Kittens tend to learn how to use the tray from their mothers, it's instinctive with them to bury their leavings. If yours isn't using the tray be sure that you are using the same litter as wherever you got him from, the tray is easily accessible for a tiny kitten, and that you have at least a couple around the place. If he goes elsewhere, try moving the tray to that spot.

Don't have it near the food or water - some people seem to like to have a "cat station" where everything for the cat is in one place, but they really don't like doing their mess by their food!

WowIFreelStrange · 10/05/2018 09:34

kittens are so easy to train and will 'train themselves'

put a low open box on the floor. kitten will smell it and go straight to it. And keep going back to it when she needs the toilet. once kitten is old enough for a boxed litter tray buy one of those. :-)

good luck

WowIFreelStrange · 10/05/2018 09:35

I'd also say have 2 boxes. one upstairs and one downstairs. Just until he's trained. May only take a week. it took my litter of 4 from DCat a week to learn.

user1492621884 · 10/05/2018 11:06

Every time we put him in he just jumps out!
He's weed countless times on the sofa and poohed on the floor.
He won't entertain his basket just sleeps on the floor behind the sofa in the day and at night he sleeps in the downstairs bathroom atm and he sleeps behind the loo!!

Make sure you clean the accidents with either biological washingnpowder or white vinegar and bicarbonate of soda- gets rid of smell for you and discourages cat from returning. Cleaning with anything with ammonia makes them want to do their business there again.

POPholditdown · 10/05/2018 11:11

Is he always going in the same place? Are you able to move the tray to where he is going until he gets used to it?

Was he litter trained at his previous home? Are you using the same litter?

Just incase you are, don’t use bleach to clean the area as this attracts them to the spot.

(Sorry if this sounds like the Spanish inquisitionGrin just helps to see if it’s stress or other factors)

user1492621884 · 10/05/2018 11:26

Yeah pretty much, the sofa seems to be his favourite choice 😂

Yeah using same litter, have moved the litter tray to different place in the day and just keep putting him in every so often.

I know he's only a baby bless him but want to discourage piddling on my furniture!

Oh and it doesn't look like he's drinking but he must be if he's weeing?
He's eating a mix of wet and dry kitten food 4 times a day is that enough for him? A 1/3 of a kitten pouch and 10g of dry food?

Can you keep him away from the sofa for a few days? If you reduce the size of the area he is in so he is always near his tray he will probably get the hang quicker then you can gradually reintroduce other rooms.

POPholditdown · 10/05/2018 12:48

When we got our first kitten, she started to scratch and squat on a rug and I quickly put her in the litter tray before she managed to pee. Apart from medical reasons, thats the only time we had to help her.

Could you try to intervene that way when you notice him scratching?

If he does another poo, you could try to scoop it and put it into the litter tray so he can associate the smell with it.

Also, try putting some cat biscuits near the area he is weeing, this will hopefully discourage as they don’t like to have their food near their toilet.

He will be getting moisture from the wet food.

It is likely just stress from being in a new place. Does he come out at all or is he spending most of his day behind the sofa?

user1492621884 · 10/05/2018 13:17

Thank you for all your advice!

He comes out a lot, he's so playful and happy bless him! Meows a lot purrs a lot too.

He's in the downstairs bathroom at nighttime with litter tray food and water and his bed in there, and we put him in there when we have to go out on School run. Luckily I work when my partner is off and vice versa so he's never alone for hours at a time. He hasn't weed anywhere yet that isn't the sofa!

As soon as I realised this morning he was going to do a poo I took him to the litter tray but he was already mid flow 🙊

Many cats don't like to pee/poo near their food. Try litter tray in the bathroom and food in the kitchen.

Obviously at night you are going to have to put them with him but try to put them as far away as possible.

Oh and where is the compulsory picture?

EachandEveryone · 10/05/2018 16:06

Bless him his mother should’ve taught him how long have you had him? Maybe they were separated too soon. Does he sleep
On his own in the bathroom? Mu Be necee uses a bed but I did keep them in the bedroom only for at least two weeks and they did everything in there so they weren’t overwhelmed.

Any photos??

user1492621884 · 10/05/2018 16:25

Here's the little cutie! He has managed to poo next to the litter tray so we are getting there!
I've just got some kitten litter to see if that makes a difference and moved the food to kitchen as well.
Had him 3 days so far, he's 9 weeks tomorrow!
Thank you for your advice!

He is lovely!

Glad he’s getting closer to the tray Grin

user1492621884 · 10/05/2018 17:08

He's gone for a nap now in his usual spot behind the sofa!

Is it common for kittens to come alive at night time! He was still being scatty at 1030 last night racing around chasing his tail (that every time he thinks is a new toy)😂

OP posts:
Want2beme · 10/05/2018 17:18

He's a cutie pie and looks like a whole heep of troubleGrin.

Is it a kitten litter tray you've got? They find it much easier to climb in and out of a small tray. That might help.

He won't like his toilet next to his food. Likewise his food next to his water. They like it all to be separate.

Get him a little blanket or teddy to snuggle up to, and cover your sofa with a few rubber bottomed bath mats or a mattress protector - not very attractive, but it's something until he stops peeing there.

Has he got a cat tree to disappear up high to?

Good luck.

user1492621884 · 10/05/2018 18:03

Yeah it's a kitten litter tray it's tiny!
Ooh didn't know that about food and water I'll move the water from the food thank you 😊
He has a blanket and teddy but isn't interested yet!
I've put some puppy pads on the sofa now and got some odour spray to go on sofa. The lady in pet shop said they don't like the smell!

I just caught him squatting behind the curtain so picked him up, put him in litter tray and shut door for a bit. He's meowing like CRAZY and making me feel awful Confused

POPholditdown · 10/05/2018 21:44

Aww he must be struggling to find his way. If it doesn’t sort itself, you could try feliway. Some say it helps with stress.

Did he eventually go in the tray?

Do you know his history? A pp could be right he may have been separated from his mum too early

user1492621884 · 10/05/2018 23:31

He hasn't been in the tray yet 😞

He's in the bathroom with all his comforts and I've even put some calming kitten music on my Bluetooth speaker on Low with my tshirt with him. He was meowing like mad but has gone to sleep by the toilet again!

Feel like I'm failing him the poor mite Sad

Feliway I've just been looking at that is it any good?

Apparently they said he went a bit in the tray but not much. There were only two kittens survivors from Mum cat.
