondering if that's just who he is or if it's something that changes.

@Carouselfish many thanks to whatever deity for people like you. I almost vomited when reading your first post. A friend's cat was deliberately run over too; a neighbour saw a van rev up and took the details - including the identifying details re company. Upon being challenged, driver initially denied and then shrugged and said 'it's just a cat'. I would have gone ape sh*t but seems he got away with it.

NobbyNeighbour · 17/09/2024 06:14

he might not wander from a new home where he’s loved.

Carouselfish · 17/09/2024 20:12

OK. Trial basis begins Thursday. Been watching a million videos on acclimatising two cats to each other. Very very slowly with smell not visuals for a long time it seems.

I would contribute too.
Thank you for doing what you've done and looking after him. How anyone can leave an injured animal
Is beyond cruel.

Can you keep us updated on this post please, 🙏 Hope he gets through this, poor little guy:

I’ve got friends who are introducing cats at the moment. It’s been over 3 weeks now and they have only just seen each other through a small gap. Very controlled.

Roryno · 17/09/2024 21:24

Aw I just want to say you’re a superstar! Fingers crossed. It would be realistic to say if complications arise later on and it’s going to be beyond your finances, that you quietly pts knowing you gave him his best chance. But hopefully he’ll be fine. I think he’s allowed to look a little shell shocked after all he’s been through.

SoulMole · 17/09/2024 21:33

Aah. This happened to me in 2002 when I was in my early 20s, and I can still remember it so awfully. I've never gotten over it. I don't believe that cat was so lucky. Amazing you're giving him a home. Good luck.

duckydoo234 · 17/09/2024 21:58

Guessing you're a woman and other drivers are men. What the angry one meant was "you're the woman, this is for you to deal with". Also, since you were in a panic, you were "Karen", i.e. you were showing emotions that made the man uncomfortable, and therefore it was completely okay for him to shut you down. Not his problem. Don't you realise, saving animals is women's work. WTF did you think a man would give a shit?

Carouselfish · 18/09/2024 00:04

@duckydoo234 Don't know sex of drivers. Man on scene was definitely a man, but neither of us were that polite TBH! It did have a vibe of 'what are you so worked up about?'.
You're all very kind and I will absolutely keep updated as well as photos on Thurs.
This makes our household two children, two dogs, two cats and five fish. I think there's a meme about this somewhere.
Retired vet neighbour being very helpful re. advice. Watching Jackson Galaxy on youtube.
My DM thinks his name is lovely as same as newly found ancestor. I'm not THAT keen but could live with it if unkind to change it? Otherwise Dougal is now the frontrunner.

Carouselfish · 18/09/2024 00:24

@SoulMole yes, the not getting over it was a big one of our pros for having him. We'd always wonder what if, otherwise.

Such a wonderful thing that you've done - taking him to a vets, plus giving him a home ... he's a lucky chap. Take things slowly, hopefully just a few months from now the pair will be best buddies.

spikeandbuffy · 18/09/2024 01:22

Some cats often settle very quickly
My friend had 4, then adopted another 2
Last month she found a tiny kitten stuck in the under tray of a car. I mean what's one more..

she brought the kitten home, the dog immediately decided this was her pet thanks very much and they've been inseparable since

My other friend adopted a kitten as her cat woke her up at 4am by dumping it on the bed with a "here, I'm off back out"

uhOhOP · 18/09/2024 01:37

Is it possible that where you stopped your car prevented the drivers from taking evasive action? Either way, perhaps hitting the cat was the least worst of all the options.

MelainesLaugh · 18/09/2024 02:20

It’s so lovely you’re taking him on. Good luck!

XMissPlacedX · 18/09/2024 03:53

You are a lovely person op, how lucky he is to be coming to live with you.
