All aboard Podsquad, it's Pod thread number 4.

In case you were wondering:

  • What is this (surprisingly) long-running thread about? A unique lunatic rescue Podenco, known as Pod. Featuring his pals, Stanley, GentleHowl, BabyPod, GentleBounce, Fastest and Princess and many more.
  • What makes you so special that you get your own thread? See above

Seriously, if anyone is considering getting a teenage/rescued/sight-hound/Podenco/all of the above and has NO idea what they're doing, please enjoy the previous instalments from the day we brought him home, to now, six months later. Posts will oscillate wildly from euphoric to mental breakdown and back again.

Here is thread No. 3 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/thedoghouse/5248472-they-love-a-bit-of-him-podlife?page=1

Here is thread No. 2 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/thedoghouse/5197068-the-pod-cast?page=39&reply=141216881

And thread No. 1 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/thedoghouse/5177112-oh-my-giddy-god?page=1

He looks very alert and like he won't take any nonsense from troublemakers.
(unless they're his friends).

eggandonion · 01/05/2025 10:49

He looks so fit and healthy and alert. I hope his botsy is a bit better, and he enjoyed his trip to vote.

LadyGrillingSole · 01/05/2025 11:26

Hopefully he's on the mend 😍

WiddlinDiddlin · 01/05/2025 12:10

Ahhh the Political Pod!

Glad he likes his hydrolysed food, its a real pain when they don't! You could try spreading some out thin and baking (Well drying it out on a low heat) it in one of those silicone mats (Pyramid Pan, loads of little pyramid shapes designed for draining fat whilst cooking, or there might be some with tiny dots for chocolate drops etc) see if it will come out in little crispy bits so its more 'treat like'.

HangingOver · 02/05/2025 00:43

We're having a crappy night.

I took Pod out for a morning walkie post-vote in which he yanked the lead so hard I turned my ankle and it has ballooned. He scoffed all the special magic food and slept all day, and I mean ALL day, then I gave him a really long walk in the evening which was agony . So delighted was Pod to be heading to his favourite paddock, and no doubt feeling refreshed after catching up on his sleep, he got all skittish and jumpy on his lead and started biting my sleeves and while I was wrestling with him, I managed to wrench my little finger, also agony. At which point I burst into tears in the middle of the dog walking field, which must have looked pretty mad. Four people stopped me to coo over Pod and ask what breed his is and to one of them I blurted out the reply, "Thanks, do you want him?". The lady laughed, and I was mainly joking.

So-called DP was out tonight and by the time he got home Pod had eaten, settled and got back up again commencing his whiny, barky, wall-scratching routine. After a measley ten minutes DP started doing exaggerated sighing and groaning at which point I quite sharply told him to go to bed so he'll be acting all wounded in the morning. I don't know why he acts so dramatic when he doesn't actually have to do anything where Pod is concerned (apart from put up with him) and I'm the one walking the streets at midnight with a banjaxed ankle. And my slider split open halfway round because I didn't spot that Pod had chewed it secretly.

I had actually motivated my exhausted ass to clean the floors while DP was out but they're now covered in Kenneth's last mortal remains and dog hair from giving Pod reassuring scritches.

I've already broken the vets rules about him not having anything other than his new food. His disgusting ostrich bone is literally the only thing keeping him from pulling the house down.

Oh and the crowning turd on the shit heap is his lovely polling station photo missed out on being featured in the press because I had my notifications turned off so I didn't see the lady from AP's message.

Send help!

Addendum.... Pod's shouting got so disruptive I gave up and took him out again to drive to the nature reserve when he can run and shit. Trying to silently leave the house, Pod saw a cat and screamed his head off, pulling my injured finger practically out its socket in the process. I bundled him into the car,, drove off and ugly cried the whole way. After his speed noodle pooping he then refused to get back in the car, presumably due memory of recent manhandling. One more hour of pacing and squeaking back home and he's finally asleep. I'm miserable, Pod is miserable, DP is cross and my neighbours hate me.

Good grief, Hanging, you've had the crappiest of crap times last night 😢

Come on, Mr Hanging, she's really struggling - get your ass on a fancy white horse and ride to her rescue!

Seriously, someone should be helping with Pod when you're hurt 😟 Anyone nearby?

Pashazade · 02/05/2025 07:44

Oh Hanging, that sounds truly awful. I hope everyone managed to get some sleep and Mr Hanging is more sympathetic this morning. Now the odds are Pod will be a golden boy today, so fingers crossed. Hope you’re less hurty today too.

Keepingthingsinteresting · 02/05/2025 08:18

Not the best night then @HangingOver ?

Hope you can get some rest today, you’re doing so well for poorly pod. Having been the owner of a dog who was the royalist dickhead in her teenage years and is now (almost always) a treasure and delight it will be worth it!

MaxandMoritz · 02/05/2025 08:35

Goodness, I'm so sorry you've had such an awful time, Hanging. You poor thing.
Hope you get an easier day today.

You deserve a massive medal for sticking with Pod through injuries and lack of sleep and anti-social behaviour (his, not yours!).

He's a lucky boy that you love him so much.

HangingOver · 02/05/2025 09:11

I love you guys 😭

You have no idea how much this thread helps at times like this.

