So I was woken this morning at 5:30 by the sound of baby hippos galumphing around downstairs playing pounce and chase. I lay there listening to the joyful sounds of 2 cats seemingly very happy in each other's company.

Eventually driven out of bed by the demands of my bladder & looked down the stairs to see a tabby back end with wiggling bum & twitching tail half in the living room, which suddenly froze when he felt my eyes on him. By the time I emerged from the loo he was on the windowsill in his bedroom, and when I next looked he was on the bed and slinking into his igloo.

So it's becoming clear that their issues are all about me. He has to stay put in his room when I'm about or Girlcat chases him back in there, plus I think she's been telling him horror stories about the evil witch who owns the house they are imprisoned in.

Ahh! Congratulations @Papergirl1968 !
How lovely!
Elsie-Mae is a beautiful name 💕

Defiantlynot41 · 25/04/2023 09:20

Congratulations Paper, great news!

And Allergic, that definitely sounds like progress. Our two (litter mates, 17 years old, never been separated) are still jealous of who is sitting on whose lap, even if there is a lap free they still fight over being on the same one!

This picture shows both in a rare truce (and yes, they are VERY different sizes!)

Congrats 🥳 Paper and DD - Elsie’s one of those be-anything sweet names, Mae is gorgeous (and royal - Queen Mary’s nickname and I don’t think she’d put up with the MN eyebrow).

That must be such a relief @TheShellBeach how is it going? Poor little girl.

Allergic- frolicking kitties!! The sweet music of dawn!! Darling Tobias is going to be so happy.

Allergictoironing · 25/04/2023 12:08

I am on the duty call line today, so any of the young people (YPs) we look after who can't get hold of their advisor for any reason (on hols, off sick) call into the central number that I'm womanning. I usually spend duty days in the office, but today we couldn't get any desks for our team so I'm at home - where because it's just me & quiet kitties I don't bother with a headset (unless neighbours are drilling or bashing, not uncommon).

So right in the middle of a call from a YP (who was mumbling, in a strong accent) kitties decided to play chase up & down the stairs as noisily as they could. They NEVER do that when I'm in and awake, as you all know from previous reports.

Of course now there's a reasonably quiet patch in calls, they've both gone to their respective beds to sleep 🙄

I feel sorry for Pebbles too. Proof you shouldn’t be able to register a name until baby is 6 months old & the oxytocin’s worn off a bit.

nettie434 · 25/04/2023 12:47

Congratulations to you and your daughter, Papergirl1968. I think Elsie-Mae is rather sweet. The only thing that can be said in favour of Pebbles is that at least there won't be any confusion with other people having the same name. Wasn't there a young woman in New Zealand who 'divorced' her parents because she thought they'd given her a ridiculous name? The nice thing about cats is that you can indulge yourself with choosing your favourite name. I have a friend who over the years has given her cats grand names like Phoebe or Hermione. She only has sons so she channels the names she likes onto the cats!

Papergirl1968 · 25/04/2023 12:53

Thanks everyone.
Pebbles! 😂

Allergictoironing · 25/04/2023 13:30

Pebbles was probably named after The Flintstones child?

HouseofHolbein · 25/04/2023 17:24

Pebbles is such a lovely young woman. She has babies of her own no idea what they are called probably jack and Jane in protest 🤣🤣

There is a rather good chance that a certain upstairs male cat has had a poo in the downstairs litter tray today.

There seems to be more than Girlcat usually "does" in a sitting, it's much more scattered than usual (he's a real digger, she just buries), and there's a small but distinct textural difference in some of the bits. Her pee is also normally just in one wet patch (under a pile of pellets) but today I don't see any even though she'd been drinking the usual amount. And though I haven't yet cleaned his this evening, it looks much less dug over than usual.

In turn, I think she may have been snacking from his kibble bowl. He's very much a wet foot cat, she's more for the dry with wet being a bit of a treat meal. But his has gone down a fair bit over the last day or so, whereas hers doesn't seem to be going down quite as much as usual.

I look on this as a VERY positive step 😀

I am loving the Tobias/ Girlcat updates.

Supersimkin2 · 27/04/2023 09:46

That’s the most loving update ever esp the scatological study. Very deftly done Allergic.

Little darling ‘Two Trays’ Tobias, so brave and good.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 27/04/2023 10:00

Never ceases to amuse me that we 'cat people' can get so excited about our cats' toiletting habits 😹.
Being serious - your latest update sounds very positive Allergic.

Allergictoironing · 27/04/2023 19:03

Years of having horses in the past have made me pay plenty of attention to pet's poos. They are among the best indicators of an animal; being off colour. Plus especially with indoor cats you can't really miss their doings as (unless you're very unlucky) they are always lurking in the tray just waiting for you to come along with a scoop & bag. Unfortunately many people really don't get reasoning behind the obsession.

I have now touched his tail 4 times without any hissing or dabbing of claws,

OP posts:
Supersimkin2 · 27/04/2023 23:34

4 tail touches! Yay.

To be honest I don’t get the poo talk personally. Blame a highly competent gag reflex, especially while catching up with the tail talk at brekker.

LostCats · 28/04/2023 07:36

Argh!!!
DH was away. So Eko decided to catch 2 birds in quick succession. By an act of God I saw him both time he headed at the cat flap at speed. So he ate them outside. And there are now bird pieces all over the steps. So that’s disgusting.

Took Boone to the vet yesterday as his tummy is massive now due to the steroids but he is so much happier off the gabapentin and his tail is even lifting and he’s chatting again!!
Anyway I digress.

Appears the gods have taken ill against Eko as he now has a massive swelling under his jaw. He can’t even eat it’s so sore.
So I’m off to the sodding vet again today I reckon! It’s an abscess isn’t it. Argh!!

LostCats · 28/04/2023 11:57

Well that was expensive. Sodding cats 😆

Have to go back on Monday to check the abscess is healing. Lovely vet said it is a bad abscess and gave him morphine even!
However he hasn’t read the memo that he should be feeling strange and is now chasing bees. Hopefully the morphine will make him run crooked so we don’t have to go back for a bee sting 🙄🙄🙄

What is it about cats that they always develop something serious out of hours or over a bank holiday?
Every. Single. Time..

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 28/04/2023 16:29

Had a delivery today and I left the packaging on the table to recycle later. Sybil has other ideas.

TheShellBeach · 28/04/2023 16:45

DS (adult) came to visit a few days ago and Emerald decided she liked his bag.

Last time one of ours had a huge abscess (Poodlegate) it was over a bank holiday.
Bloody cats...

Supersimkin2 · 28/04/2023 19:16

Every time. Mr C collapsed without fail on my birthday five years running. Could barely afford celebratory glass of water.

Boone must be feeling so much better - smart move, girl, you dodged a bullet there. Abscesses on face get nasty. Morphine most pleasant. He is now set for a magnificent bank holiday which you might get to share 😀

Supersimkin2 · 28/04/2023 21:13

Anyone noting this awful pic - please note my pet on the upper floor above my benighted neighbour.

He’s been up
and down all
week
via drainpipe which is all of 6 foot high, if that. Fence about 5 foot jump from
upper balcony.

Mewing for help for hours. Won’t come down.

Thoughts?
