Need urgent advice for a tiny kitten!

I've rescued a kitten who has been rejected by it's mum. It was one of two, Mum took the bigger one and never returned. Poor little thing was calling for her all yesterday and it broke my heart keeping my distance but today it started to go very quiet and shakey so I've taken it in. I know nothing about kittens no idea how old it is (fits easily into my hand, massive eyes and ears, very skinny wobbly legs that look a bit too long for its little body). I've given it tiny drops of milk from a syringe (sp?) prob takes 1ml at a time before it starts to refuse. What do I do (mostly regarding feeding but other advice would be much appreciated)? Live abroad so no shelters or rescue homes so I'm on my own with this one.

Good morning Coco! Hope the trip to the vet isn't too traumatic. But don't do what my cat does and scream for the entire journey. I'm not sure your mummy would be thrilled with that!

How's little coco! I've been thinking about her all night!

DP wants to know too Grin

Pinot · 08/05/2012 11:58

Naw, thanks 3 Blush

How is Coco today?

3littlebadgers · 08/05/2012 12:10

Good day to you all. Sorry to have kept you all waiting this morning has been a hectic one. Been to the vet with the kitten and he is pleased enough. Said she is very thin and will need worming when she has put on more weight. Is that because she is prob too light to take the medicine? I thought that the worms would stop her gaining weight. She is still a bit bunged up but at least we know wat she can do now.
Also been to the Hosp with DS1 and he needs grommits poor love.
Warm washcloth advice has been noted and also I would quite appreciate any advice on when she should start solids. The little scamp always has a nibble of my fingers when they have her dribbled milk on them.
Righto lots of english lessons today so must dash but just wanted to fill you all in.

She can start solids from 4 weeks onwards, though they tend to wean at their own pace so don't rush things. My girl kitten took to it OK but the boy took ages and was a real worry.

I would stick with milk as it's nice to digest for another week or more until she's put on lots of weight.

How often are you feeding her now?

ripsisherethecheekycunt · 08/05/2012 13:30

Awwww, lovely.
I am really soppy about your little kitty. I loathe my own two and, TBH am looking forward to moving so I can return them to the CPL.

ExitPursuedByABear · 08/05/2012 15:58

Oh yes - I remember Ginger's reluctance to move onto solids.

Wormers can be quite aggressive, probably why he suggests waiting until she is stronger.

My spaniel was borderline between 1 & 2 tablets last time he was wormed so they gave him two. Jeeps - I have never seen so many piles of sick on the rug, and never realised how much the colours of my rug were similar to dog sick, until I stood in a pile. Confused He then ate nothing for five days.

Glad to hear she is doing OK.

I just read this from start to finish......crying here over the kitten who couldn't poo! Great to hear she is doing well:

3 you should be so proud of yourself, you will have a friend for life now:)

Sparklingbrook · 08/05/2012 16:33

Vet trip (was it a 2 hour trip), hospital visit and then English lessons. 3 you are brilliant.

Glad the vet said he was pleased with Coco. Smile

ripsisherethecheekycunt · 08/05/2012 17:48

Blush I would like to keep one, but the grey one can go and bury himself. He is the reason they are collectively known as shittens or shats.

stinkyfluffycat · 08/05/2012 18:15

Oh so glad she's pooed and the vet is happy with her - I've finally let myself have a look at the pictures now and she's soooo cute!
Does she still have fleas? I think when kittens are tiny you need to watch out for fleas because tiny ickle fluffy squeaky kittens don't have very much blood in them in the first place as if fleas over - feed on them it's not good...

3littlebadgers · 08/05/2012 18:32

Hello just a little catch up before my final English lesson this evening (grown up one - yuck). My supposedly poorly little kitten is either seeking revenge for me being busy today or she has had a sudden bust of energy. She keeps standing up on her hind legs and whacking me with her paws before bitting me. I can sort of cope with the batting but the bitting, after all I've done for her Hmm. The children think it is hillarious and keep calling 'Coco attack!' Also she was out on the balcony with me while I was hanging out the washing and some tissues blew out of our bin and she toddled over to investigate. My DH said she was ready to join her friends in the bins Grin she is a Turkish kitty alright.

Grin

Sounds like she's on the mend!

3littlebadgers · 08/05/2012 18:36

Oh Stinkyfluffycat sorry I was meant to write that I picked the fleas off of her and haven't seen one since but the vet gave her powder for the fleas. I am meant to dampen her rub the powder into her in the opposite direction to her fur (not her head) wait for twenty mins then wash it off. Does it sound safe? the tube looks terrifyingly toxic! He said I can used it in the house too.

Trust the vet, 3 :)

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/05/2012 18:42

It's what they do to their litter mates and mummy. You da mummy!

I picked fleas off our cat using tweezers and no more came back.

LST · 08/05/2012 20:13

Tweezers and cellotape to stick them too afterSmile

LST · 08/05/2012 20:13

The fleas not the cat obviously Hmm

ripsisherethecheekycunt · 09/05/2012 07:07

[satisfied] at update. She sounds as if she's going from strength to strength. Well done you 3.

Sparklingbrook · 09/05/2012 07:56

Is it time for a new photo?

ripsishere · 09/05/2012 08:02

Good shout Sparkling. New photo please.

ripsishere · 09/05/2012 08:05

Blush just seen a couple. You are a bad person sparkling. Causing me to be a sheep and bleat about stuff that's been done.

stinkyfluffycat · 09/05/2012 10:46

Really, though, with a kitten this tiny we need a daily photo don't we?

3 flea stuff always does look really scary - toxic if you read the label, but if the vet recommended whatever he's given you I guess it's ok. One flea can lay about a gazillion eggs so even when you think you've got them all they tend to re - appear if you don't treat them to feast on your kitten and your ankles.

ripsishere · 09/05/2012 14:08

You should really use it. Especially as you've said your DH isn't keen. He'd be less keen if the fleas of a thousand kittens infest his groinal area.
