Buying an ex breeding dog..

Eeehbahgum · 23/08/2025 22:15

have seen an ad for a kc registered ex breeding bichon
i rang the breeder today and was told that she os really friendly , likes other dogs and people. Been in car etc , part of family not kenneled.
she is low energy.
( often bichon s can be )
I asked why the sale? (£800) and was told that they are hobby breeder and they cant keep all their dogs as they need new ones to
keep breeding and domt have room for all the older dogs.
they put it like - its her turn for her own sofa now. I know that due to
k c rules she cant have more litters.

really don't want a pup.

they assure me that she is a v easy going dog , house
trained. . i am concerned that she has lived her life with other dogs - thus wont she feel the loss of other dogs ( they say no she loves human fuss! Or have separation anxieties as she is used to never being alone ?

i am allowed to go and spend time with her , stay locally and re visit her the next day . But i cannot test of she will be anxious as outlined until she is in out home. Any ideas about this please?

Ive done this a few times with both cats and dogs, and its always been a really positive experience.
They are usually a lovely nature (a good breeder wont breed from a bad tempered dog/cat) and they absolutely love having fewer animals around and more attention and fuss.
I would go and spend some time with her and see how you feel. I find they usually bond to me very strongly and settle quickly. Mine have always been pretty bomb proof as used for breeding and showing. Good to have all the health tests and medical history too.
Hopefully you fall in love and have a lovely new family member!

tabulahrasa · 23/08/2025 22:27

IMO that’s what shitty breeders do, get as much profit as they can out of a bitch and then sell her on… and I wouldn’t be giving them any of my money.

Good breeders keep their dogs - and they’re not overrun with them because they breed sparingly and carefully.

If you don’t want a puppy, it’s fairly easy to find ex breeding bitches in rescues, it’s where they get dumped if they can’t find someone to buy them anyway.

katmarie · 23/08/2025 22:30

So because she can't have litters any more she's out? Does that sound like an ethical breeder to you op? By buying this dog you are lining their pockets and enabling them to basically dispose of a pet once she is of no breeding use. What a horrible way to treat a dog. No way in hell I would fund someone who treats animals this way.

Wolfiefan · 23/08/2025 22:32

Only a shitty breeder would do this.

PInkyStarfish · 23/08/2025 22:36

Just my personal experience but the ex breeding bitches I have met that have been adopted are all lovely temperament but all suffered with coprophagia.

Apparently something to do with keeping their litter pens clean they eat the puppies faeces.

LandSharksAnonymous · 24/08/2025 07:03

‘KC rules say she can’t have more litters.’

So she’s been overbred.

No. She’s a shitty person and you shouldn’t pay her for a dog she doesn’t want.

Do let us know how many other bitches she has. Something tells me it’s more than two.

IchLiebeDeutscheSchaferhunde · 24/08/2025 08:00

Do you have link to the breeding kennels?

My money is on a puppy farm sadly

Breeders are greedy and in my opinion immoral. Not a chance I'd line their pockets.
We have an ex breeder dog who was no longer useful to them. Via an animal rescue. Makes me sick to think of what she went through to make money for vile humans.

Go to a rescue. Don't fuel this horrid trade please.

FuzzyBumbleeBee · 24/08/2025 08:25

I know a few breeders some are family some friends some that I am still in contact with who bred my own dogs
All different breeds, mostly show dogs with some working.

None of them have ever sold off ex breeding bitches all of them have been kept in the same home bar one ex breeding male who went to the breeders son.

They are getting rid of this poor girl so they aren't wasting money feeding an animal that isn't bringing in any more money and hoping to make a few last £ on her by selling her.

While what they are doing is awful it's not the poor dogs fault but buying her perpetuates the cycle
Unfortunately if someone dosent buy her she will likley end up in a rescue.

SpanielsGalore · 24/08/2025 08:31

Jesus Christ! They have 15 adverts on the go. Multiple different breeds and crosses. Churning out puppies like no one's business. It's a puppy farm. Run a mile.
Can't believe they have the nerve to ask for £800 for a dog they basically want rid of.

