Cat pinched and ate a food today I didn’t expect her

She’s normally one for begging when we have meat based foods such as chicken. I will happily toss her some chicken too especially Chinese chicken.

Today, I had a chippie. I ate all the sausage so when I finished eating but had chips left, I didn’t think much of it. Cat jumped up, sniffed a chip…the pinched it and ate it.

Granted they are cooked in beef dripping from this particular restaurant but I didn’t expect her to eat it

Cheddar tried that.she likes pasta and bread. 😂

Sparklfairy · 07/03/2024 14:48

Mine used to perch on the worktop (not used for food, this was the dining part of the kitchen diner) behind me. I went through a phase of having a coffee and a doughnut.

Quiet as anything, she'd lean over my shoulder and swipe the doughnut out of my hand. She'd also take any opportunity to dip her paw in my coffee. She was weird.

Current cat loves pringles so I can't buy them anymore.

They have no shame 😻

samthebordercollie · 07/03/2024 15:06

I had my cooked broccoli on the worktop and was staggered to see my cat (who is normally just mad for meat) take out a spear and ate it.

Ezzee · 07/03/2024 15:08

My sadly missed old boy loved cheese and onion crisps!

ivowtotheemybiscuittin · 07/03/2024 15:11

Gingernuts likes apricot swiss roll and his brother is partial to yoghurt and ice cream (separately).

AnnaMagnani · 07/03/2024 15:13

One of my cats will always finish our dinners.

If I cook something vegan I'll tell her 'you are not a vegan cat' and she'll give me a look and start eating.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/03/2024 15:14

Cats are buggers for stuff they're not supposed to have.

Mine have in the past liked, chocolate cake, apple cake, Pringles. Current one sniffs if I show it to her... and on the whole unless it's veggie, she likes it.

I tell mine the same re vegan/veggie and she gives me the look (we all know 'the look!'.

They all like milk based products.

Mine loves Greek yogurt, cheese, ice cream, cheese sauce (home made by me). But these are definite treats. She'd eat it all if I let her.

My obligate carnivore growled at me over steamed green beans. Not even any butter involved.

Isn't it the salt/flavourings in crisps they like?

Two I had years ago went mad for some sort of olives - not the olives but the herbs they were in - it must've been similar to catnip we thought... it was from the deli counter.

My old boy loved poppadoms. Would order him one whenever we had Indian take out.
I miss him.
My wee ginger boy will try anything. If I put down a finished plate, he will lick it clean regardless of what was on it.

joangray38 · 07/03/2024 15:22

My old cat used to love yum Yums.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 07/03/2024 15:23

My cat is weird. I could leave fresh fish / prawns or chicken on the bench or on my plate (or even in his bowl) and he wouldn't touch it.

He does quite like licking the odd crips (when offered) or some toast crumbs. He also likes the foam on a cappuccino. He's never actually pinched food ever, though.

StoneColdAlibi · 07/03/2024 15:24

Mine loves melon and baked beans and recently polished off a serving of fried mushrooms. Strange thing.

Aww this is so sweet ❤️

Fraaahnces · 07/03/2024 15:25

Mine used to love them with vinegar. She’d scarf it down and wince when the found particularly tart spots.

I suppose in a cat's mind - "why should we have to put up with boring old cat food and the odd mouse/rat/bird when our humans have much more tasty stuff on offer - which they should of course share with us - or at least offer it to us!"

Before I got cats (I did have a childhood cat but we had dogs and other small pets as children) I didn't think cats begged. Boy, was I wrong on that score!

Glittertwins · 07/03/2024 15:29

Ours likes coffee cake batter!!

DCat2 did exactly this yesterday. Maybe broccoli is fashionable among cats at the moment?

Catname · 07/03/2024 15:59

Over the years, and several different cats, in addition to your bog standard meat and fish thievery, we have had to protect:

Cheese
Salt and Vinegar Crisps - no other varieties
Caramac bars
Thorntons toffee
Brewers Yeast tablets
Bran flakes
Brocolli - raw
Peppers
Tomato
Scones
Bread

One of the current incumbents can be trusted to try to eat most foods and sits and begs DP for the last of anything on his plate irrespective of what it is - he knows better than to try to beg from me as he doesn’t get anywhere. He’s solely responsible for the last 5 items.

Far more mundanely, a previous cat was uninterested in virtually all food and kept herself to herself, but could never be trusted if fish and chips from the chippy were in the house. She would be on top of you if she could and her paw had to be pushed off the plate several times by the time the meal was finished and she was given her share. Wasn’t interested in any other fish, just the stuff from the chippy.

VeryQuaintIrene · 07/03/2024 16:01

My old sortie Iris would bite through tin foil to get to any sort of baked goods.
