Help me think of names for cats to keep to hand for when I'm short of inspiration

I have to name dozens of cats a month. Any cat I bring in to the rescue that is for homing (as opposed to neuter and return) needs a name. I'm really running out of ideas.

I'm looking for names that aren't actual people names - and preferably that are normal nouns with a nice sound and no awkward connotations.

For example, Puddle and Truffle. They don't need to end in 'le' of course - although that does give a particularly appealing sound I feel.

Any suggestions?

Vegetables
Carrot, broccoli, cabbage, onion, kale etc

british Cities
Bangor, Cardiff, Cambridge, London, Lancaster etc

Wouldn't be obvious if you're using one of the names. And there's a Bonus using both names for twin cats 🤣

Boris, Johnson, Theresa, May, John, Major, Tony, Blair, Winston, Churchill, Harold, Macmillan, Antony, Eden, Edward, Heath etc

British Rivers
Sever, Thames, Trent, Wye, Tay, Clyde, Tweed etc

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 28/01/2022 22:37

Ok, themes you haven't used (probably)

Greek Gods
Genuses of insects (Latin names)
Norfolk Broads
Villages in Cumbria (or your county)
American states
Capitals of American states
African countries (I'll stop there with geographic ideas)
Nobel prize winners (of each science...)
Pultzer prize winners
Surnames of British monarchs
Numbers or colours in other languages (Italian, Russian, etc)
Spanish foods

Eloraa · 28/01/2022 22:44

Oh god now I desperately want cats called Garibaldi and Lancaster.

Go through a paint chart for relevant colours? For instance Farrow and Ball whites give you Dimity, Wimborne and Joa.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 28/01/2022 22:44

Musical instrumemts?
I'd love a cat called Theramin, Theorbo or Zither.

lljkk · 28/01/2022 22:46

Wool, weaving related, shoe making, etc -- nods to English textile heritage:
Cord, Tweed, Worsted, Serge, Whipcord, Garbardine, Walsham, Silky, Satin, Linen, Flax, Hemp, Spinny, Weave, Warp, Quilt, Mohair, Camel, Vicuna, Cashmere...

thecatneuterer · 28/01/2022 22:47

Theramin - brilliant! Definitely using that. Zither too!

As I said themes aren't necessary - although handy for kittens. But generally we're talking about single cats. I'm just looking for appealing words.

@AliasGrape Believe it or not I've already used the majority of those I think.

Not Magenta though, and that's a lovely name. That's going on the list.

@thecatneuterer

I did once name a load after fishing areas: Viking, Forties, Cromarty, Dogger, Fisher etc. However it wasn't a great success as most ended up misspelled and mispronounced and generally caused confusion.
'Dogger' may not be the best 😂
