Can I show you the boy we’re going to see tomorrow?!

Here he is - Barney https://www.animal-action.org.uk/?page_id=20. Look at the life he’s had 😢 I’m so excited, I’ve been thinking about getting another one for a while. Hopefully our 10yo will take to him once she’s allowed to remain Queen Bee - she’s hardly a clingy cat anyway. And hopefully he’ll take to us when we met him tomorrow!

DS6 has decided he’s going to be renamed Reggie…

@mehday She's looks like my girl Vixen who is ridiculously affectionate but also full of tortitude. Most torties are.

mehday · 21/08/2023 21:30

She’s very affectionate. I thought I had a tortie as a child but it turns out she was a calico. So it’s new ground for me!

'Tortitude' Grin

What's the difference between calico and tortie @mehday ? I thought calico was just the American term for tortie? Every day's a school day!

mehday · 22/08/2023 09:03

Apparently it’s when they have white on them, my girl had a white tummy.

CatChant · 22/08/2023 10:51

I do love a tortie. The cleverest, cuddliest, most affectionate cat I’ve ever had the privilege of living with was a tortie, and they have a special place in my heart because of her.

Having said that, I am very fond of tabbies too. I hope little Reg is still adapting to his new home and family. With his horrible background it would be surprising if there weren’t a few teething troubles.

ComputerInitiateJump · 22/08/2023 16:13

Aww Reg. I really feel for him. Cats are stubborn buggers but usually come around eventually. They might not be destined to be best pals but in time should start to rub along together OK.. without the need for hissing! I wonder if putting some catnip or dreamies around him would make him more attractive to the other cat?

TheHorneSection · 22/08/2023 19:36

Thanks! I’m pleasantly surprised how accommodating existing cat has been (she’s a Calico!) so I have high hopes for the future. He’s still very scared of noises and sudden movements, understandably. But I’m certain he’s going to get there.

Pria had a lovely evening last night, ventured out into the kitchen and sat with the teen. This morning she ‘helped’ me with a Teams meeting in her room but then this afternoon she hid and refused to come out for several hours, I don’t know why.

She seems not to like the door to her safe room being left open, we thought she might like to know it’s OK to come out.

She is a bit more settled again tonight but is firmly staying in her room.

mehday · 22/08/2023 20:13

I like the advice to catnip up Reg!

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 22/08/2023 20:16

Pria will get more confident.

TheHorneSection · 23/08/2023 20:30

Slowly slowly getting more confident around us…

Is he getting better at using the litter tray @TheHorneSection

TheHorneSection · 24/08/2023 08:10

So far he is, but he’s a messy boy shooting litter everywhere so we need to try and get him to use an enclosed one.

Sadly and rather annoyingly in terms of her positive integration into our home, Pria peed on our bed yesterday evening. Nobody was there so she wasn’t being over-stimulated or scared that we know of (11 yr old can be a bit full on).

I did wonder if she was marking because I had changed the bed that day.

Anyway, cue washing the duvet and everything else and today having a day with all the bedroom doors shut. She likes to roam upstairs in the evenings but I don’t want to risk it.

Does anyone have any experience or advice?

TheHorneSection · 27/08/2023 08:24

I’ve not really got the experience but as Reg is still occasionally rubbish with the litter tray we’re keeping him mostly in the same rooms as the moment as he gets used to the house. I bought some stretchy fabric baby gates which I’m using to partition off bits of the house - he roams more during the day when it seems he’s less likely to poo.

Cats who toilet inappropriately often respond to small granule litter like ultraclumping or sand texture.

The poncier talcum powder scented ones go down well ime. The ones that are really expensive. Cats like you to make an effort with this sort of thing.

The first time my Bengal had to use wood pellets at the cattery he flicked his poo around his pen in protest. Despite this the cattery owners were smitten with him and went on to get bengals of their own.

Ooh not sure what happened there- should've been several grinning icons.

Tom ( asleep on my lap) probably corrupted it with thought waves.

mehday · 28/08/2023 22:27

Well we’ve made it through two days without any further mishaps. She already has fine litter of the clumping variety, as I tried to match what she was used to.

I was impressed today that she popped downstairs to use her tray and then came back up to her new favourite spot under the spare bed.

Rather like a baby with a fresh nappy she likes to use the tray the minute I have disposed of stuff.

mehday · 02/09/2023 21:51

@TheHorneSection How is Reg doing?

We are two weeks in so one more week and she can go outside, thank goodness. The house is so stuffy and it’s going to be hot this week…

We are starting to let her roam around the house at night and when we are out. She has a few favourite places, including some windowsills as she is very keen on what’s going on outside.

TheHorneSection · 02/09/2023 21:57

He’s doing pretty good, thanks! Having spent 5 years inside we’ve got a long way to go with him before he can roam the house and go outside. But he’s in DD’s bedroom and appears to worship her, they’ve bonded really well and he sleeps on her bed with her every night. He’s still very skittish as he isn’t used to people wandering around, and we’re still struggling with poos not always in the litter tray. But given his background he’s doing well.

Good luck when you can let her outside!!
