Need urgent advice for a tiny kitten!

I've rescued a kitten who has been rejected by it's mum. It was one of two, Mum took the bigger one and never returned. Poor little thing was calling for her all yesterday and it broke my heart keeping my distance but today it started to go very quiet and shakey so I've taken it in. I know nothing about kittens no idea how old it is (fits easily into my hand, massive eyes and ears, very skinny wobbly legs that look a bit too long for its little body). I've given it tiny drops of milk from a syringe (sp?) prob takes 1ml at a time before it starts to refuse. What do I do (mostly regarding feeding but other advice would be much appreciated)? Live abroad so no shelters or rescue homes so I'm on my own with this one.

Are there new photos already? Sorry rip. Sad

3littlebadgers · 09/05/2012 18:34

Good day to you all. Thank you all so much for you continuing support Smile. Coco is doing well. All bodily functions functioning and as cuddley as ever. Desperately trying to get life and house back to normal but very hard to resist her pleas for attention. Have put up a few new pictures of her. Does anyone notice a difference in her? I know it is hard to tell from a picture but I am so hopefull she is out of the woods and it is hard not to be biased and lets be right I have sod all to compare her with apart from the moggies that hang around the bins.

Awwwwwww! I think she looks better in the new photos, she looks so content asleep on the red/white/black fabric things, and chasing whatever the pink thing is - she looks like she's holding her little tail up, which must surely be a good sign?
Bugger getting your house back to normal, you have a newborn to look after and she won't be this tiny and squeaky for long! wonders if you could wash up while carrying a sleeping kitten in a baby sling

stinkyfluffycat · 09/05/2012 18:57

Oh and what are you feeding her? Did the vet recommend something?

SecretNutellaFix · 09/05/2012 18:59

She looks stronger in the new photos and definitely not frail like she did in the first one of her standing.

She is gorgeous.

squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

3littlebadgers · 09/05/2012 19:16

Yey thanks ladies! Grin Red and black material is my dress and the pink thing is her toy mouse. She is spoilt rotten!
Still on the milk de goat but she is taking upto 10mls now and giving her the occasional bit of the mixture Pinot suggested as she is still bunged up a bit. Her poor botty still looks sore and swollen and I'm tempted to pop a bit of sudocreme on it. Would it do her any harm?
When can I play dress ups should I pop a collar on her? Smile

Deffo sudocreme. She is sooooooo cute, well done you.

Fluffycloudland77 · 09/05/2012 19:44

The next mumsnet book should be on kitten rearing.

Sod rearing kids, this is much better.

She might be a bit young for a collar, you dont want her getting caught on something.

mycatsaysach · 09/05/2012 19:47

lovely pics

LST · 09/05/2012 19:57

Awwh 3 she is a little beaut Smile

ripsishere · 10/05/2012 07:28

Those are newer new photos. Apologies to anyone I told wrong yesterday.
She looks like she's in lovely condition. All shiney and alert.
My only issue with the sudocrem would be her licking her bum and swallong some. Can you get vaseline?

Pinot · 10/05/2012 08:23

I'd make a solution of salt water to soothe her bum. I don't think she could reach to lick her bum at this age as she's still unsteady. But with one of mine, salt water solution really soothed her infected leg. Use a cotton bud to apply it and a fresh one each time :)

No collars yet - she's too small - fluffy is right.

So pleased she's doing well!!

Good morning all! Why is my cat going to the toilet without my say so Hmm and what the flips do I do now? Bleeding kittens go through the stages fast don't they? Potty training anyone?
My little girl told the cats in the bins that we have a little baby witchy cat at home and DS2 was tring to coax it onto the mop handle this morning Grin.

Is it too soon for a litter tray? Can you even get cat litter over there?

Love the new pics. Grin

LST · 10/05/2012 13:19

Oooo. Pooing without the rubbing? Great stuff!Grin

I have no good advice on toilet training I'm sorry except get a litter tray and keep putting them in it. It didn't work with the kitten I raised. And it took until he was 10 weeks old and I had acquired another stray, (A female who had lost her kittens) to teach him Hmm

LST · 10/05/2012 13:21

But it did work with my other 2!

(sorry forgot to add that bit)

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 10/05/2012 13:22

So glad she is doing better, yay coco!

SecretNutellaFix · 10/05/2012 13:28

litter tray training!

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 10/05/2012 13:32

I hand raised 3 kittens 20 years ago now so I expect they are no more Sad

But it was very knackering rewarding. I had them from 10 days old. I used to groom them with a toothbrush Grin

when they were about 6 weeks old and completely bonkers I rehomed them. I worked at a rescue centre and that's where they had come from.

The owner of two of them saw me in the car park a few months later and I got to see them all grown up. It was lovely, I would do it again in a heartbeat.

My DH hated cats. (he is a bit allergic) but I used to come home to find him sitting on the floor with them all crawling over him! They converted him to a slight cat lover Grin

I love kitten stories. It's the weaning onto mashed up food that's the funniest. I remember mine just diving in it and then flicking their feet about!

Glad to hear your kitten is thriving
I want one!

3littlebadgers · 10/05/2012 13:41

Might bob back to the pet shop where I forced them to watch me rub my kittens arse and see if they have anything suitable Blush. Is it just like potty training a toddler? God help me if it is! Righto off to google potty training for kitties.

3 You need the following:

a shallow kitten litter tray, this is lower than a standard one so they can get in and out
wood based cat litter. Not normal litter as she may well play in it/eat it and wood based will pass through without damaging her.

From now on, every time she does a wee or a poo using kitchen roll, put the wet/dirty kitchen roll into the litter tray. She will then associate the smell of wee and poo with the tray. She should then go to the tray when she feels a wee or a poo.

I found this bit v easy - both of mine literally did it within a day or two and we've never had accidents. Try to keep her limited to close by the tray during this time so she can get to it easily.

LST · 10/05/2012 13:56

Pinot you are a cat raising goddess! I failed miserably with litter training my boy. He's brill now. But like I say it was not down to my skills of being a cat mum Sad

Pinot · 10/05/2012 13:58

LST I was a bit trapped in the lounge for a few days with them, but we'd just moved into our new house with posh carpets and I was determined they weren't going to wreck our new place. Plus it helped my kids were at school in the day so they had my full attention.

I think I was just reallllllly enjoying mummying them :) !
