Puccini isn't well at all

Fine yesterday , brought me a shrew first thing but didn't eat his breakfast and hasn't eaten since and can't tempt him with anything.

More worryingly he's been curled up in his basket since lunch time and can barely muster up a purr when I stroke him let alone any opera singingSad

I'm taking him to the vet first thing.

I'm sooo worried about him Sad

Yes, dry food is always in the bowl - shared by all friendly neighbourhood cats and a small hedgehog, apparently! Then the three boys get one pouch of wet food between them morning and evening, with a good sloosh of water mixed n with it, though the moderate calorie is wetter than the normal stuff. Dog licks the plates afterwards. I sometimes feel I spend more time feeding our animals than our humans!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 24/09/2016 20:51

Shall I try and get some water in the side of his mouth with a syringe , he's good at letting me clean his teeth usually.

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/09/2016 20:55

If you clean his teeth does he really need the dry food?.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 24/09/2016 21:00

Probably not, I only gave it to him as I thought it was good for urinary health HmmSad he loves a good crunch but I can just give him raw beef for a chew.

I would probably try to get some water into him to flush his system through, whether through making a tuna soup or similar, or syringing in - apparently (found this out recently after many years of owning cats where it never came up!) cats are desert animals that most of their liquid requirement from their food, and don't drink that much, hence the crystals problem. How I never knew this before, I have no idea!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 24/09/2016 21:08

I'll give the syringe a go x

Wolfiefan · 24/09/2016 21:09

Hope he will take it.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 24/09/2016 21:15

He took two syringes! I've turned the light off and he's tucked back down to sleep now. He's much more relaxed tonight and curled up nicely not hunched up like he was yesterday.

I give mine cat soup, and sloosh the pouch out with some water, and add that, because cats aren't good at drinking. Their main food is Applaws or Orijen

I think raw chicken necks are OK for cats as they're made of cartilage if he likes a bit of a chew.

I've not heard good things about Iams, perhaps replace with the 2 that I mentioned above? Or a wet diet?

I'm happy he's home safe and sound with you. Wishing him a speedy recovery from the MantraCats and me.

Vinorosso74 · 24/09/2016 21:35

Poor Puccini. My last cat had bladder stones and an infection, he was a sorry state but bounced back after a few days. He was a bugger to get the antibiotics into tho.
Good he's taken some liquid, hope he's better and singing again soon.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 24/09/2016 21:39

They injected him with anti biotics which will last 28 days. I'll talk to the vet tomorrow about the pain killer and if I can give it to him via syringe instead of on his food. Just dug out the insurance, really hope they pay out... gulp!

We used metacam. Fairly certain that was a syringe. (That was before old girl ended up on tramadol!) I know what you mean about the hunched look. Really glad he's more comfortable.

Potentialmadcatlady · 24/09/2016 21:59

Metacam is what I use if one of mine is having a flare up of his problems- it's ungoing and he's life limited so vet happy for me to keep it in house for when he needs it...I put it in a 'special' bowl over a couple of dreamies and he licks it all up..

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 24/09/2016 22:05

He's just had 4 syringes of watery cat soup, lapped it up! He refused any more so will try the Metacam later. He had a bum lick ( poor thing!) but managed to distract him and he's asleep again now.

Going bed now I'm exhausted, hopefully tomorrow he'll be brighter.

Met am comes with a special measuring syringe. Both my girls have had it that way. They are very good with it.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/09/2016 22:42

Or mix it with lik e lix

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 24/09/2016 22:45

Toddler- straight into the mouth not with food?

OP posts:
Mistoffelees · 24/09/2016 22:58

Metacam! That's what ours had, and yep straight in mouth after food as he refused to eat the food if we put it on. Good idea to syringe some liquid in, sounds like you're doing him the world of good! Outs is now on Macs, Granatapet and Ropocat bought from the Happy Kitty Company, all more expensive than supermarket stuff but they are pate style which he likes and I can mix water in easily and it has the occasional chewy chicken heart for him too!

Toddlerteaplease · 24/09/2016 23:06

Dame, yes straight in. They are really good with it. I even managed to get tablets down them. The hardest part is trying to catch them. Though one of them is quite easy. The giving of the medication is the easy bit.

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/09/2016 23:17

I mix metacam with a small amount of food.

RubbishMantra · 24/09/2016 23:36

I administer metacam through through the gap between fangs and molars, like you're doing with liquids Dame. It should come with a little syringe (no needle obvs.)

Grooming is a good sign of feeling better.

I hope Puccini and you have a good night's rest - an exhausting and traumatic time for you both. x

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 25/09/2016 06:38

Morning!!

Up at 5am and he wobbled out of his basket to come and see me and wait to go out the front door! I directed him back to the litter tray and he used it straight away, seemed ok . I put some food down and he had a sniff but want interested so he went back to his basket and I gave him watered down cat soup and Metacam from the syringe which he took with no problemsSmile

I can't get the other stuff into him yet to change his pH balance in his urine but not too worried about that as the main thing is drinking.

He let me groom him with his brush and he started purring REALLY loudlyGrin

He's gone back to sleep now.

He smells a bit funky, combination of vet and puking and weeing , shall I wipe him down with a damp flannel later?

OP posts:
Fluffycloudland77 · 25/09/2016 08:16

I would yes. Sleep will help too.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 25/09/2016 09:00

Ok thanks, I'll give him a little rub down later. He got up again and wanted to go out but gave up pretty quickly and just went back to bed. His eyes are bright again though and purring loads if we stroke him. If he doesn't eat tonight I'm taking him back to the vet tomorrow.

Please tell me that child parenting is less worrying than cat parenting!