DP woke me up with a cup of coffee and an apology which was very welcome. I apologised for snapping too and explained why I did and he listened carefully. That's one thing me and DP are really good at; being kind to each other when one of us gets upset.

Pod is still sparko. I absolutely have to get him out several times today for short walks so he doesn't sleep all day for hours back-to-back and party all night. I think his eat/poo/sleep cycle is all messed up which is why he can't sleep. Fingers crossed (but not the hurty one).

Scampuss · 02/05/2025 09:41

Oh Hanging that does all sound a bit pants Flowers Gin

But it will pass (soon, I hope!).

LadyGrillingSole · 02/05/2025 11:04

It's good to hear you have each other's backs, Hanging, that's what you need when times are rough 😬

Ok, Mr sleepypod, cat naps not snoozing for hours 😴 Hopefully everyone will get a good night's sleep tonight and be feeling better tomorrow ( especially your poor mum! ) 💐

WiddlinDiddlin · 02/05/2025 18:32

That does indeed sound grim! This too shall pass... but probably not before you've done some creative swearing and offered him up to the first bidder!

Whatever you can do to be kind to yourself... do it, you deserve it!

Is Pod on fenbendazole and metronidazole, or just one of those. Sometimes very tough cases need both at the same time. It can help to avoid dairy products too (theres some evidence that giardia makes them lactose intolerant which then makes the explosive shitting and gut inflammation worse).

HangingOver · 02/05/2025 23:50

He's asleep!! Will it last?.

They gave him three days of Pancure. His poops are splatty it's just the nighttime discomfort. He's got a check up first thing Tuesday but I've ordered some specimen bottles and I'm going to collect three days worth of poops in case she suggests lab tests, then I can whip they out like an insane poo collector and get them sent off the same day.

Would a hot water bottle on his tummy help with his night time pain? I know that a hot water bottle or warmth can help if my tummy hurts. Obviously it would need to be warm not hot for a dog, and preferably made of Kevlar so he can’t chew it up, but maybe he could have it at the start of the night to help him get to sleep and then you could sneakily remove it? That or a wheat bag or something warm but not dangerous to him.

You’re doing an amazing job as a dog mum @HangingOver . He’s clearly a very loved dog, even though he drives you crazy sometimes. I hope that Mr Hanging takes over the walks over the weekend and you can rest up and heal up.

WiddlinDiddlin · 03/05/2025 03:59

Mmm, I think I'd be asking that they:

  • test his poo (samples of differing ages at different times/days)..
  • double whammy - treat with both the wormer and metronidazole
  • ask about anything to support his gut/reduce gut pain
  • wipe his bum after a poo (so he can't wash his arse and reinfect himself)
  • steam clean whatever you can around the house
  • wash paws when he comes in
  • wash entire dog immediately he finishes the next round of treatment (best of British to you there...)

Apologies if you're doing all that already, I do find some vets are a bit laid back about giardia, probably having not lived with a lairy adolescent dog having extreme responses to the symptoms!

MaxandMoritz · 03/05/2025 06:51

It must be so frustrating and upsetting. You must wonder how you filled your time in your pre Pod days!

I hope some of the suggestions of pps help. However may I just mention that I unthinkingly left a wheat bag within reach of tall lurcher girl when I had a sore neck. She chewed through the fabric and devoured the contents. Which then had to come out the other end, obviously. 🙄

HangingOver · 03/05/2025 09:00

I slept all night! I am a transformed woman!!!

Thanks for the tips @WiddlinDiddlin

He's also on two sachets of probiotics a day on his food and another pill for his gut inflammation.

I just figured it's good to get ahead of the testing incase the bug hasn't cleared.

Poops are back to being hard though so perhaps she's right an this is just lingering inflammation.

The whole Podsquad is assembling at 1, can't wait.

Everything x'd for Pods bum! Yes I think being ahead of the game samples/testing wise is a good idea!

HangingOver · 06/05/2025 15:58

Strong start to to the week.

Pod had his check up at the vets first thing this morning. He trotted in and charmed everyone as usual and waited semi-patiently. Then a family came in with an XL the size of a small car with a muzzle on it's face and Pod LOST HIS SHIT. He was so scared that he basically did a pre-emptive strike and was barking and squealing and lunging. The vet came out and immediately ushered the bully family into a side room. Honestly I cannot believe how much noise he made. I apologised a lot when we got in the room and said he doesn't usually do that and the vet said it was fine and lots of dogs and the staff are scared of that dog.

Pic of the noise machine for tax.

Can you blame Pod?

How is he health wise now?

HangingOver · 06/05/2025 16:10

We're getting there. Three uninterrupted nights sleep in a row! I feel transformed. He's got more medicine to lower the inflammation and continuing with the HA food for the rest of the month (I'll call it his cereal).

I hate how scared I am of bullies. Mainly for Pod because he wouldn't stand a chance, especially if he gobs off to them like that. The little children were in between the two dogs too, thank Christ pod was on a lead and hippoboi was muzzled. The man holding it was built like a brick shit house TBF so everyone was safe it was just very loud.

Normally when he's scared he puts his ears back and trots away but I suppose as he was on lead he felt he had no option but going nuclear. Poor Pod.

LadyGrillingSole · 06/05/2025 18:04

Sounds like Pod thought he had to protect his mum from the builtlikeabrickshit - hound 😧

So glad he's on the mend and you're all getting some much needed rest 😀
