Help me think of names for cats to keep to hand for when I'm short of inspiration

thecatneuterer · 28/01/2022 22:04

I have to name dozens of cats a month. Any cat I bring in to the rescue that is for homing (as opposed to neuter and return) needs a name. I'm really running out of ideas.

I'm looking for names that aren't actual people names - and preferably that are normal nouns with a nice sound and no awkward connotations.

For example, Puddle and Truffle. They don't need to end in 'le' of course - although that does give a particularly appealing sound I feel.

Any suggestions?

I've always called my cats 'cat', but in another language. So I've had...

Gato. Cat in Spanish
Korshka. Russian
Neko. Japanese
Paka. Swahili

Apparently, there are over 7,000 languages!

ThisMustBeMyDream · 29/01/2022 01:15

My cat came with the name baba. Seriously... what was that rescue thinking Confused.

We once had a cat called RumTum(Tugger) from Cats. There's plenty of names there to go for Grin.

Other suggestions: Peaches, harmony, melody, happy, calamity, topsy, merry, popsy, allegro, vivace, treble, echo, major, maestro, wibble, dibble, bumble, scrumptious... might come back with more tomorrow Grinq

colours in various languages?

Why not people names? Our rescue cats came named Dave and Helen......

Fireworksatforty · 29/01/2022 09:08

I've already picked out my next two cat names! We have a 10 year old lady at the mo and wouldn't introduce any more while she's here as she's an only cat and would like to stay that way. Next two will be called Katsu and Cosmos.

violetbunny · 29/01/2022 09:46

Cupcake, Muffin, Cookie
Squish, Squiggle, Squeak
Bear, Bunny, Bumblebee
Koala, Kanga, Roo

TroysMammy · 29/01/2022 10:02

I know you said no human names but my cat was one of three kittens. They were named Maurice, Barry and Robin after the BeeGees. He has a different name now so maybe pop singers/groups.

Chocolate bars Snickers, Galaxy, Bounty, Whispa, Twirl.

Marmite, peanut, apple, sprout, lolly, ovaltine, horlicks, ribena.
Seasons, months, days of the week.

hivemindneeded · 29/01/2022 11:49

Why no people names? They are so much easier!

Food is good: Cookie, Biscuit, Pickles, Chutney, Peanut.

Where do you work that you get such an influx of cats. Round here there are hardly any that need rehoming.

thecatneuterer · 29/01/2022 12:05

Thanks all. Some great suggestions. I'm putting a list together.

To answer a few questions: @hivemindneeded The Canning Town branch of Celia Hammonds. For every cat we take in there are probably another 20 that we have been asked to take in but don't have space for. The problem here is huge.

Why no people names? Just because, firstly, they've all been done to death and, secondly, it's easy to find lists of them for inspiration if you want to go down that route. I'm hoping for more original names.

Why can't we use the same names again? We can and do. I just get bored of seeing the same names going round and round. And if, a year or so later, someone contacts us about problems they're having with 'Oreo and Peanut' for example then it makes life so much more complicated as there are so many of them. I'd like the cats I name to be a bit more unusual so that, if it comes up, I know it's something to do with me and can get involved.

Names that are used over and over are: flowers, herbs, spices, trees, planets and all foodstuffs, particularly biscuits and sweets.

And I don't want anything in foreign languages or which isn't an easily recognised and easily repeated word as that causes problems when people are trying to remember the names of cats they've seen on the website to enquire about them.

And I can't really have anything too out there. If I named my next ones Potency and Impetus @FelicityBeedle people would think we had lost the plot entirely Grin. Although I am still really tempted by Broccoli Highkicks .....

As I said I'm going to make a list and expect to see them on a website near you soon Grin

The ones on the website currently named by me are Sirius (I was truly lacking inspiration and have done the stars/planets thing loads of times); Gilbert (again, very dull and oft repeated); Puddle (which I like), and Bramble and Nettle, which I also like and describes where they were found and are just nice words in themselves.

Sometime when we take cats in from people who have already named them but can no longer keep them for some reason then we keep the name. However if it's another Loki, Nala or Simba then I just can't bring myself to use it and so change it (the cats don't know the difference).
