The litter tray

I seem to have acquired a cat

I didn't like cats but then I turned into some kind of cat whisperer with my neighbours cats trailing after me and feral cats jumping in my lap
I have gone to the dark side and reserved a cat from cats protection Hmm
He's black and has FIV as well as being a flu carrier so he will be indoor cat. Obviously no sane person was going to take him. So yes, I'm off to buy half of the pet shop

I'm on nights so I let him nap on the bed with me earlier Grin
He trails me constantly especially if any sign of food, or packaging or cutlery
Hopefully this might ease?! See also constant head bopping and need to sit on me 24/7

He is very gorgeous isn't he?!

Little bit of his history found out. Apparently he has spent most of his life as a stray, living in a cold greenhouse with some other cats and was fed by an old lady

Poor sod must have been freezing in winter. He'll need his heated throw on 24/7 to make up for that.

Who needs a heated throw when you have a human to drape yourself on?! GrinHmm
I just hope we can sort his sneezing out

How did I miss this thread? He is gorgeous! He looks like a more normal version of DM's cat, George (who has major issues). I'm so glad he's got the loving home he deserves

How is the sneezing doing now?

Still sneezing. I have a vague thought that antihistamines may be worth a go. Couldn't sleep last night and was running things through my head... I'm wondering if the cat flu might have some allergy related or triggered something like rhinitis?
This is the bit about him

It's possible, but I think I'd be inclined to give the original meds a few days longer to see what they do. (Particularly as he might have a 'challenged' immune system.) Remind me what the vet dosed him with?

Is his sneezing just that or is it accompanied by snotter?

Report
goodasitgets · 26/10/2015 10:19

Periostat? It's doxcycline basically
There is a bit of snot when he sneezes and he gets clear bubbles out his nose! Never sneezes when he's sleeping

Ach. Difficult one.

You've had him nobbut a minute after all and although he's had a rough life and ended up with a challenged immune system, he's only a young cat. (To me at any rate!)

I'd be inclined to liaise closely with his vet but to see how things go for a little with some good food and heat. (Lots of heat.)

Seniorboy has shown regular symptoms since he was about 17 - which is, I suspect, due to him having an old and tired immune system - and although he has regular ABs, both his vet and I dislike their over-use. It's just that we're now into pallative care for him and we know what seems to work with him. You don't really know that yet for Ollie.

How is he otherwise - eg teeth, digestive system, bones etc? It's just that if any animal has a dodgy immune system, you need - in my view - to be on top of anything that might also be a drain on it.

Everything else seems absolutely fine. Except for refusing to eat his food this morning (it's got antibiotics in!)

Sardines are good for giving crushed up tablets as the strong smell seems to mask the taste. And Shiphams fish paste or similar is good for giving whole tablets as it's sticky and the tablet can be easily hidden inside a little ball of it.

On the other hand you could do the open the mouth and shove the tablet down the throat method.

Eating now. I'm a mean mum and mashed some chicken in with the uneaten food Grin

Jabs on 3rd November so will chat with the vet about ongoing flu treatment Smile
He refuses to eat liver which helpfully needs to be 5% of a raw diet Hmm
So the plan is applaws pate once a day to cover that, then the rest raw as he likes most other stuff

I think you and that vet are going to be on first name terms soon!

Just to add, I think I'd probably try Seniorboy on probiotics if he was any younger, despite the expense. (Having seen such good results myself from the human version.) Might be worth seeking the vet's view?

Yep worth having a chat with them I think! I don't mind as long as it keeps him well, no bills to pay and he doesn't mind going. Although he looked a bit surprised to come home after the last trip

I wouldn't have minded that, my last vet was hot Grin

Love the stories of Ollie :)

I could never let my cats sleep on my bed either as they used to attack my feet every time I moved in my sleep, so I'd wake up with needle sharp claws embedded in my heel Hmm :o

His latest thing is before he uses the litter tray (and after) he sits by it, with his front paw very delicately rearranging and covering. None of this kicking litter about Confused
