Buying an ex breeding dog..

Eeehbahgum · 23/08/2025 22:15

have seen an ad for a kc registered ex breeding bichon
i rang the breeder today and was told that she os really friendly , likes other dogs and people. Been in car etc , part of family not kenneled.
she is low energy.
( often bichon s can be )
I asked why the sale? (£800) and was told that they are hobby breeder and they cant keep all their dogs as they need new ones to
keep breeding and domt have room for all the older dogs.
they put it like - its her turn for her own sofa now. I know that due to
k c rules she cant have more litters.

really don't want a pup.

they assure me that she is a v easy going dog , house
trained. . i am concerned that she has lived her life with other dogs - thus wont she feel the loss of other dogs ( they say no she loves human fuss! Or have separation anxieties as she is used to never being alone ?

i am allowed to go and spend time with her , stay locally and re visit her the next day . But i cannot test of she will be anxious as outlined until she is in out home. Any ideas about this please?

I do not share the view that you shouldn't buy for ethical reasons because if good owners do not buy ex breeding pets, they end up dumped or put to sleep

If someone pays £800 for a ex bitch all they are doing is supporting a puppy farm and condemning more dogs to a life of hell.

BeMellowAquaSquid · 24/08/2025 08:54

Hobby breeder? Let’s hope they declare their hobby to the tax man.

I hope if you do get this girl that she lives the rest of her days loved, spoiled and happy. Please have her spayed if not already done so.

IchLiebeDeutscheSchaferhunde · 24/08/2025 08:56

And is she has ever had any alone time without other dogs
? She has been in cars and pubs etc
on lead

I would guess she hasn't been out of her cage.

SpanielsGalore · 24/08/2025 08:59

Who has offered you a dog for £100?

BabyCatFace · 24/08/2025 09:01

I know it's heartbreaking to think of dogs and pups being in horrible places and being desperate to give them a loving home - you read it often that people went to see puppies and were upset to see the conditions they were in so they bought a puppy to rescue them from the puppy farm but each time someone pays a back yard breeder for a dog they are contributing to the trade. Please don't do it, there are dogs in rescue that need you just as much and won't support puppy farming. Look at an overseas rescue if you don't meet the criteria for a UK one.

Eeehbahgum · 24/08/2025 09:04

Anorhtt breeder who I approached - she said she is haapy keep
hwr girls ( 4) - id originally askeed Re puppy as she seems so lovely - but on taking to her it transpired that I don’t want a puppy - i want an older dog . And i then asked her let me know re older dogs

i will probably keep an eue ourt for the bichon in rescue as i assume they fully assess them?

I have re registered with the cinemon trust as they are apparently dogs from loving homes

Thanks for help - I have adhd and I struggle to see actions and consequences at times , but I do exell in some areas of life - am a sitter with a v good reputation and i really want to love and care for a dog of my own after being a sitter

I asking for help and advice and then taking the time to digest the advice is worth far more than just making rash decisions.

IchLiebeDeutscheSchaferhunde · 24/08/2025 09:19

The advert says her parents are not health tested.

It is a puppy farm, she will tell you whatever you want to hear.

If she actually cared she would spay because there is nothing stopping you from buying her and breeding from her.

There are five litters advertised on pets for home, who knows how many they have already sold this year.

Some may be but it's very easy to tell which are not. I adopted a middle aged dog from one and paid them £150 which was a drop in the ocean of his vets bills so if they are a puppy farm they are not very good at it. There are plenty of overseas rescues that are just as ethical as UK based ones you just need to use your common.

seeing all the issues around this situation, … how did you manage to do it and have a good experience.
?
did anyof the dogs show separation anxiety as not been an onky dog and used to company?

Just never ending profits, I think £800 is expensive for an almost five year old dog but all I’m comparing it with is the likes of many tears- ex breeding dogs around £350 and you don’t know how many litters they’ve had.
It should be a maximum of two litters and then spayed.
There should be health testing.

That poor dog 😓

Candleabra · 24/08/2025 09:33

I dint know anything about dog breeding but surely this is a commercial puppy farm. I’ve just started adding up the amount of money on the adverts alone (and taking into account multiple sales from the litters they’ve advertised). The puppies are all around 2k each. No litter less than 5 pups so conservatively 10k per litter and they have at least six different types of dogs for sale at the moment. They are raking it in.

Fairyflaps · 24/08/2025 09:46

Friends of mine took on an ex breeding pug - as a rescue, not a sale.
Her problems included: not being able to stand up (let alone walk) when they first got her (I am concerned that all the photos of this dog on the breeders website show her sitting not standing). This was not permanent, but it took time and physio therapy to get her using her back legs and walking. A prolapse. Anxiety. She took a long time to settle. This was with one of them at home with her all the time. She is still nervous around strangers.

DinoLil · 24/08/2025 09:48

£800????

LandSharksAnonymous · 24/08/2025 09:49

@Glitchymn1 the worst part is, the dog is only 4 years and 7 months old. And she's already had four litters (the KC maximum you can have - which is why the breeder is getting rid of her). So she's been almost consistently pregnant or whelping for four years.

It's awful.

Eeehbahgum · 24/08/2025 10:03

I will take time to absorb yr comments thanks.
its obvious that she has been used since young for the max litters and that she has not been heath checked ( the owner said we have not done it as we know she is healthy- presumably from breeding) nor spayed. They said at£ 800 for hee lines she is cheap so I wd need to oay for my own health check buyt they are happy for me to do it and spend x2 days with her .
i see on face book that a customer also bought ex breeding dogs x2 from her .

I am very much on the edge of the dog world, but in general if a good breeder wanted to sell on a retired dog (male or female) they would have the personal network and know someone, or a solid ‘friend of a friend’ who would take on a dog. Depending on circumstances money may change hands (I bought a 17 month failed stud boy and he is a delight) but the original owner would always be there for any issues.

I would be cautious of any dog of this sort that didn’t come you by a known person.

PiggyPigalle · 24/08/2025 10:21

Eeehbahgum · 24/08/2025 08:43

i did not notice she wasnt the breeders original dog
oh yes i recall now that she has not been health checked - and for sure i wd insist on that !

the ad s re dogs are mostly studs aren’t they ?
i did read in the small print re the breeder that ‘ unfortunately we had to get a. Liscence’ - whats that about???

For a dog sitter, I assume you charge for your service, you don't know the first thing about dogs or the dog world.

Dog sitting and breeding are different things. I would not expect someone who looks after my dog to know about it. Regardless, this op is trying to do the right by asking for advice, there is no need to shame her. All it achieves is to make people reluctant to ask for help.

Eeehbahgum · 24/08/2025 10:26

PiggyPigalle
Seems a bit rude way of saying it.
I actually charge very little. Am registered and insured etc and have had dogs all my life. My last dog was 15 when I lost her three years ago and i feel things may have changed in that time (and ive been a sitter since..as i like to be with dogs.) and I am checking things out in the knowledge that I don't know - you are right- which is why I am asking for advice . ..

Op, check my post from last week. I am in a similar situation although mine comes from a breeder I have met and the dog is not advertised online. Do check the thread, it has some useful advice on it.

in your situation, from what I have learnt over the last couple of weeks, I would avoid that bitch and go through a rescue. The advantage of a proper rescue is that they vet the dog and sometimes even foster them. You have a much better picture and safety net that way.