The principle of moving on an ex breeding bitch from a kc registered owner is fine with me. Some don’t have the space to keep them all and you could get a really well trained dog.

But i think kc people look down on pets for homes and one massive red flag is looking at the precious listings on the site for this person they are all different breeds. Most breeders specialise in one, maybe two. This one feels all over the place, mainly fashionable breeds, probably where the money is. I would pass on this, I don’t feel it’s all that meets the eye.

Also registered breeder with the council is very different to KC. Not that I love KC, but another thing to be aware of.

Eeehbahgum · 24/08/2025 08:35

have sent breeder message to ask if she is now spayed ( shall I insist if not )? And is she has ever had any alone time without other dogs
? She has been in cars and pubs etc
on lead

they have said i cant see her over a period of two days at my request

i dont massively care about the money as id like care for a dog
but ues i get yr point
another breeder did offer me a dog for £100 as jusy wanted. A good home amd said that she was happy to
keep them anyway
please see ad re this dog I habe sent a link to - id really appreciate yr thought s.

Seeing how many different dogs and different breeds of dogs they have for sale and available as stud, I find it hard to believe that she was kept as part of the family.
I am predisposed against them because they are advertising a merle poodle (a colouring linked to unethical breeding and genetic defects) for stud

Eeehbahgum · 24/08/2025 08:39

Ps i am a dog sitter . I care for lots of dogs in their own home and many squeel with exitmemt when they see me and bond v quickly - but yes i guess that in part is because they are in their own home
iI really do have the best of both worlds - freedom and the company of dogs - it is just that their is nothing like the bond with your own .

Eeehbahgum · 24/08/2025 08:43

i did not notice she wasnt the breeders original dog
oh yes i recall now that she has not been health checked - and for sure i wd insist on that !

the ad s re dogs are mostly studs aren’t they ?
i did read in the small print re the breeder that ‘ unfortunately we had to get a. Liscence’ - whats that about???

LandSharksAnonymous · 24/08/2025 08:46

You sound grossly naive. The dog is 4 years old and has already been bred to the point where she can’t be bred from again.

Why the hell would you want this dog, or even to pay £800 for it? Why would you want to pay for a dog from a puppy farmer? Why would you want to pay for a dog that has had so many litters in four years of life the breed thinks she’s worthless? Why would you want to pay for a dog whose parents aren’t health tested? Why would you want to pay for a dog that is in poor health and the breeder doesn’t even want?!

It’s not about you not caring about the money, it’s about you supporting a puppy farmer.

Go to a rescue. Don’t support the puppy farming trade. Animal lovers don’t do that.

If you pay this much for this dog, all you are doing is enabling the breeder to abuse more dogs in their care.

SpanielsGalore · 24/08/2025 08:47

Going off their FB page, in August alone they have had 6 litters - cockerpoos, pomeranians, Aussie doodles, cocker spaniels, cavapoos and maltipoos.
Tell me that's not a puppy farm.

Tygertiger · 24/08/2025 08:48

It’s lovely that you want to rescue an older dog but please go through a rescue.

I don’t believe those photos (grooming pics from the look of them) are even the actual dog. Why would commercial breeders pay for a dog to have a cut like that? They’d just give her a once-over with clippers themselves.

Go through a bichon rescue if you specifically want one but don’t buy this dog. It just gives more money to puppy farmers.

tabulahrasa · 24/08/2025 08:51

They’re a puppy farm

From their Facebook page I can see at least 6 litters in the go just now - could be more, but litters from 6 different breeds or crosses posted this month.

They’re listed on companies house as a Ltd company

and the birch you’re looking at is 4 and has had at least 3 litters already as that’s the KC maximum - so she’s been bred very young and on every season since.

tedgran · 24/08/2025 08:51

When my (now retired,) DH bought his practice he got rid of all the breeder clients, he hates them! £800 for an unspayed bitch, greedy bustards.
