Allergic, I am always delighted to see a post about Tobias' progress.
He reminds me of my Buster.

Our DD adopted a cat with a similar background. A stray who was anxious. It takes such cats ages and ages to settle in.
Tobias is doing so well.

Love that look of intense concentration! And Allergic, Tobias is doing so well with you

nettie434 · 02/06/2023 17:45

Morticia has got an amazing floofy tummy! Shady looks very much at home and Tobias is clearly settling in too.

Helloooo, handsome!

Allergictoironing · 03/06/2023 21:23

Managed to very briefly touch a soft tabby bum today, with no hiss. Somebody had extra dried chicken strips for that.

Well done, Tobias!

Supersimkin2 · 03/06/2023 22:33

He’s stunning, bonfire.

Havelock ran in this evening, smacked a miniature Yorkshire pudding out of my hand, and ate it on the terrace.

I cannot be cross.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 04/06/2023 07:46

Shady is definitely a very handsome chap 👍.
And I'm also most impressed, and very pleased with Tobias' progress.

As for Havelock... 🤣

Florissant · 04/06/2023 07:54

Well done, Tobias, you sweetie.

Havelock, you are very naughty.

Had a chat with Ruth from Rolvenden last night, mainly as a progress update on Tobias. Apart from a discussion on how great Celia Hammonds are, and how she thinks she knows who @Thecatneuterer is (she didn't say, but the TNR activities and the household full of cats they couldn't re-home rang a bell with Ruth), she told me a little more about Tobias's background.

Though they didn't rescue him until he was about 2, based on the area he came from, the "usual" reason for strays there, and his general behaviour, she reckons he was "yet another from that estate" where the parents get a kitten, then when it starts to grow up they throw it out as too much cost & hassle.

I agree with her that seems very likely. He would have been very striking as a kitten, and he's clearly spent time in a house in the past, but he wasn't neutered or chipped. Possibly the children manhandled him and he scratched; that seems likely to me as well as he does tend to swipe when he'd anxious.

Just makes me even more determined to give him the best life he can have, to make up for his past.

I've got one of these. Either that or she was returned to the shelter because her first owner had a precious crystal ornament collection s/he was fond of.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 04/06/2023 09:56

Despite Saki, I sometimes do wish they could talk.
My first cat, who just decided to move in with me, was a gorgeous, extremely street wise, intact Tom cat who was built like a brick shit house. Amazingly friendly, never sprayed or smelt bad at all. He only formally became our cat when (after visiting all day for months) he disappeared for a few days and then turned up injured. Took him to the vet who treated him and said we needed to keep him in for a few weeks. When I told the vet that he wasn't our cat the vet responded that he was now because we'd got the vet bill.
He was so well mannered he must have had an owner at some point, I would have loved to have known his story.

To be fair anyone who traps ends up with a house full of unhomeable and unput-backable cats. I've no idea who Ruth is :)

Allergictoironing · 04/06/2023 11:09

I gather she recently took in a mother & kittens from your group as you had literally no space from them. Rolvenden is down near Benenden in Kent, if that helps, down a track next to the aquatic centre?

It is more likely to be something to do with Lewisham or the sanctuary if it's in that neck of the woods. I'm with Canning Town

christmastreefarm · 04/06/2023 12:06

Ruth is lovely! (I don't know her but my parents have got cats
from her) and my sis volunteered there for a while.

Yes it's in rolvenden by the aquatic centre.

Allergictoironing · 04/06/2023 12:52

Ah well, whoever it is she's very complimentary about both them & Celia Hammond in general.

@christmastreefarm she's great isn't she? Clearly adores every cat that goes through her gates, and makes a lot of effort to match the right cat(s) to the right adopters. I love the permanent residents wandering around there too. When I picked Tobias up, apart from paying her a typical adoption fee (not the much smaller amount she suggested to me) I took down a load of towels and toys for the cats, and a big box of assorted chocolate bars for the volunteers.

From what I understand she takes in the cats many other rescues won't accept for various reasons, and spends as much time as they need before re-homing them.

This photo simply does not do justice to just how much greenery is currently stuck to Lenny.
Bloody scruffy Herbert 🤣.

A happy scruffy Herbert! Look at that look of bliss and the happy tail!

Allergictoironing · 05/06/2023 13:23

Obviously hinting that he likes a good grooming, and hasn't had enough offered lately. So he got himself in a state where you would have to give him the attention & brushing he desires. BAD cat slave!
